So both of these clubs say seven on the bottom but what if I told you that maybe the golf industry aren’t telling you the whole truth about these two clubs so the reason for me making this video is I’ve had a client come to see me who hadn’t

Played golf for over 20 years but has been hit some new irons and he’s super excited about how far the ball goes with the modern equipment but maybe when he was at the facility was at and I don’t think it was necessarily a custom fit but maybe he didn’t get the

Information all the information he needed to get a proper picture as to why the ball was going that much further and I want you guys to fully understand this just so when you buy equipment you’re buying it for the right reasons and not necessarily having stuff hidden from you

So like I said he hadn’t played golf for over 20 years so I’ve got a 7n so this is my 7 that I used to use in listen carefully 1991 one so I’m sure most of my viewers were probably playing golf then not too many of them wouldn’t have

Been born but I’m going to hit a couple of seven ANS with this and let’s look at how this 7M from 91 performs but that one kind of launching quite High strike felt solid 84 M hour Club head speed 105 ball speed 7,700 Spin and 13 36 y carry and 139

Total now I know that for that 7n that is about how I would expect that to perform but I’m now going to get another 7n so one of the more modern 7ns and kind of have taken it to its fullest performance spec here and let’s hit this 79 and let’s see the difference

But remember these are both 7 on the bottom of the club so considerably bigger much bigger thick Top Line but that one launch him much lower felt like a rocket off the face so 86 mph Club head speed ball speed nearly 120 launching at 18° spin at

3,900 carry at 181 and total at 1 194 now I know what you’re thinking 136 to 181 carry that is absolutely game-changing and I agree and the excitement is well they’re both seven an aren’t they they might both have seven on the bottom but not created equally so

My old 7on is actually 38° of Loft now this eighton is 28 degrees but I can also with the fitting head make it two de stronger so 26° so if we look 12° difference which in theory is 3 to four clubs different so then we start seeing that’s the real

Reason in the distance now don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t want too many golfers using a 79 like that so let’s get rid of that that’s horrible great for improving my centeredness of strike but once we get a 7 iron like this in our hands the size of the head makes you feel

Confident you don’t have to flush it so then because of that you know that you can put that swing on it and anything solid strike wise is going to be super quick ball speed the bigger head maybe allowing you to swing a little quicker so more cleds more ball speed launching great spinning

Low carrying at 186 and rolling out nearly 200 yards so I know what you’re thinking I need to tell you what this one is don’t I well don’t worry about that now what I would say is it’s the lack of Loft that’s giving the distance so I don’t love the fact that the

Manufacturers Just put seven on it and I think the danger that we’re getting to with some of the equipment is the 79s are becoming such strong Loft that if you’re somebody who doesn’t have lots of Club head speed even with a good strike you’re just not going to launch

The ball up in the air and as a result of low spin the ball’s going to drop out the air too quickly and go nowhere and I do think a lot of golfers once you’re getting into 28 26° they’ve not got enough speed to get it going and it can

Be quite demoralizing that they can’t hit seven but what the manufacturers are doing is we’re taking Loft off the club now less Loft gives more ball speed also reduces back spin both of which are going to help the ball go further so if you just want a club that bombs the ball

Absolutely get that super crank 79 and the ball’s going to go miles but what you have to remember is if I’m hitting 79 185 carry and it’s 10 yards difference per iron my a is going to be 175 99 165 pitching wed 155 now all of a sudden then there’s a

Massive Gap from pitching wedge to Sand Wedge where there might be two or three other wedges go in so it’s really important that when you’re trying the product not just to look at that and think right okay that was great that one went a long way can I swing even harder at this

One and I feel I’ve got a little bit more Club head speed nearly 90 mph not the best strike but ball speed still very impressive and the carries right out there still so the modern equipment is fantastic but you do have to remember that just because something says seven on the

Bottom it’s a little bit irrelevant of what that says on the bottom it’s what you’re turning it into at impact and I think the manufacturers do a great job at getting the center of gravity low in the head to get the ball up in the a a

Little bit more but if I were to say that the 79 in this set is actually pretty much the same with this setup is the same Loft as the four iron in my set from 1991 I think straight away you can understand where it might be easy to

Find that extra 30 yards so this isn’t a video to talk you out custom fitting this is a video to make you go get fitted correctly for product ask the right questions so that when you do pick up 15 20 30 yards extra you understand that yes the equipment is helping how is

It helping and if it becomes at 7on is then your longest Club in the bag where it might have been 5on you might end up still buying 7s they’ve just got different numbers on the bottom but remember if you make the purchase you purchase for the right reasons help you

Play better golf but don’t be misled by some of the stuff out there in the industry ask the questions get the an as you need and then put the stuff in your bag that ultimately helps you play the best golf you can

  1. Engineering breakthroughs aside, a current 7-iron has about the same loft and length of a 5-iron from 30+ years ago. Note the 4+ degree difference in launch angle.

The thing about irons is that key question is not "how far" but "how near." If you have an iron set that gives you the right distances for the shots you need to hit, the numbers on the bottoms of the clubs don't matter.

  2. Hi Ali thanks for making this video. I'm 71, 5'6" and have been learning to play for 3 years. I got fitted for a set of Taylormade sim max ironswith 2° upright by American Golf who also sold me a Callaway Epic Max low spin. You guessed I was mis-sold. Yes the irons were hot of the face however the gapping between clubs was terrible. I sold them and bought a set of Cobra T rails PW-5 iron they have a shorter distance but I can launch them well with a consistent 10 yard gap between irons. I have 4 wedges which is great around the green. Basically from 140 yards I can make the green without much run on. To reach the 140 yards I use my Driver only 180 yards and then a Paradym X 4 hybrid up to 170 yards. 2 shots = 350 yards straight and on the fairway so happy golfing. I have learnt the most important aspect of your iron set is not distance but 10 yard gapping. I now don't trust custom fitting for many reason well it has never worked for me as I learn about the club on the course not at the driving range with all its stats.

