so I’ll take the golf club I grip it in my lead hand and I hold this parallel to the Target line now I’ll take my trail hand rotate the shoulder externally to where it looks like I’m giving blood or doing a bicep curl and I’ll bring my trail wrist back to where I’d be holding the club now from here I’m going to keep the shaft that I’m holding in my lead hand level and I’m going to work the trail shoulder around my spine back towards back towards the golf club that’s in the center of my feet so I’m keeping this level so that I know I’m not changing Heights right here so I’d be working that around and so now I can feel that retraction here in my trail shoulder I’m almost trying to keep the arm in the same place and work that around my spine so your shoulders there have moved they haven’t been moved that would be the shoulder working into a retraction and an Abduction of the they actually did some work they actually worked yes you you’ll feel this this will be very this for the person my good friend Trevor salsman with us kind of give me a lesson more or less as we work through this these are things that I struggled with in my swing big time we see a lot maybe you struggle with as well where I don’t make my back swing I don’t get really a full turn right I don’t complete my back swing and my tendency with not turning enough for finishing my back swing is the arms get a little too lifty right and then for me with that when they get lifty they come out and then I’ve got to fix that with some tilting and extending the shallow late and and part of the point there right is to fix some of the early extension a lot of players get on the way down me included the keys here are to get a full back swing turn to really finish the back swing we’ll go through what that means with depth with depth with depth okay and so that’s something that that um I kind of want to you to guide us through maybe before I hop in Trevor I know there’s a couple little um feels and drills that we would go into that I saw you do can we do this one first with um getting a general sense of the body motion and then maybe how we would work retraction in with it Y and then we’ll kind of go in and I’ll go through it yeah so so I think this from a basic movement standpoint what we’re looking to do and to to Eric’s point to be able to create adequate depth with staying in our proper spine and yeah we need the shoulders working around the spine we need the shoulders working around the spine they work around the spine inclination what I see a lot of players do similar to like to to what you do as well where where we see the player who let’s say they turn level they turn the level turn off the ball lift we lose depth now we choose this direction for contact there’s our over the top that’s that person trying to create contact or what I used to do and what you do is we go this way way and this is the player that’s trying to use this to find more speed okay and that is all set up by the balance parameters that we have in our back swing how the shoulders move around the spine and to Eric’s point where our depth is being created or if we have depths I think it’s an important piece of the puzzle right there so first things first in explaining this when I’m right here if I’m just turning right here how much of my shoulders actually move they’ve been moved but they haven’t moved physically yet so this would just be taking the spine here and moving it so now if we look at the inclination of my shoulders what are they they’re level they’ve been moved but they haven’t moved correct so my shoulders have been moved by the rotation of my spine yeah but my shoulders haven’t moved yet this is where we see lift yes and then we see chest down arms up and now we have to choose a direction and and most players like this being extension video i k core most players with a no turn and lift wherever they’re coming from they’ll do the extension and the tilting like to help save that and shallow the shaft so like the root of the early extension was actually the lack of the finishing the turn and the depth yeah yeah exactly without the the shoulders moving around the spine so I think it’s important firstly for us as players even to to like for Eric even is what do this what does this feel like like this was a hard piece even for me as well it’s this was a lesson for me is what does it feel like to actually move the shoulder around the spine so my first drill that I like to do this doesn’t involve hitting a golf ball this is this is about creating a feel so that I know where I’m trying to get to so we have a golf club right here in the center of our stance representing the middle of our spine so what I would do here is I would place this golf club on my shoulder line not in the center of my humoris or my elbow on my shoulder line I would take my normal setup from the ball and what I’m going to do is I’m going to make the grip end of the club point at the golf ball so there goes the grip end of the club pointing down at the golf ball now the club head side and my trail hip they’re going to start to work back in towards this line in the center of my feet so they’re making a uturn back this way while my shoulders are working at a right angle to my spine here as opposed to yes right okay so I think that’s one of your more basic feels basic drills I I would almost call this your daily PT right here I give this to a lot of players and I call it this is your daily PT to learn what the inclination of the shoulder needs to be and how those are working around the spine now for the player that really struggles with the retraction portion of it like you me what I’ve done that was huge for me so I’ll take the golf club I grip it in my lead hand and I hold this parallel to the Target line now I’ll take my trail hand rotate the shoulder externally to where it looks like I’m giving blood or doing a bicep curl and I’ll bring my trail wrist back to where I’d be holding the club now from here I’m going to keep the shaft that I’m holding in my lead hand level and I’m going to work the trail shoulder around my spine back towards back towards the golf club that’s in the center of my feet so I’m keeping this level so that I know I’m not changing Heights right here