Monty while we are in the NBA Playoffs
it is also NBA award time and right now
I think pretty much the only one that
Warriors fans truly care about is the
NBA clutch player of the year we are
recording this on a Thursday morning
before the results have been announced
but I think it’s pretty clear to the
both of us that the clutch Player of the
Year belongs in Northern California for
the second straight season this time in
the hands of Steph
Curry yeah I would think so when you
look at the three candidate three
finalists you know Steph uh Demar de
rozan with Bulls Shay gilgas Alexander
with the Thunder um you know they were
all solid candidates uh but I looked at
the numbers and Steph LED points Steph
LED and field goals uh Steph LED Steph
split shooting splits were you know
typical of Steph very good um I think
the the biggest one for me was I did a
points per minute clutch minutes
uh and Steph was Far and Away the best
um and and points cler kutchman in fact
d rozan uh was pretty good and so a shay
but Steph was like miles apart from
those two guys in that regard and I
think clutch minutes are important and
look beyond that and the warriors were
24 and 24 in their clutch
games
um without the games without step one
and four
oh there you go one and four so 23 and
20 with Steph one and four without him
so I just think that when you look at
what he’s able to do for this team you
know not to mention that that you know
there were select games where he was
phenomenal I mean obviously the game
when everybody remembers against the
Suns he hits the big shot
um 20 points against the Celtics in a
comeback the warriors were down 11 going
into the fourth quarter against Boston
and Steph scores 20 in the fourth in
overtime and they get the W um those I
mean to me those two cases are like
exhibit a and exhibit B uh for for his
being that guy um now you know it’s
funny I I I recalled few years ago and
Jerry West was talking about
Steph and he was talking about how great
he is and he you know I remember what
the conversation we’re just talking you
know I wasn’t you know it wasn’t like I
was report interviewing him or anything
and Jerry was talking like he you know
he tends to do and uh he talking about
you know he’s seen all these players
over the years and he never seen
anything like it you know this goty the
way the way he does it he goes and you
know you can be fooled into thinking
that maybe he’s doesn’t have that that
competitive heart but it is there you
know maybe doesn’t look like it but it’s
there um but he yeah his thing was i’
never seen anything like that and now
Here the award the award for the clutch
player of the year is named it’s the
Jerry West award so um I think yeah I I
think if you look at it from an
objective point of view um I think Steph
has to be the guy but I mean I also
thought objectively that Malik monk
should have been the Sixth Man of the
Year um but I don’t I don’t have a vote
in this in that one so um I hey we got
what we got what you got yeah look I
mean with the six man of the year and it
was really close but yeah Malik monk in
every scoring situation especially and
we saw what the kings were how they
trailed off with their bench scoring so
it was a close voting I would have
leaned towards Malik monk as well in my
eyes this shouldn’t be close when it
comes to Steph Curry I mean I I could go
through a list and you and you and you
look at all of them a list of the
numbers and Steph is he leads in
everything clutch wise everything you
know and it’s when they’re trailing it’s
the clutch times it’s the fourth quarter
you know Point per minute especially and
I think that’s where people go back to a
lot when it comes to Steph and clutch
and especially in a season like this is
that the outside gets a little
frustrated whenever this the fourth
quarter and it is Steph and you’re
seeing him most likely and should in our
eyes win clutch player of the year but
when he’s sitting on the bench in the
fourth quarter to start the fourth
quarter you can all you can just feel
and hear dub Nation just getting hotter
and hotter and harder most so frustrated
exactly right so you know I do we’re
going to enter this phase of where and
we already talked about it minutes wise
where things are going to have to change
with Steph with Draymond if Clay’s back
all of that and when you look at where
the team is now when you look at what
Steph is still able to do at an elite
level especially when it matters
most will anything ever change in that
fourth quarter do you believe as far as
his rotations how he’s used by by Steve
CER um I I get it you know most
Superstars don’t play a whole fourth
quarter unless it’s you know like
playoffs and it’s a close game and you
know you you pretty much have to do it
but you know the old step system was was
uh 126 126 you know 12 in the 1 12 in
the third six in the and then F six in
the in the second and six in the fourth
the last six both times right uh and it
worked really well the warriors were at
that time though a team of they had more
stars you know I mean you you could you
literally have steps hit for six six
minutes uh of the of the second and and
and fourth quarters and you still had
clay and and KD out there you know so uh
but you don’t have that you know more
you don’t have that now you have play
giving you some offense but I mean KD
obviously Irreplaceable so uh Steve’s
got has been a little bit more uh I
guess agile fasile with his usage of
steep you know the rotations have
changed a little bit you know sometimes
he plays most of the first quarter and
comes back mid-second I mean it’s sort
of like a different deal um I get the
need to be flexible because with this
roster you kind of have to be but um I
think you you got to have stuff out
there for you can’t put him out there
for four minutes in the fourth quarter
of a close game no and and and and there
was the one game where um Steve you know
really addressed it because everybody
was like well why didn’t you play Steph
more why didn’t you play Steph more why
didn’t you play Steph Moore
and I thought that was an example where
maybe two or three more minutes of Step
wouldn’t have hurt and might have helped
so uh it happens but yeah I think when
you look at the Warriors and their
clutch games they had so many of them um
I think in many cases Steph was kind of
like their best chance of pulling it out
uh and and so you know I get the need to
you don’t want to play Steph 36 minutes
anymore I get that but I think there are
some situations where he can go 33 34
maybe 36 you know certain select
situations not on a regular basis like
once like before but I think I think
typically you can probably you should be
able to give Steph an average of 30 32
minutes a
night and on a few occasions 33 34 35
and on a few occasions 2930 you know I
think that that flexibility should be
there and I would be surprised if it’s
not there next season because I know
Steve wants to limit the minutes a
little bit more and I understand that
it’s something that they that he should
do um but I think yeah I think Steph is
okay if he gets you know four more
