In this video, I address a common issue with the golf swing: level shoulder rotation during the backswing. If shoulders turn too level, it leads to excessive backward movement and secondary tilt, causing the club to move too far inside and resulting in poor contact and control issues. To correct this, I emphasize the importance of the shoulder’s incline, ideally at about a 45-degree angle. This is achieved by moving the lead shoulder down and back, aligning the shoulders around the spine’s inclination and preventing the common error of getting stuck from the inside. I recommend practicing in front of a mirror, incorporating lateral flexion (side bend) and spine extension before adding rotation. This sequence helps maintain a centered head position and sets the shoulders on the correct incline, promoting a stable and accurate golf swing.

before we add our rotation component to it so that the shoulders are set up on this track to where now they can just trace the track back down that we created with the back swing there all right what’s going on everybody uh got a video here coming today one from some requests that I’ve got also some issues that I’ve seen in golf lessons if our shoulders turn level in the back swing what does it make us do and how do we actually go into correcting it or what are some strategies to correcting it if it is an actual issue so first things first I think it’s important to understand the cause and effect of how things work and what they’re acting reactions are based on the movements that we create example in our back swing so if we take a player who turns their shoulders to level this was something I struggled with we turn the shoulders to level in the back swing and we’re on more of an axis like this a lot of times that gets a lot of pressure moving backwards because we’re taking the center of the chest starting from rotation in the center of the spine taking the chest back the shoulders are level and then as we apply pressure to get back forward this puts us into too much of a secondary tilt and really where I would say this becomes problematic for the player is they generally I would say good players generally get stuck too far from the inside so we look at this if I’m the player level shoulders and I apply pressure forward this is going to get the arms to drop the chest is going to stay back and down now you can see this Trail arm is stuck behind my seam line so that’s going to shorten The Arc that we’re on so if we shorten the arc that we’re on something’s going to have to move into the golf ball so that I can hit it which is then most likely going to send the center of the golf club too far out to the right causing both contact issues and issues that we may have to time and create extra movement to try and get the golf ball to move back to the Target so understanding what happens because of the shoulders turning level and what a lot of times what causes the shoulders to turn to level because I think a lot of us are taught the way I was to quote unquote turn in the back swing so we’re going to go into some ways that we can move the shoulders and we can move the spine and move the body in a manner that helps keep the club more on plane and we’re going to spend some extra time especially talking about the trail shoulder I would say and its movements from the top back back down to the bottom and where we actually want to get it so if we look at the shoulders as a hole right here so from face on let’s call this zero okay so we know we want the shoulders to be turning on about a 45° incline so if we look at that incline one of the things that would help make that up is if we did some simple math with the lead shoulder so the lead shoulder needs to work down 8 in and back 8 in so down eight back eight that would form a 45° angle that would create a shoulder plane that would look more like this versus starting at zero with the shoulders and just accessing turn from the spine which makes this work level now we could also say I could still turn from the spine and force the shoulders down but I think a lot of times for majority of players not for everybody majority of players it’s kind of the sequence that we move it in that causes the imbalances and causes the loss where we get the club stuck too far from the inside so I think there’s a specific process and a specific order of what we would do with the lead shoulder and how we actually get it to work down because I think it’s more than just saying take the shoulder down I think it goes a little bit deeper than that in order for us to create the proper inclination we want with the shoulders so the down eight back eight to get on this 45° plane so that everything is working more around the inclination of the spine where we have the ability to stay on Center so when we look at what allows the shoulder firstly to work down so that we can then get the right side back high we can work on the downswing portion of it is we would say from here if I go into lateral flexion or side Bend we can see that side Bend creates shoulder down we could also go into hip tilt which would also create the shoulder down I think either or works I would say whichever one works best for you but we need to get the Shoulder working in a downward inclination I think we can design it both ways so if we said for easy for easy reference we’re going to call it side Bend here so if I go side Bend then I go extension and then I start to add rotation you can see that allows me to stay and keep the head in more of a centered position which actually gets the shoulders to work more on this incline right here okay so if we said that again and you’re at home and you’re practicing this I would do it in front of a mirror first and we would go in this order I would say side Bend extension okay so this again this is side Bend now if we looked at what extension is from down the line extension of the spine would be this so this is me extending the spine so when I combine side Bend extension and then I start to go into rotation lastly that helps me stay quite a bit more centered