Matthew Lloyd believes that while Luke Beveridge will forever be a Bulldogs legend, it could be best for the club to part ways with the premiership coach.

Matthew Eagan uh is the uh boss of the football Department he was on the radio today speaking for the first time about the troubles at the dogs I’ve been blown away with with how aggressive some of the comments have been in the media about the guy who’s been coaching 10 years the footy club with a grand final win and obviously being in the Grand Final only 3 years ago it feels like it’s been a little bit aggressive and personal against beo we’re not developing there’s no doubt we’re in it for the win now there’s no reason why we bring in players like Coffield and hars to try to help build our depth as a footy Club so we’re definitely in it to win this year couple of aspects to take out of that and we’ll deal with them in I suppose chronological order the The Siege mentality that this club has now got and the convincing itself of the personal nature of criticism against the club being directed at miluk bage I find that staggering I think it’s been really balanced I look maybe maybe there’s been one or two and if you take Sam Draper’s comments out of it I think it’s been widely balanced but so that that’s one aspect of it the second part of it was the we’re here for the now that that’s different to what some people maybe the coach himself through his own actions as much as his words is is saying I think they’re under pressure because we all expect more from them and I think that even Matthew Egan himself there says we’re in it for the now and we’ve we bought in James HS and whoever else to the list because they thought they’re going to be better than what they were so it’s it’s amazing Eddie how quickly it’s changed from where the dogs were pre-season to where it is now they don’t seem like they’re on the on the same page which is why they’re under pressure well let’s listen to Luke beverage early preseason this year course a lot of changes in nine weeks of football including injuries but let’s have a listen to what he said back then so the team that represents the football club against mour in round one of the MCG will be our fif strongest and most ready team that has ever taken the field in the 90 of yeah we’re we’re humming it’s a really energetic um environment just what you said yeah so that that sort of you know rang true for me today sitting here at round nine and and hearing that in the preseason and and I just why I’m I’m critical and I’m questioning whether Luke’s still the right man is because uh there’s just so many players who are out of form who are good quality players and that’s when I ask you I think I judge a coach on is he getting the best like Craig McCrae last year was getting so much out you think of mccre and and ol marov you know players like that Brody M they’re not these are guys that have come from nowhere and are playing unbelievable football as I look at the Western bulldogs and I see highly talented players that for whatever reason just can’t find any form and I think it’s because of the lack of consistency within the club and that’s why I think he’s under enormous pressure you make your comments lightly when you you assess people do you feel they’d get more with another coach yeah I I think it’d be an unbelievable job to get at the Western Bulldogs next year and I think they could rebound pretty hard with a fresh set of eyes Daman can I ask you um let’s go through the timeline because there’s been at least three occasions where they’ve had this discussion obviously at board level and that goes back to resigning and everything in between it does just take a look at what’s on screen now and if you go back even a few months or or a year earlier than that that September 22 referencing there they they made a grand final so it was in their minds in that 2022 year seven goals up in an elimination final now in December of that year they resigned Luke beverage for for 2024 and 2025 he already had 2023 on the books they finished last season missing the eight and then one year after less than one year after they resigned him they then announced an external review and bring in the the football Mr fixer Peter Jackson to come in and now the parameters on that review Ed depending on who you speak to you know the way this works better than anyone some people will say that Luke beverage’s tenure itself was part of the review some will say that that was working backwards from him being a given as coach the truth as always in the middle what we’re saying here eight matches after the review and a season and eight matches after resigning him they’re back in this holding pattern of not knowing whether he will be the coach of the future certainly there’s no guarantees on 2025 lordy how long does the Premiership glow stay on a coach I think it gives you five six up to close to 10 years if you win a Premiership you know we’ve seen it with Adam Simpson as well in the last 12 months but look at this when since Luke beverage won the Grand Final uh they’ve only won a final in one season since in the last last eight years I don’t think they’ll win a final this year so it’s been six of the last seven seasons it should be seven of the last eight seasons so we keep hearing you know Matthew Egan and these people he’s a grand final coach he’s a Premiership coach and he’ll be a bulldog legend for Life Luke beverage that’s right and he deserves to be I mean they good enough to be to have Melbourne on toast at three quter time fell over in the in in in the last quarter obviously but but for the here and the now I think it’s bought him a lot of extra time um but I’m not to see how he gets out of this the takeaway for me and just going back half a SE demo when you went to the timeline of reigning him is when you when you take a coach or you buy a coach you’re buying for an extra couple of years you’re buying his plan as well because he’s got to present that and so part of presenting that is actually where the lists at where we are you know the Old premesh Clock as we use and so to have the CEO and then your head of football say we’re in it for the now but then a bit of the messaging being well we’ve got to change some positions we got to build we’ve got to come back up the lad it I wonder if that was the messaging at the time because it doesn’t sound like it from other leaders in that group this may be hard for you to answer but I’ve had it put to me by by club that that what we’re seeing now with Luke beverage is is Leon Cameron 2.0 now you’re a director of that club and what that referencing was to what happened to Luke beverage sorry Leon Cameron two years ago where the season started he was out of contract you gave him close to half the season made the call do you see that there’s a lot of similarities of course both nine years in the game both made grand finals of course Luke’s made two and 1 one so Mass tick for him but Leon won finals at every stage so very successful without getting the ultimate success at the Giants and I’m bit with lyy there comes a certain point there’s you know what’s that ter me there’s only so many different ways you can cook the sausages I think one one coach referenced alen jeans Allen jeans you can carry them you can FR them it doesn’t matter they’re still sausages yeah I think even Damen Hardwick used it when he left Richmond as well but sometimes a new coach can come in and build off an Old Coach and that’s where you want to get so it’s a decision that the Bulldog’s leadership has to make do we just need a fresh face come pre-season next year to give a different message the uh they had the day off training yesterday went danis and ker Beach um how many times can you do those types of things you know new coach does it maybe it’s fresh how hard is it to go into the trick bag for for somebody like B at the moment who’s such a a passionate coach I don’t think anyone underestimates his coaching ability or his ability I think he’d be a first coach he’d pick up if he if he left it’d be plenty lining up for him but you know we always say that the old saying is you know the DJ sick of the song before the public hear it but it can work the other way as well once the public are sick of the song they’re turning off what do you reckon for somebody like Bond P for example who’s an Exemplar in that side and I think that’s what’s it’s going to come down to I think the administrators at the club will I think over the next month 6 weeks they’ll be able to smell the breeze and and I’ve been seen this guy he’s giving his all for the club he’s getting no support from his teamm and he he getting dejected he’s achieved everything in the game he just wants another Premiership he wants to challenge again one more time and I just that’s that’s not happening for him so I think uh once the players start saying or sensing and the club starts sensing that he hasn’t got them anymore well then that’s when it’s trouble for the coach it’s a pretty defining period D the next five weeks Richmond gws Sydney Collingwood and and Brisbane there the Richmond one’s a massive one isn’t it the others they’re probably not starting at the moment based on form I’m just saying at the moment they’re not starting favorites in the the remaining four no they’re not and that’s why I use the term holding pattern on on where they’re at right now and it must be said and we we are believing we’re balanced in this reporting as we like to be all the time there’s no move we inside the club on him at the moment and that needs to be made clear that they are absolutely back in in three and five they are still convinced that they can turn it around so so quickly before we we move on you had sheeds for a long long time you were there when ESS and said right that’s enough of shads and haven’t played the final since um so you want to be careful moving on somebody who can really coach because there’s not that many out there who can so I I hasten to to add to the Western Bulldogs be very careful what you wish for in these situations how could how did sheeds freshen it up I know Mick mouse wasn’t into the gimmicks and he was able to keep sides up for the best part of 30 years I like what Chris Scott’s done over the offseason with where he’s got his assistant coaches from and seasoned campaigners and they may say we’ve done a bit of the same at the Western Bulldogs but um that’s that’s key bringing in fantastic assistants who will challenge you those that will challenge you and stand up to you and I I still see strange selections at the Western Bulldogs which have continued on it’s why they are no good in the first half of the Season then they finally pick the side they should be picking and they come home with a rush but then it’s all too later it’s the same store every year