minutes on a given night or three fewer
minutes you know no big deal you already
brought up two the games I want to ask
you which one stands out more to you but
as far as Steph’s clutch performances
I’m never going to forget the Boston
Celtics game from the from this season
very much so because it was very
personal to me it was the day like
pretty much 24 hours after my daughter’s
born we’re in the we’re in the hospital
and of course put the game on in the
backgr a little still trying to be
a good dad so try to be quiet so it’s
it’s literally on mute no sound nothing
and you turn and I see Steph make that
three-pointer in overtime where he
missed his first attempt at at The Rim
Chris Paul get gets the reload finds him
and he hits it and it’s just just me
like you know just like oh my like like
you know you you can still feel that
when when he makes it you know even even
if you don’t want to put it out loud
even when you all of that when you want
to still have your journalistic
integrity in that moment he he gives you
that you know and you can feel you can
put the TV on mute and you can feel it
from your toes to your nose the
excitement that this guy still brings on
a daily basis and I think that was just
one of those ones where you’re looking
at what this Celtics team is really how
much more talented they were than the
Warriors this season but the way that he
can still strike fear in the opposition
at his size at his age doing this for
this long it was just such a great
example to me of this guy is still near
the top of the mountain yeah I mean you
know I’ve seen so many of Steph’s clut
shots over the years uh and that that
one against Phoenix was huge obviously
um the suns are in their in their in
their conference and their division and
you’re trying to keep compete with those
guys when you feel like you might be a
little bit out Gunn because they got KD
uh Booker and Beal uh and Steph wasn’t
having it you know he wasn’t having it
that night so uh but of course to me I
mean the the the the ultimate was still
the double bang game in OKC oh my God
yeah I mean part of it is because I was
literally sitting
Portside you know I’m literally s and he
I remember sitting and the Warriors they
take the ball the inbound and okay it’s
going to be Steph what’s he going to do
and when he pulled up I went to I said
to myself what the hell is he
doing because he was like 35 feet away
he just pulled up I’m like and it went
in and all of us were like what the we
just see because that was
as uh let’s see what’s the word I want
to use that was that was stones that was
onions that was Hubris that was all
those things because I he literally just
pulled up before the defense had a
chance to get to him and I’m sure that’s
what he was thinking but I’m thinking
I’m thinking dude you’re not close
enough yet it went through and Mike
brain gave it the bang bang you know um
I think he was astonished too like what
the hell was that and so that’s still
the one but but there’s been so many
over the years and um I think I I saw
stat that he has he’s had 10 over the
last decade which leads the NBA um so uh
give the ball of
Steph in the clutch yeah pretty pretty
simple pretty easy it’s funny because
you brought out the double bang and last
night on I’m scrolling on Twitter not
gonna call it X ever sorry Elon but and
it had all that like basically like a
timeline a of Mike breams double bangs
of all time I think the step one an OK
SE was his first ever I I believe you
know because you said even it felt like
he was what are we witnessing right here
how do I even react to this and to watch
it again where Steph’s just crossing
half court and you can still you can see
his eyes start to kind of almost light
up his his chin start to get up like oh
I’m I’m getting ready to pull up and not
to not to make a move no no no I’m like
this is my area this is my game I’m
different than anybody else and I think
that’s one of the coolest things about
that shot is is just how ahead of the
game he was where he again barely
Crossing half
it’s not a heave to him it’s a real shot
and I think again when you see him
setting up for it eyes up chin getting
ready shoulders getting up you’re like
okay this is something that we have not
seen this is an alien from wherever that
just decided to put his two feet down in
Oklahoma City and Let It Fly because man
it’s still fun to watch that highlight
clip yeah I mean it was the defense was
shocked I think everybody in the
building was the entire building went
just there was went silent like
it was one moment you’re feeling great
and then this guy pulls up from 30 plus
and it’s over it’s like oh my goodness
so um anyway so yeah like we said uh
Steph and clutch are synonymous even
though there is a segment there’s a
segment of fans out there ah you know he
what’s he do in the clutch you know well
okay wrong you might want to you might
want to study the numbers and and look
at the facts that’s all I’m saying yes
objectively very very he doesn’t make
the winning shot every single time he
misses some but yeah he’s a pretty good
bet it sure is Dub stalk is brought to
you by Honda there’s never been a better
time to drive in the moment with Honda
buy online or hurry into your local
Honda dealer today Monty as we’re
talking about Steph we’re talking about
how clutch he is it’s pretty wild the
same time to kind of watch these
playoffs and Steph Curry at home during
these playoffs and just see The Changing
of the Guard we understand that Steph
LeBron Kevin Durant they’re still great
great great players but man it from an
outside perspective what an interesting
time because with every sport the NBA
baseball football there’s always going
to be again a Changing of the Guard a
little bit of a passing of the torch and
it feels like we’re pretty much kind of
watching that in real time with these
playoffs right now yeah man I mean you
know when you think of the last 10 years
or so 12 years whatever you want to call
it um
Steph KD Lebron they were the three guys
that you said okay these are the three
best players in the league I don’t think
there was any question there were other
good players obviously you know other
guys won MVP awards in that in that
period of time and Yannis came in a
little bit you know a little bit later
but but um it’s pretty clear if you say
give me the the the all the the give me
the best players in the NBA of the last
15 years uh I think Steph LeBron and KD
would be unanimous
selections um
now you look at them now and you know
they’re all mid-30s and well LeBron I
mean LeBron is 39 so that’s incredible
but when you look over the past few
years I mean that step’s mvp finals
finals MVP in 2022 might have been their
last harah you know um since then you
know
LeBron and KD and Steph they’ve
struggled to get out of you know to make
any noise in the playoffs I mean the
Lakers went pretty far last year they
got to the west Western Conference
Finals so but they they were none of
those teams have been you know whether
was Steph’s teams or KD’s teams those
teams have been mostly you know like the
Warriors last two years what were they
six seed 10