  3. I play a set of Titleist irons that I purchased new in 1972, before the manufacturers really began the loft reduction game. I think Ping might already have been doing it. My 7 iron is 39 degrees. In my youth 50 years ago I could hit it about 150. Then I laid off the game until a few years ago, and when I came back I could only hit it 135, so I was tempted by some modern clubs. Instead, I have kept working to get the distance back, staying with the old clubs as a benchmark. It’s coming around, but now I’m wondering whether modern clubs would be worth it; I can just take a longer club, and I don’t particularly care about game improvement features. Just thinking out loud and would welcome comments.

  4. The biggest lie in the golf industry is convincing us that we buy a certain brand eight iron it'll magically go 190 yards cuz that's what we see on TV. Doesn't matter that it's adjusted so much it's basically a six iron now but it says 8 on it.

  5. Back in the 90s my Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot 7 iron was carrying 178 normal and 185 if I gave it some gas. Now they feel like I'm hitting rocks. My best golf came in the 2008-2015 when I learned how to dial it back a bit and stop giving it the beans. The last persimmon I had would go right at 300 yards, but now a good drive on the screws with a Paradym Triple Diamond only goes 290. In my estimation it has much more to do with the operator than the equipment. Technology has made golf for average golfers a touch easier……..Touring pros could break par with a set of Macgregor Tourney Customs from 1972. I agree 100% with @grahamhill6616.

  6. Thanks Ali, I have always suspected that to be the case, have run into several golfers who like to know what I'm hitting off a par3 tee and when I tell them a 7 iron they are happy to tell me they're only taking a 9. And yes my ball flight resembles theirs if not even higher.

  7. The SGI category will make sure you suck forever. Mis-stamped clubs blast the ball but… a 27* 7 iron wont stick a green. With these clubs, you'll need 4 or 5 wedges.

  8. Golf industry has been doing this for years to sell clubs ,my mizuno muscle back 919 tours are 7 iron 34 degrees goes around 170 etc, loverly clubs going into a good matched set of wedges .lets be honest cavity back shovels sell with all their bright shiny bits of paint and plastic on and stupid lofts to con people into hitting longer .you really can’t buy a game of golf but plenty of sheeple think you can .

  9. Ye, that's the problem. With low club head speed & not much loft, it's hard to get the ball to stop on the greens in the summer.

  10. The number one goal for club makers is to sell clubs. If They tell us their new line of clubs will go farther because they have a secret formula to make better clubs we all get suckered to buy. They drop the loft and make clubs longer so we hit farther and think we have found a great club. Nope, we’ve fallen for their marketing. Just because it goes farther does not mean you can hit your target. So now you have clubs that go farther now what, well you need more wedges for the shorter distances. More clubs sold and the circle keeps going.

  11. I believe you are part of themgolf industry,…no? I get it, its about the money, so hyperbole about gear is a marketing ploy. All the reviewers seek to monetize the hype. Itsmthe kaching baby,. If you could buy a game, with gear and fittings, my playing partner would be on the PGA. To be fair, the info here is accurate. Now what to do with the info? Hire a fitter?

  12. It's total bullshit by the manufacturers… I play with a lot of guys who boast about hitting "my 9" 160 yards… then when you look at their club it's as big as a mini driver. Stop the madness… without uniform standards for lofts we open the door for manufacturer manipulation and meathead players believing they are better than they actually are!

  13. I’ve stuck to a 48° pw, 44° 9i, 40° 8i, etc for nearly 30 years, I’ve gamed a titleist MB model for 25ish years and I usually have them bent 1° weak which puts them at my normal lofts plus takes a touch of offset off. It’s crazy how strong lofts have gotten.

  14. Watched an old shell golf match and comments about how they could only hit a seven iron x amount and they hit irons no much farther, well when a 7i is 30d launched at 17d. You better be hitting it longer.

  15. Ali is there any chance you can put launch angle on your trackman. Lot of people use toptracer range and don't have spin rate and club head speed. Would you be able to let me know what launch you should be aiming for with each club Ty 💪🏌️

  16. That's for people that aren't good yet. The strength is offset by the bottom weight they add . The distance should be reduced by the massive height they cause. If you hit that more than 150, you shouldn't be using it

  17. I think loft-jacking is a huge detriment to golfers getting into the sport. I started with entry level pxg's with a 28 degree 7i and just like you said, not enough spin or height. Only helps on links style courses or holes where you can take some advantage of roll out, but terrible for everything else. I switched to 10 year old Adams forged irons where my 7i was 32 degrees and my game instantly improved and I was able to repeatedly stick greens from 150 yards even with my over the top swing. Getting swing lessons right now and as swing is improving, I'm adding 10-15 yards already even on the 33 degree 7i. Airtime baby!

  18. Maybe instead of changing the ball that the golf association is going to change, maybe they should just regulate what lofts clubs can be.
Although that doesn't help with the driver. 😂

  19. I think it really doesn't matter what it says on the bottom. As long as you know how far YOUR "7 iron" goes and that it goes farther than an 8 and less far than a 6, it doesn't matter. The only reason this topic comes up is when dudes are standing on a par 3 and 3 of them grab their 7 and one guy hits his loft jacked 9 iron and insults their egos.

  20. I have a Wilson Staff spec sheet from 1970. 7 iron was 36 1/4" with 39° loft. The 2022 Taylormade Stealth 7 iron spec is 37 1/2" with 28° loft. So, yeah, painting a number 7 on what used be a strong 5 iron should gain one distance.