  1. It’s hard to assess the Bulldogs list when Beveridge never plays their best team, let alone in the right positions.

  2. How many other jobs can you keep bringing up how you were good at your job almost 10 years ago… bizarre reasoning. Id be filthy if I was a bulldogs fan

  3. European soccer was first, the NBA was next and now it seems all other sports leagues are slowly following suit. The shelf life for coaches at a team (rebuilding clubs excepted) is probably now two to four years. Today's athletes are different more powerful hold more leverage and need different kinds of personality/ego management and motivation. I think the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights are THE example of this. In their first six years of existence (2018-23), they made it to two Stanley Cup finals, won one championship and made it to the semifinals/final four twice and the playoffs five times. Over those six years of consistent high performance theyhad three different coaches (firing the first coach they had who won coach of the year and led them to the Cup finals in their first ever season after a little over two years on the job).

  4. Be great if the Hawks can make a pitch to Bont. Hawks May not look like it right now but they seem to be right for an injection of a superstar to propel them to the next stage of their development. Unreal to imagine.!!😱

  5. The week to week inconsistency is just baffling to me. This team was nailing it with back end intercepts earlier in the season… and against the Hawks, it was a back end group that didn't really show up at all. To me, that isn't just the head coach… it's a collection of players that are not being held accountable. In the AFL, you can't afford to take a week off. On Bevo's end… he needs to be a lot more consistent on roles… and quit experimenting in mid-season.

  6. Barrett has always hated Bevo and would love him to get sacked . All this crap that comes out of Barretts mouth and he couldn't even play the game at a good standard if at all , he truely makes me sick .

  7. I felt like he won that GF with a game plan that worked on that day, but his method for that was quickly dismantled the next year and it just did not work when others found how to beat it.
Having said that, but for a bounce this way or that they almost beat Geelong.

Chris Scott once said “ you are never as good as it seems, and you are never as bad a it seems”.

I think that they are not far away unless they lose too many matches. That is the issue.

  8. I reckon going into the 2022 season most would have rated the Bulldogs list as way better than Collingwood's, who had just finished 17th. Yet see what McRae has done at the pies since – a prelim loss by 1 point and a premiership. I reckon he probably would have done just as well with the doggies list too, same goes for Chris Scott, John Longmire, other gun coaches, etc.

  9. Ive never seen a team play with so much arrogance when they played the Hawks. If they dont beat Richmond bevo will be gone by the Monday

  10. Bevo says he cares about his players, which is true. But the team doesn't need a nanny: it needs a coach with an effective game plan.

  11. Let’s face it, the bulldogs only won 2016 because of the pre finals bye. They were injured and limped into the finals. The rule change and the week off helped them fluke their way to the flag. Bevo is still in awe that he was able to pull that off. He doesn’t have an idea what to do next.