seed Lakers last year seven seed this
year seven seed uh KD with Brooklyn I
mean that things fell apart there there
was that was bad uh and then in in in
Phoenix they slipped into the six seed
so you’re looking at the three standard
bearers kind of either not getting in
the playoffs at all in case and Steph
are barely slipping in there with KD and
and uh and and Braun on the other hand
you’re looking at guys like an
Edwards Shay Gil
Alexander Luca I these are 25 and under
guys and it’s like holy
moly um they they’re they’re they’re
showing that they’re they’re ready I
mean I things can happen fast in this Le
and again I’m not saying that Steph uh
Steph uh KD and and and Bron are done
not saying that but what I’m saying is
that you can see that their time is
coming to a close and you can see that
the torch that they’ve been carrying for
all these years other guys are like it’s
my turn and let’s just put this way
who’s more likely to win the NBA
Finals a team with LeBron a team with
Kevin or a team with Shay a team with
ant even Jason Tatum who you know I
don’t I don’t I’m not convinced he he
has what they have uh I mean I love
Tatum great player uh top five in the
MVP voting but um there’s something
missing there and I mean I think he
needs to win a championship pretty soon
because if he doesn’t get it now those
other guys gonna be on his butt you know
whether it’s Luca and and Shay so um but
those guys those four guys
there’s your league right there man um
and and then we haven’t even gotten to
wimy and Chad you know other guys coming
in you know so it’s we’re seeing it in
real time right now watching these
playoffs is like man man man these Young
Bucks are coming and they’re coming hard
that’s the craziest thing about looking
at the playoffs right now is yeah
there’s so many great like amazing young
talent and these are teams that have
multiple guys that are in their Prime
multiple Stars obviously especially in
the western conference as we talk about
more but also at the same time let’s
talk about two teams that aren’t in the
playoffs the San Antonio Spurs if this
is the worst that we’re ever going to
see from Victor wi minyama oh watch out
like you’re not going to see them at the
bottom of the barrel much longer they’re
gon to start they’re gonna have to start
being being ready to compete really soon
the way he’s playing he he became again
I mean he’s a guy that should be up for
near defensive player of the year he’s a
guy that will be competing for that
every single year who’s going to be
competing for MVPs in the I think in the
very near future the Memphis Grizzlies
no John Morant this year they obviously
took a huge huge huge step back they’re
not going to be you know looking at the
bottom of the the Western Conference for
years to come by any means and that’s
the reality that whether it’s the Lakers
and LeBron whether it’s Stephen the
Warriors or even whether it’s KD and the
Suns right now look if if the if the
Suns lose in the first round that is a
colossal failure
of roster construction if you go out and
you have a big three of KD Devin Booker
and Bradley Beal and you put all your
chips on the table you loseing the first
round again that I I know that there
were circumstances with injuries and so
on and so forth but that’d be a failure
and so I think that a handful of teams
have to kind of look at the league right
now and go where do we fit because just
looking at next year there might be 14
Conference teams that look at themselves
and go yeah we have a real chance of as
long as we get in the playoffs who knows
who knows what could happen just talent
wise yeah I mean Mike Dunley be sort of
hinted at that the other day during his
uh season ending pressure when he talked
about the West I don’t think the West is
gonna get any weaker it’s got to get
stronger because yeah you you mentioned
you know you got the Spurs gonna get
better the the the uh the the the Spurs
get better the Rockets will get better
and they were right on the Warriors
heels for a while there you look at
those and Memphis if they’re healthy
they’ll get better so those are three
more teams right there you can throw in
the mix and say those teams won’t be
losing 50 games next year you know so uh
it’s going to be tougher and and the
Warriors I mean the Warriors are
obviously well aware of that and there
is a need from them to try and get a
younger player a younger impact player
uh a wing that can come in and and sort
of make be a transition guy now you know
I I think I think lob understands that I
think he’s willing to spend what he can
I think uh dun leby obviously gets it
and wants to do it and we’ve heard Steph
say he wants to keep the Draymond Steph
play wh together but the last thing
Steph said was I just want to
win so uh that’s that’s the priority
winning so I just think that we’re
seeing this in real time and it happens
to every group I mean we saw it happen
to Kobe in late his career we saw happen
to Kevin Garnett you know Tim Duncan all
those guys they aged out and when they
aged out the LeBron’s the steps The KES
were there to pull to grab the the torch
and you saw that and they’ve had it for
a long time and and now yeah they’re
still I mean to me they’re still the
guys I mean if the Warriors are in the
playoffs watch how their TV ratings look
compared to some of the other teams yeah
good point good point yeah and and so
they’re still they still have that magic
about them uh people want to see them
but yeah yeah I mean there if if you’re
Steph or you’re Braun or your KD you
know you’re looking at the sun on your
career and it’s you see it starting to
go down like this and you’re looking at
those young guys and going whoa you know
and and especially guy like and Edwards
man because Timber was are tough man
that’s a tough and he ain’t scared of
anything I mean and you know the whole
the back and forth between ant and KD in
that game the other day in game one when
aunt was cooking him you know and and KD
is his favorite play player you know of
all time and and he was just giving him
some good natur smack talk and and so um
and Katie gets it he gets it he knows
that ant the future and he’s the present
and trying to keep his present as long
as possible you know so uh we’re
watching something happen man these
playoffs are telling us something yeah I
think when we talk about the future of
the Warriors the head of the snake for
kind of that young guard right now
roster wise would be Jonathan kaminga
that’s who they they see talent wise who
can really obviously kind of take that
next leap had a big year three obviously
but we can’t ignore the rookies by any
means the only other two things we’re we
can really look at Warriors wise when it
comes to award season isn’t rookie of
the year but it would be the all rookie
team and with two guys in Brandon Pinsky
and Trace Jackson Davis two really
really great surprises from the NBA
draft for the Warriors with psky being
number 19 overall with Trace Jackson
Davis being number 57 overall I think
it’s safe to say that mikee dun leevy Jr
really hit on those picks in his first
draft I talked with Brandon a little bit