and that sets us up in a position to where now the trail shoulder is back and it’s higher and it’s working on more of this inclination so now with our balance piece right here this would basically be our railroad track that this right shoulder would continue to work back down on versus going from here and tipping backwards and away from it but I don’t think when we’re set up in a Balan piece like this I don’t think it makes a lot of sense for us to want to tip backwards as much as if we’re in rotation pressure forward the shoulder’s just going to actually probably want to stay back there so I think the way that we actually set this up is incredibly important from a sequential movement standpoint going side bent extension then rotation so that we have the ability to work this right shoulder back down this inclination here so again it works back and up and now this shoulder right here is going to start working back down okay it’s not going to go down and behind it’s actually going to be going back down and forward which I can then counterbalance with this movement here from the lead side okay so I think the main purpose of this right here is we need to stop or we need to take away our reasoning for getting the golf club too far from the inside which is turning level adding pressure forward and getting the arms trapped behind us to where the only Direction the club can swing is actually out so one of the ways that I like to practice this so I would do this in freezers and I would go through the actual sequence of these movements side Bend extension rotation and then setting up to hit it like this so we’ go in here go setup going to start side Bend extension now from here I’m going to add rotation I’m going to feel what it’s like to bring that back down to the ball like that so again run through that so I’m going to go side Bend extension rotation and from there I’m going to bring and feel like this right shoulder is working right back down that track that it went up on it’s going to work right back down that track that it went up on so I go up there and freeze and then I’m just going to come down and I’m going to probably hit this about 75 to 100 yards left Bend extension rotation come down and hit so we can see that ball went about 120 120 yards you can see where I’ve finished with my spine inclination right there so what I did there is I traded this 45° inclination where the lead side is down and the trail side’s high now from here I’m traing that back on the way down but we’re actually set up in a position by going side Bend extension rotation okay to actually start to give us the ability to do that on the way down now if you’re the player that’s stuck from the inside you might actually want to feel like you’re trying to pull the golf ball from there once we get into this okay because this might be might be a movement pattern yours so an easy way of doing that is to take an alignment stick throw it on target line and as a neutralizer as a neutralizer see if you can actually get the golf ball from that free position to start left film it and see where this golf club is pitching from P4 to P5 to P6 if it’s going that direction it’s going to be a lot more difficult for us to start at left and it’s probably going to mean that the shoulder inclination was a little bit more level than what we actually wanted so if I actually started a ball left here and again what I like about this it’s going to give me the feeling that this Trail side as if I was hitting a hockey shot if I was hitting a hockey puck I wouldn’t go this way if I was hitting a hitting a hockey puck my trail shoulder you can see how that would be going back down towards the golf ball before it starts to move forward and around there so even rehearsing that there would be my feel now we’re going to try and start one left so I’m going to go ball position just behind low point I’m going to go left Bend extension rotation now I’m going to feel like I can come down and I could start that golf ball left to counter the movement that I usually create if I’m the player that struggles with coming too far from the inside so it would be in here go left Bend extension rotation I’m going to come down and start at left okay so I can see that golf ball started more left there you can see the inclination that I finished in so that for me I would call that a success cuz me as well I can tell you my big issue is getting stuck too far from the inside and letting my swing Direction move way too far out to the right which gives me contact issues curvature issues start line issues ETC so I think going into the shoulders and the incline that we actually want them to be on there’s a specific order that I think helps the majority of us by going side Bend so by going side Bend extension before we add our rotation component to it so that the shoulders are set up on this track to where now they can just trace the track back down that we created with the back swing there so I hope that helps I hope that kind of brings some clarity to why and how we can actually move the shoulder incline the way that we need to so that we can set ourselves up in the downswing ways that we can practice it do it in mirror work I wouldn’t do it mock 10 at first I wouldn’t do it crazy fast if you haven’t done this before give yourself the ability to actually bring some awareness to the difference in this cuz it’s going to feel different and if it feels different that’s probably a good thing if it feels the same we’re probably doing the same thing so uh give that a go I hope this helps if you have any questions uh please leave those 1. Another brilliant description of side bend, extension and rotation, along with the recent videos you did with Eric on “How to stay down through impact & Early Extension” I’ve watched them several times and on the range today, I’ve never hit the ball as good. Thank you so much Trevor, you are amazing, there’s definitely nobody else giving such in depth tuition like you do, plus you make it easy to understand 😊 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