so I’d be working that around and so now I can feel that retraction here in my trail shoulder I’m almost trying to keep the arm in the same place and work that around my spine so your shoulders there have moved they haven’t been moved that would be the shoulder working into a retraction and an Abduction of the they did some work they actually work there yes and you you’ll feel this this will be very this for the person that hasn’t done this before this is going to feel very different yes you’re going to feel something in your scapula that you’ve never felt before and when we put your Club in your hands with that that would help get the depth right of the hand pth the club to absolutely so when the right arm the trail arm stays the same and what we can see in this down the line video you can see where the depth of this golf club would now be yes so it’s back here by my trail heel versus lifted up on my tow line right here and I know why don’t I hop in and do the first version and I know there’s we might add a little layer to this with like a club shaft um over the shoulder plane but let’s say I was doing the first version Y and I’m trying to get the general concept like for me I think a lot of players would turn a little too level potentially not get a full quote unquote turn with the arm lift right that being the the thing we’re looking for so when you’re saying this down the this ball Target line right here this would be this would be the ball line okay and I can go a little outside of that I’m assuming it’s going to be it’s going it’s going to be a little bit outside of it yep outside but but it’s going like back behind the ball right right okay and you’re saying then as I get the Shoulder this line back behind the ball and feeling some down that my hip and my shoulder are actually like working towards the club like towards the target yeah they’re making a U turn that direction okay and that’s going to just as a general sense help me feel the overall body motions yeah and I think that piece right there with the hip is also one of the pieces that helps us finish and complete the turn to the top complete the turn so if I were to combine that sensation kind of the right hip and shoulder back around with this with this feel so I’m kind of holding it with my left hand Y and then this is kind of like this yep so that would be externally rotated and then You’ hold this as if you’re griping the golf club right there yeah and then we would just keep that level you’re going to work that arm so what we can see from a face on view we can see we can see Eric’s scapula right there that would be retraction of the shoulder and we can see how much depth he would have there yes that definitely feels like my shoulders working more than normal because it doesn’t work a lot normally there you go yeah so I kind of feel that muscle it’s like a Romo like inside of my shoulder blade M kind of working around this way yeah and you can see this you can really see it what’s need is like if I hold my fist right there we can really see that P piece from a face on camera view right there you can see the right shoulder like on this side of my body yeah the raction of it okay so as I’m combining those two feels like if I put a club if I put a club in there with that and my old bad version is like no turn here this right side of my shoulders on this side of my body yeah right this hip I mean I I usually get the hips pretty good but I don’t get that shoulder background at all and then my arms haven’t gone in really at all they’re just up yep okay so I’m feeling the let me give that with a club feel see that’s a huge retraction there huge and I already get like a pretty big hip turn so it’s definitely for me feeling that not like I’m trying to like coil against the lower body or anything but just because I already turned the hip a lot yep I definitely need to feel the the shoulder back around yeah and what this might feel this might feel like it’s actually adding time to your motion like feel like you’re adding time to your motion which I get too if you’re someone like me no turn lifty kind of short and quick yep yeah so add an ex that’s a great Point let me hit one with that so I’m expecting if I do this with all my other swing elements I’m anticipating my path will be a little more now I’ll probably o might overdraw this a little yeah might start a little further right the first time yeah so I’m really feeling that shoulder I’m that side of my body yeah I feel that muscle inside of my shoulder blade kind of squeezing there a little bit so it should be kind of a longer swing more round oh you did it and there’s what I would expect like if I hit my stock shot on ball one when you guys are doing this so I hit that very solid felt great I bet all in all you’re going to hit it at probably farther but at least as far probably farther I normally let’s say hit like a three to five yard draw that probably Drew 10 yards y on swing line that’s like normal y so for you if you guys do this and you slice it that might just take some of the slice off could could absolutely finishing the turn and adding depth like you said and now as I’m doing this shev if you see things I’m that I could do better don’t be shy I’m feeling this going kind of down so so when you showed it originally I saw you were kind of feeling a little bit of this like right away yeah so we would have a side we’ have lateral flexion or a side Bend of the lead side early then we would have rotation we would have our rotation piece we have our rotation piece now as we start to turn then we would have an extension and a retraction of the shoulder right there so it’s really the retraction piece that I need more yeah for you in your case I would say your your piece right here is getting the getting the shoulder blade there yeah so it’s man I don’t know I don’t know if the words were correct but here’s the shoulders are getting moved yep here the shoulders moved yeah those are the shoulders working around the inclination of the spine my shoulders are working around me versus just getting me that’s a really good way to say let me hit another one with that and obviously this for me I mean I’m hitting a shorter iron but especially as my clubs get longer I