about why he believes he should be first
team all rookie I personally don’t have
a vote when it comes to all rookie if I
did I do believe that he should be a
first team all rookie and his reasoning
to me made a lot of sense because it was
a lot about the usages uh the way he
impacted games you know if you look at
his points rebounds assists they’re all
top five I think points might have been
10th among rookies but they’re there but
it’s the things like leading the league
in Char as drawn it’s a things like
leading the Warriors in a season long
plus minus second with rookies behind
only Chad holgren you know there was
only one rookie wom Yama who had more
games of at least 10 points five
rebounds five assists so I think it’s
all the little things that he’s going
hey I show the impact I can make you
know I want to see the love now when it
comes to all rookie what do you say as
far as when it comes to pods and tjd
with these all rookie teams yeah I mean
I think if you look at the top 10
rookies in the league they’re in there
yes they’re in there so uh and I think
the rors recognize that too um uh Trace
got a late start because he didn’t get
much action in the first six eight weeks
but over the last half of the Season he
saw a lot of action and and he was he
made some impressive plays
uh did some impressive things I think
people recognize that yeah you know he’s
not Chad he’s not Victor but as the bigs
go he’s the next tier he’s the next tier
and if you’re the Warriors you got to be
happy with what you did given that he
was taken so late in the draft he barely
made it into the draft you know barely
so he barely was draft he was almost a
free agent so um but yeah I think with
psky um
I think I I want to say he’s a lock for
first
team I I would think he would be I think
I do think he would be but um based just
based on what I’ve been seeing in
people’s comments and stuff sounds like
they they understand his value and what
he does um Trace might be second team
simply because you got Chad and Victor
there yeah yeah and and and so uh but
yeah to me both those two guys when you
look at those those two guys you look at
Chad you look at Victor you know Brandon
Miller you know there were a few other
rookies that you say okay you know
people going to look at and give them
some love but to me um the warriors were
the team that had two rookies that did
some good stuff
and yeah missing the Playoffs is going
to hurt them you know but the votes are
already in so um so yeah I gota think
they both be um both get some uh all
rookie team love yeah when I asked
Brandon who his all first team all
rookie team would be he said that it
would be Chad wimy himself Brandon
Miller and haime hawz Jr and that that
that makes the most sense to me for for
the first the first team yeah and I mean
then you look at with second team TJ D
being alongside probably someone like
Derek Lively from the Mavs I think the
two guys that could maybe push Brandon
for that guard spot would be Cas Wallace
and keonte George but to me I think
Brandon impacted the Warriors and did
all the little things in a bigger way
for First Team all rookie and again when
we talk about the Warriors future this
would be the first time if this happens
in 43 years that they had two guys on
the all rookie team since
1981 let me remind you that second Team
all rookie didn’t come into play until
1988 89 I believe so but again that has
to be a pretty good pat on the back when
it comes to Mike dun leevy Jr a pretty
big vote of confidence from lob Steve
Kerr and the rest of the decision makers
to see these two guys where they were
drafted and the way they were able to
impact not just oh let’s look down the
line the future but the immediate future
and present as well yeah no I
I you know I remember the 2012 draft
which was really good too Harrison
Barnes uh fesa Cil and then Draymond
Green pretty good pretty good yeah yeah
and and I I remember they were all three
of those guys were on the court in the
postseason together and I remember
thinking have you ever seen three
rookies on the court in a playoff game
all three of them one team so that was
really good obviously fesus his knees
didn’t hold up um and they knew when
they drafted him that that could be an
issue um so but Harrison was the
starting was a starting three you know
and Draymond was coming off the bench at
that time and so um but now you look
back you go that was a pretty good draft
Harrison’s still in the league um FES
has been
out because of his knees and uh and
Draymond obviously is headed is is
worthy of the Hall of Fame so um but
this draft you know I don’t know what
where these guys are going to go trace
and and tjd I don’t know where they’re
gonna trace and and Brandon I don’t know
where they’re goingon to go but as
rookies they showed really well and give
the Warriors reason to be uh encouraged
about what’s to come they should be
because those guys you know they can
play now how far how high they can fly
we’ll find out but we know they can play
dub is presented by door Dash the
official partner of the Golden State
Warriors Monty I saw a pretty
interesting tweet from you that had to
do with uh the Warriors individual
players on defense and I know you I know
that you have a little bit more to talk
about that so take me with that let me
ask you this okay here what I want to
do you know I looked at the 12
rotational
players and
I’m gonna let you guess I’m give you a
name and you tell me where you think
they rank among those 12 players okay
okay okay okay uh let’s start off with
uh cavon
Looney Looney out of 12 12 Warrior let
me let me
go fourth nope oh lower yes o uh seventh
very close Okay okay wow
eighth Chris
Paul ninth
no oh oh hi okay again Chris Paul this
is someone who I mean long list of of
all defensive teams but we know where
where he is in his career aging wise but
man he’s still such a smart player so
maybe I’m gonna go third actually I mean
it seems like he might be near the top
of the list is it
third fourth he was four W 38y old
backup point guard fourth for your
defens of rating let’s flip the game
though now I’m gonna give you in order
where these guys finished okay number
one on the Warriors Gary Peyton II now
you tell me give me your thoughts here
on a one to 10
scale should they be on the roster next
season do they need how how much they
needing on the roster next season is
wait wait is is one low 10 is guaranteed
10 is like they got to have them one has
got you don’t need him when it comes to
Gary because of what he still does for
the Warriors in such a special way I’m
gonna give it a six and a half and I
would usually go even higher the injury
concerns have to be a real a real
concern a real issue and obviously he’s
someone you look at Contract wise what
are they going to do I and he even
mentioned that that obviously he wants
to be here and he would even probably
redo his contract for less money to be
here longer so I’m gonna go like six and
a half because I think he still brings
so much to the Warriors I’d want to go
even higher but the injury concerns the
injury risk has to be taken into play
there yeah I get that I get that I’m
gonna give him I’m gonna say eight uh
okay yeah right and the reason why I say
that is because you know if you ask Mike
Dunley be Steve cerr Ron Adams um Ken
Ken Kenny ainson you know what what’s
the thing what do you got what do you
have to fix with your defense and
they’re all gonna say within the first
few sentences point of attack
defense um and and Gary is is really
good at that he’s the best on the team
with that number one defensive rated
player on the team uh and that’s what he
specializes in um so I’m G to give it an
eight but you’re right the injury
factors the injury factor is you know
it’s makes it a little skittish um you
if he’s healthy for 75 games oh my
goodness you know yeah of course but but
will we see that you know I mean he is
so his body is so tightly wound his
muscle his muscles are so um so rigid at
times that it’s hard for him to to stay
healthy without getting pulls here and
and strains there you know muscle
strains and aches and stuff so uh but
yeah I’m gonna give him I’m G to give
him uh I’m going to say eight number two
on the worst defensive in terms of
Defense
Moses
movie I’m gonna go eight I I think Moses
needs to be back I think he needs I need
think he needs a bigger leash I think he
needs a bigger opportunity you’ve
written about you know the priority of
making clay obviously bringing him back
a priority but that Moses Moody can’t be
thrown to the side if Clay is at
priority I think he has earned it I
think I don’t want to hear just talk
talk talk about how mature Moses Moody
is how he’s already ready it’s like well
let’s see it then like give him the
leeway and if he makes a couple mistakes
he makes a couple mistakes so I I think
eight because I think that like the time
has to be now in year four for Moses
Moody and he does deserve that yeah I
mean he’s a number two defensive player
on the team last year and his point of
attack defense was much better than some
of the other guys so I look at that and
I also look at Moses didn’t say and
Steve Kerr you know he you know he
always mentions W wanting him to get his
shot off quicker
and I get it but Steve is also looking
at playay
Thompson and I’m sorry but how many guys
get their shots off as quick as clay
does you know there’s clay there’s Steph
and there’s kind of everybody else you
know um most of the guys in this league
need a little bit of time you know and I
think Moses is like that Andre Iguodala
was like that you know I mean you didn’t
look for him to be making a bunch of
Threes but when he got his threes up he
needed a little bit of time to get it
going you know and so I I think that is
a little bit overhyped I think Moses
decision-making okay that needs to be a
little better I get that you know so uh
yeah I’m I’m GNA say an aid for Moses
third number three on the defensive
rating list Draymond Green what you
got deep breath because it’s always
complicated when it comes to Draymond
Green uh I think I’m gonna go I’m gonna
go nine because I still think that he is
still such keys to the keys to the
ignition when it comes to the Warriors
and really I I wrote about the the
Warriors offseason to-do list and it was
five things the five biggest things that
they must answer this offseason and one
of the ones that wasn’t part of it and I
explained it in my introduction is that
pretty much the biggest question mark
still though is how much you can trust
Draymond Green because it is two years
in a row where at some point and not
just with his mouth or anything else
like that more on the violence side he
derailed the season for at least for for
at least a little bit and you can’t
really deny that anymore but Steve Kerr
had a long long answer about still how
much he loves Draymond and that that
love from both sides is very real and I
don’t see Draymond going anywhere right
now I did think it was interesting his
last answer at the end of the season in
Sacramento he mentioned twice about
about whether I’m back and and made it
clear that he wants to be back so I
still have to go with nine when it comes
to Draymond Green because I think
they’ve made the indication that they
are going to for better terms live or
die with Draymond Green and that and I
don’t see him leaving by by any means
right now yeah I mean I I’m in the same
ballpark I’m G say say 92 um I mean you
know even before Draymond got into the
crazy nonsense um there was always a
a there was always the the debate
whether you know should the Warriors
trade Draymond because of the other
stuff the the technical files and the
and and my my comment was
always if they trade Draymond then their
first order of business is to find
someone who give them what Draymond
gives them and those guys do not grow on
trees so um that’s why I say his value
they put up with a bunch of stuff with
Draymond
and that’s why I mean you look around
the NBA look around the NFL look around
Major League Baseball there’s always
been some guys you look like man this
guy’s had a million chances it’s because
his talent his his impact analyzes
people you know and so Josh Gordon the
receiver in the NFL I mean that guy I
mean he’s been suspended like you know
140 times he’s bounced back all these
times people kept giving him a try
because when he’s on the field he’s so
good uh and that’s Draymond
now I’m going to think that this is the
next season that Draymond doesn’t do
what he did these last two seasons and
so yeah I think he will be back I think
they want him back I know Steph wants
him back I don’t know he drives steps
crazy at times he drives everybody crazy
at times Steve Mike Joe but they don’t
want to look at them their team without
Draymond because to them that would be
our defense is going to
hell and and with without Draymond
that’s kind of what it did last season
so I’m gonna say nine um Chris
Paul one and it’s nothing against Chris
Paul uh I think that he did a lot of
good he checked a lot of boxes that the
Warriors wanted as far as assisted
turnover ratio being being a smarter
team I think he ended up being a much
better Locker in presence than we even
imagined uh got along with guys like a
Draymond Green built that relationship
which is the one that we were the most
worried about probably and even young
guys as well too a lot of good that that
Chris Paul did but when it comes to his
contract and when it comes to the next
phase of this team I don’t see a
scenario where where Chris Paul should
be in a Warriors jersey again for a
second straight season yeah I’m with you
on that I don’t think they I mean as
much as Steve and Mike both talked about
you know the idea of having him back and
stuff I don’t really see that working
out uh they brought Chris Paul in here
so he can be there for them in the
postseason and then they make the post
season they didn’t make the playoffs so
um $30 million they tried it didn’t work
um and I think Chris will want to go
somewhere where he has a better chance
to win uh a championship and right now
that’s not the Warriors you know no
matter how they reload if they reload
this
offseason that means Chris Paul’s not
gonna be part of the pcture because they