can see that with driver when I do it the B I’m like man I really advantageous there yeah get a couple get a hold of a couple drivers advantageous so I’m feeling the lead shoulder back right hip and shoulder around but I’m really feeling that shoulder retraction almost the right shoulder on like the left side of my body yep and definitely time so that feels like my back swing to your point just a tick longer yep same thing probably about a 10 yard draw yep right so the more that I would do this retracting and turning that gives me some more depth if I’m already normally up here and out and extending to get you know shallow that could be like a double shallow then then we’re taking away a reason to need to early extend to get the club on plane so again reasons why people early extend a lot of time is because if they didn’t the club would never plan out beautifully said so as I do this Trevor as I’m doing that and the club should be getting more depth on the way back yep we’re saying now the clubs are actually deepen back here it’s going to be on plane without me needing to really extend right so can we do this where you kind of hold the club over my shoulder plane absolutely just to see this is a cool one to especially to explain from from a feel perspective if you if you are an arm lifter let’s called an arm lifter yeah and I’ll let Eric explain what his feel is here cuz I had a very similar experience with this so when we go here so I’m going to hold this club at a right angle to his spine right here yeah so like that feels to me who’s lifting more like my arms are going like around my hip y i remember the first time I was telling Trevor with Steve Iraqi did this to me and I’m going like I feel like the club’s here I’m like Steve are you sure that’s right are you sure that’s right he’s like yeah yeah you’re good and then I look on camera and it’s right on it’s like great depth and we might Define great depth or where we’re looking for is like you know the lead arms roughly on the shoulder plane maybe the hands are behind the shoulder right the butt of the club’s kind of nearest the ankle those might be some things maybe we’ll put a picture of you know a good Grant weight to show what good death might look like but anyway if we hold that club there the idea Trevor I assume would be hey if I do these body motions better that would be easier to do but I might still feel like really from kind of the takeaway to the top my hands are lower yes this is going to this will probably feel not probably this is going to feel lower lower for 90% of us that are arm lifters same with me I had a very similar experience with this when I started getting the club more on plane but to Eric’s Point what’s advantageous about this is that the club gets back on its plane naturally and very early that just means we’re in a position to go we can go we can continue taking that club around the ark now so like from a good spot here you’re saying I don’t really have to do much work it’s already like right it’s already going to be good yeah so you take a you take somebody who’s up here on a 70 Dee plane well they’ve got to get that club now down from here they’ve got to get it back into this plane angle and they’ve got to bring it down to here then they have to go there’s more movement right there as opposed to keeping it in that 55 60 Dee range which where we’re where we’re putting you at and obviously some players can do that but the majority of golfers that we work with that would be very difficult okay okay here we go so I’m I’ll just go slow on this first one this is like Steve Circa 2016 all over again so I would assume that probably arm plane looks pretty solid and I could tell like I haven’t been practicing this and I’ve been getting more up because that feels feels lower again yeah feels lower again feels lower so let me let me do that um let me kind of grab that same feel here without the club in there just a try so I’m going to feel the retraction and definitely feel the arms definitely feel the arms lower now notice what the height of the golf ball did not as Flo high and honestly like you know we film and I hit balls and stuff but my practicing in playing kind of goes like this so like if I’m on it and practicing it on video I can kind of get this back pretty quick but if not my Tendencies go back to this I mean for it’s 2024 this is since 2016 so quite a while so if you guys have this in there you know you might need to feel these turning pieces right hip right shoulder a little bit of this back you might need to feel these retraction pieces you might need to feel the arms being lower you know for a while it’s not something we need to like graduate out of real quick yeah and when we’re doing this again to Eric’s point do it at a pace that you know and you can feel when he does that one more time do that one more time do it at a pace that you know and you can feel that that has gotten all the way there that the that right shoulder has retracted to there okay let me do one more yeah definitely needs to feel like um slightly longer tick tick TI of like an extra second to get that shoulder around yep but I that was pretty good I I think those pieces for someone who has the same issues as me will be very helpful if we were doing a real lesson we would probably hit more we’d look at video we probably do more with the the the line on there I would want to see hey when I felt that what did it look like oh wow that looked perfect now I’m comfortable feeling that that low and we’re not saying Trevor like I’m not trying to whip it in right like this it’s kind of a neutral takeaway just with them as the shoulder retracts the arms being yeah this is this is almost on shoulder plane right here on should just cuz I’m coming from lify it feels lower exactly kind of all right that’s a good one maybe we’ll just keep doing a lesson after this we’re going to do one more after this but Trevor solsman all of his info will be down below inperson lessons online lessons YouTube channel all that stuff um if you guys have any questions always leave a comment 2. I think you may have finally nailed the MAIN fix for early extension. word to everyone: This isn't resolved overnight.. there is a lot of work involved.