can’t reload with him on the roster you
know so they have to you know I don’t
see Chris saying okay give me the vet
minimum you know I I don’t see that so
um so yeah I think that’s one that the
Warriors will have to move on from fifth
rated defensive player on this team was
Brandon baj jimsky we know he will be
back right right where where where I go
I think it has to be you know a nine a
10 because I because I don’t see a world
where he’s not back um you know he’s not
in that Steph Curry he has to be back
like you know he’s not in that realm in
that world so in unless he is a big part
of a trade package that brings you back
an immediate Allstar someone who gives
you a real real real chance I going for
that fifth title I I think Brandon pimi
has to be back he has to be part of of
the immediate and he has to be part of
the future what his role is is going to
be really interesting I think going
forward uh we know that he was the first
person in the starting lineup when Klay
Thompson went to the bench probably is
more of that really good six seventh man
right now in year two kind of that combo
guard but again I think think Brandon
psky is a warrior for here and for the
future the number six defensive player
uh on the Warriors team last year was
Jonathan kaminga this is where we get
interesting because I do think that that
like that in my eyes I’m gonna give this
an eight and a half and and this is why
I say eight and a half because because I
do want to say more like nine and a half
10 maybe even 10 and a half get get off
the scale because I think I think he’s
that important and that pertinent to the
Warriors now he is also their greatest
trade asset their greatest trade ship so
I don’t see I don’t see him being on a
different team this off season but he’s
also someone that you can’t if a if you
call a team about player X and they go
okay well you have Jonathan kaminga you
can’t just hang up the phone right now
because again when you have step you
have Draymond theoretically have Clay
your window is short and you need that
next star that very well could be
Jonathan kaminga so I think that he is
going to be a warrior I think he
probably has to be a warrior but I also
think that you can’t ignore that the
trade asset part of Jonathan kaminga
yeah I I think I think JK in terms of
will he be back I’m gonna say that’s an
eight or nine area right there will he
be back should he be back I’m gonna say
that’s a seven six7 area because okay
like you said like you said he’s their
best trade chip
and if at the deadline last season they
could have packaged kaminga and whoever
else and whoever else and draft future
draft picks to the Raptors for Pas for
Pascal sakam I would have done it I
would have done it Pastor seak is ready
right now to be a star he is a star yep
and we’re watching him cook in the
postseason right now um and imagine what
he would have done for this Warriors
team I mean both of the Raptors forwards
that were traded both pass Cal and uh
ogan anobi those are both really good
players really good players they’re
veteran players they’re not old vets
they’re still in their 20s you know and
um and I think those two guys would
would so yeah if you could get someone
of that caliber there aren’t that many
those guys floating around but you got
to consider trading JK if you would if
you can get that in return because then
your timeline is like more along with
Steph Kay Draymond which they seem
committed to so um Joe would hate to
trade Jak K because that would mean wow
you know all those lottery picks you
know we had lottery picks and we didn’t
wiseman’s gone and now JK the they there
was a time when the Warriors thought
wisman JK and Moody that’s our next
three our next next core right there and
one’s
gone Joe does not want to get rid of the
other guy he loves JK and I can see why
but there are scenarios in which J could
be JK could be moved and if it’s the
right guy I could see them doing it and
I would understand so yes um number
seven on the defensive all def defensive
rating for The Warriors the rookie Trace
Jackson
Davis I’m gonna go with kind of again
the same ballpark as Randa P jimsky I’m
gonna go anywhere from8 to 10 because I
don’t see a scenario where he’s not back
I still think that his role in the
immediate future as far as next season
right now we’re talking and he would be
their starting center and I don’t think
that that’s a negative by any means I
also still think that whether it is the
trade market most likely more than the
free agent Market but if you could
whether it’s a JK we’ll talk about other
players later if you could package
someone for again a in their Prime big
man that you can’t ignore that and I’m
not saying that Trace will be part of
that package but then maybe he’s more of
a really really really good bench player
too right now so the role is going to be
interesting but again I I think he’s
someone who yeah is part of the the
future and the now for the Warriors yeah
I I think they love him but I think
they’d be willing to trade him uh in the
right in the right deal and I say that
because Trace is already given you uh
some pretty good interior defense you
know he’s pretty good there pretty good
rim
protector but offensively he’s still
kind of limited
uh and I say that because he doesn’t
have a go-to shot you know um he can lo
he can catch lobs but there are a lot of
guys who can catch lobs um Clint capella
has been catching lobs for years but
Clint capella and he’s made good money
off that but Clint capella what’s his
what’s his go-to shot you know we don’t
yeah and so nothing wrong nothing
against that but I think Trace can still
develop a go-to shot he’s a much better
passer than capella is just use as a
comp comparison Trace can get you four
or five dimes in a game I mean he’s he’s
that good um his defense is good but I
think for him to reach the highest
possible level he needs to develop some
sort of offensive moves a move that
gives him buckets besides the dunk um
whether it be a mid-range or whether it
be you know a little turnaround some
something that gives him uh a chance to
score I know there’s been some chatter
about maybe him getting out to the
three-point
line I mean that would be a bonus I
think with him but if he could just make
a shot that that other than lobs and
dunks I would I would that to me is is
what you’d love to see from him and if
you see that then I think then at that
point he becomes almost Untouchable so
I’m gonna say
Trace eight eight and a half we already
said Lon was number eight on the
defensive roster here
um let me go first here yeah
yeah lon’s meant so much to this team
and he’s still probably one he probably
Steve’s best play favorite
player when you look at his path to get
here what his body has been through for
him to be in the NBA on a regular basis
but he still has to go through it every
single day just to get on the court man
you can’t help but respect that dude you
can’t help but respect it and last two
times he went on the open market there
was very little interest because they
all know the injury history and they’re
a little skittish about it and look at
they look at Luna and say you know he
means more to the Warriors than he than
he would for us and this time around I
just I think his time might be done um
where the Warriors are trying to go now
they need his out they need his money
you know and and so I yeah I’d say the
chance of him being back being back next
season I think the chance of Looney
being back next season or like I’m going
to give it a three right
now I was going to say two or three to
be honest with you because of the
especially because of the money it’s
really hard transitioning from Trace to
cavon like we just did with the
defensive ratings because I mean think
about a year ago we we’re talking about
build the cavon Looney statue and he was
and he’s done so much for this team but
it’s just that’s just how quick things
can change in the NBA he acknowledged it
at the end of the season and he know and
he says he wants to be back but he also
understands the reality of the situation
and and yeah I think that that this
might be the end of the road for cabon
Looney um there there is there is a a
scenario where maybe you wave him and
you bring him back on a different kind
of deal because you both because you see
the good and still having cavon Looney
here he still sees the way he can impact
and that maybe yeah his his best chance
is still with the Warriors as a backup
but yeah right now it’s it’s probably a
two or three tardo much further than
that when you just see kind of the
riding in the wall right now for cavon
Looney who who no matter what will
always be a fan favorite will always be
a favorite in the locker room and a
worthy favorite of Steve Kerr as well
yeah loone means so much to this team
and so I I just I just don’t know I
don’t I just don’t think it’ll happen I
mean I hope it does but there’s a
there’s there’s a way it could for sure
but I don’t I don’t I don’t really see
it right now so the next guy ninth in
ninth place on the Warriors defend
rating roster uh is Steph Curry
10 give me a second here I’m G give it
an
11 I mean you might as well just go okay
next yeah really I mean we can move on
from Steph right now because that was
okay I I don’t need to read any columns
about like oh maybe they should trade
Steph Curry and no no no no no no no no
no no no like literally like your
percentage points on hitting on a
rebuild compared to trying to do these
next two three years with a Steph Curry
they don’t even compare so we don’t even
need to go down that road it’s an 11
it’s an Infinity whatever it’s Steph
Curry yeah number 11 Dario
sarich yeah man Dario um number 10 Dario
sarich yeah yeah yeah yeah
yeah I think with
Dario it’s it’s a zero it’s a one it’s a
two it’s it’s something like that it’s
nothing against Dario um you know I I I
think that he started off the season
really kind of doing exactly what they
need him to do hitting shots uh he
showed his grit he showed his his uh his
professionalism still where he can kind
of even has that point guard in him deep
down the way he can see the floor but
he’s really really really close to a
zero when it comes to defense and
unfortunately for for Dario I think that
dei’s death had a big big big impact on
him um he was a different player post
All-Star break post dey’s death um so
it’s even hard to even bring that up to
to go down that road when it comes to
Dario um so I think it’s unfortunate um
but I don’t see him back in the Warriors
jersey uh this next season and yeah it’s
probably a one or a two when it comes to
Dario yeah I I’m in the same ballp I I
don’t know if he wants to come back you
know um you know he as the season went
on down the stretch he struck me as
someone who says you know who might be
thinking just stay in Europe next year
you know I don’t know if he wants to do
this again um he can still play but um I
yeah I would not be surprised if he says
you know what I’m gonna stay over in
Europe and spend another year over here
uh kind of do like like Bita did when
after his season you know um and so I
wouldn’t be surprised if he does that
this was a tough year for him in a lot
of ways uh he wanted to play more and he
did play he played he was in a rotation
early fell out and never came never
really came back at the end there so
number 11 on the defensive rating list
is number 11 Klay
Thompson now oh my God this is a tough
one
um
man I’m gonna I’m gonna go write my
number down yeah yeah I’m I’m gonna go
I’m gonna go seven right now and it’s
something that I feel like can change on
a daily basis anywhere from five to
seven and a half really it can change
all the time
because right now I still believe he’s
back um but if you ask me a month ago I
say it’s a two months ago yeah of course
then you asked me a month ago then we’re
going yeah most likely now you’re asking
me today and you’re going I think so
with kind of this weird high voice that
I just did you know so and that’s where
right now I I’m going to be at a seven
because I think in his six man role he
can still provide you so much and it
really and a lot of it is going to be on
the shoulders of Steve Kerr if he is
back because you got to be able to to
feel the Integrity of the game when it
comes to Klay Thompson going forward now
if he’s on a heater let him roll if he’s
0 for six hey you’re gonna sit down it
doesn’t mean that that that’s the end of
the night for you but it might if
someone if if oses is getting hot if
Brandon’s playing great things like that
so I think a lot of it is if Klay
Thompson’s back does rest on Steve K
shoulders today when recording this I’m
gonna give you a seven you ask me
tomorrow you ask me two weeks from now
it very well might
change can you see that six six
yes a six and I I say six because
um Clay’s at the point of his career now
where you have to hide him on defense at
least I shouldn’t say hide him because
he can defend pretty well against some
of the bigger guys he can hold his own
against some of the some of the fours in
this league but the true wings and the
guards he can’t do like he used to do he
used to be a good point of attack
Defender he can’t he’s not that guy
anymore but as a six-man you don’t say
clay we need to go out there and and and
and lock somebody down you say go out
Klay go out there and get us some
buckets he could do that he can do that
and so if Clay is is back as a six-man
I mean that’s to me that’s ideal for him
at this stage of his career um so uh if
if he wants to come back as a six man I
think the Warriors should do whatever it
takes to get him back within reason uh
and I think they would um but if he’s
held bent on
starting that’s a tough call uh because
you do you really want to start somebody
that teams are willing to Target even
though Steph Curry has been targeted for
years because of clay you know because
of clay and now you want to you want to
Target Clay even with Steph on the floor
that’s not a good look so six man clay
yeah nine starter clay five so six is
kind of somewhere in between yeah yeah
last but not least number 12 the last
guy on the Warriors
rotation his defensive rating was
116.3 Andrew
Wiggins four um and right there because
of that because of the def because of
the defensive rating first and foremost
because Andrew Wiggins cannot be the
bottom of the list for for defensive
rating he needs to be top four on your
team top three on your team for you to
have a real chance I think that whatever
Andrew wiggins’s future is with the
Warriors they will always be able to
thank him for like for that Championship
run for what he did in the playoffs in
2022 for him being the second best
player on the the team in the NBA Finals
that’s always going to be noteworthy
that’s always going to be appreciated
from the front office to Steve Kerr
teammates and fans always has to be but
I think you’re looking at what Andrew
Wiggins is now what he showed you this
season and what he showed you the season
before is not an Allstar it’s not
someone that and it’s really not someone
that you can trust game in and game out
and that has to be very worrisome I’m
I’m just going to go back to one one
instance this season that kind of had
social media Blaze where him and Brandon
psky kind of got into it a little bit on
the court for a second and it’s because
if Andrew Wiggins is just going 100%
like BP does almost to a fault at times
and just catches goes dunks in
transition but instead he kind of
gallops he gets fouled he’s not the
greatest free throw shooter ever and
Brandon kind of clapped it I’m like hey
let’s go and Wiggins what’ you just say
to me kind of thing and it was a lot of
people were going hey a rookie can’t do
that and I’m from the outside going no
no no this is the issue Steph Curry all
rookie and Brandon Pinsky all these
people will still have to say we need to
flip the switch for Andrew Wiggins still
that can’t be happening so yeah I think
they’re they’re in a
very tough situation when it comes to
Andrew Wiggins right now because his
value is low on the trade market his
contract isn’t terrible when it comes to
a trade ship either so it’s kind of a
situation of can it help you maybe get a
draft pick can it help you offload some
money is he part of a package that can
get you a a key contributor or BigTime
name right now that’s the questions and
if and if he’s not and he’s on this team
then where is he in the pecking order
because right now I think it’s pretty
low and I can’t put them higher than a
four right now yeah you know the
Warriors have in their favor that when
they acquired
wigs the talk about the league was H
this guy is NH you know what’s he really
gonna give you you don’t know what
you’re gonna GNA give a night he’s
inconsistent you know he’s soft he’s
this he’s that and and then couple years
later the Warriors won a championship
with him being basically a star in the
postseason great yeah so so the wor got
what they could out of Wiggins they got
the best of him but you don’t see that
guy enough you don’t see that guy enough
and that is why to me will he be back
I’m going to give that
a two woo two uh should he be back I’m
give that a
three and I say that because if they’re
committed to the step play Draymond core
and they bring Wiggins back it feels an
awful lot like running it
back and I think they’re pretty much
committed to not running it back totally
and so so um yeah I just think wigs
chance of being a warrior next season
are pretty low pretty low pretty low and
I think they should be given what he’s
done for them over the years he he
helped them win another championship
that they would not have gotten without
him and but yeah if you have a guy on
your team that is that important to what
you do and to your success but you have
to constantly gas him
up maybe maybe that ain’t good for the
long run even though he’s his age is
right you know just turned 29 but yeah
he he ain’t that guy right now so uh he
can’t do for the war well he’s not doing
what the for the Warriors what say
Pascal seak is doing for the Pacers you
know so that there there’s there’s your
game right there so that’s all I got
with the defensive rating guys but I’m
telling you man Mike D even made it
clear that they gotta be better on
defense they sure do and and the wor the
great wor teams of a few years ago that
was their that was their Baseline that
was their Foundation yeah oh they shot
lot three-pointers you know Barkley oh
the those pretty low three-point
shooting teams they played some nasty
defense man and because Klay was really
good Andre was really good KD was really
good draymond’s really good and you
could hide
Steph Steph didn’t have to be a great
defender because he surrounded by
monsters those death lineups were they
were built on
defense they were built on defense and
so when you got Andre KD clay and
Draymond out there Steph doesn’t need to
be you just got to be shooting because
those four guys are covering a lot of
floor space you know with their arms and
I mean yeah so yeah I think defense is a
priority and I think Wiggins defense for
him to be one of their primary on ball
Defenders and for him to be the LA the
worst defens defender on the
team that’s that’s that’s not that’s
incompatible you know you can’t live
with that so I get that I just don’t
think he’ll be back next season I’m GNA
leave you with this then mon because we
are recording this the morning also of
the NFL draft which GM Warriors GM Mike
Dy Jr or 49ers GM John Lynch maybe I
should have called Matt mayoko and
Jennifer Lee Chan to help us out with
this also but which one has a tougher
job more pressure on them this off
season uh well I’m gonna say done Ley
because he’s trying to he’s trying to
get a team ready for the for next year
and and Beyond
and I think John Lynch is trying to get
a team ready for now but I think Lynch’s
big decision is more about Brandon
auk and yeah well sure that could play
into a draft draft day of course but but
I
think that’s his big decision that’s
just one big decision it’s not like okay
we need a guy we need a rookie to come
in and and help us get over the top no
you need to figure out a way to get
Brandon on keep Brandon on on this
roster or if you’re going to replace him
find somebody who can get you what he
gives you which Brandon already has
really great great chemistry with Brock
pie that’s kind of important really
important so I I’m gonna say dun Le
though because his job is bigger in in
terms of what the Warriors have
established already they’ve won four
championships and John Lynch you know
he’s waiting for
One D leevy has there is a a standard
that he has to try and get back to and
that’s why I think his job is bigger so
they both not e both jobs are tough but
Mike’s job is tougher because um yeah he
he getting back to that standard is
gonna be really difficult the Niners
have gotten so close obviously to
winning that Championship they’ve gotten
to the Super Bowl recently two of them
recently so it’s so frustrating for the
faithful I get that but I’m GNA go with
dun leevy because of one reason and one
reason only Steph Curry if he’s still on
your roster the pressure is on to win
that Championship it’s pretty much
Championship or bust if you have an
alltime alltime great like that so yes
to me pressure’s on John Lynch but even
more so on Mike Dunley V
JR this was dubs talk I am Dalton that’s
