Shots back of Davis Riley and Nick Hardy
last year you can see where they are on
the leaderboard this year they’re
already looking forward to having a run
over the weekend as this year they’re
hoping to avenge the loss that
was you know we we played together at
the World Cup in 2018 I believe um and
did well in Australia I think we
finished TI for
fourth um I feel like the first five or
six years when this event had changed
you know some our schedules kind of
didn’t really line up a couple years you
know I remember I had a really good
Friend’s Wedding so I couldn’t come to
this event but um came together last
year and we played great so we decided
to run it back which was fun and how
would you say that this format is
complimentary to your games well I I
think that you know Nick and I play very
similar games
um keep it in play hit lots of greens
we’re both very good
Putters um and
so uh yeah best ball format we have
usually two balls in play and two
chances for birdie every hole which I
think um takes pressure off one guy and
um and then in this alternate uh shot
format we just again we we keep it in
play nothing too crazy um limit mistakes
um if we are out of position we’re uh
very smart about the next shot and and
trying to set up a chance to get up and
down so um yeah hopefully we got two
more days um we got a chance yeah 13
underpar as you can see that represents
a two underpar effort for the day
although two bogeys on their card today
afterwards the team of Rory maroy and
Shane Lowry met with the
media Shane short game was on display at
a bunch of different places he had some
really sweet bunker shots and some
really good chip shots does that free
you up knowing that obviously you’re not
looking to put him in a bad position but
that that your partner that tidy with a
wedge yeah especially on some of the the
easier holes you know the um the par FS
some a couple of the shorter par fours
to be able to get the ball up there and
close to the green um yeah you know
Shen’s got a wonderful short game and it
does you know it gives me confidence
going for those greens you know whether
it be the par fours or the par fives
that if I get it anywhere up there
around the green I’m going to you know
have a you know a very good look for
birdie after after he hits his and after
a couple of C that I know that he wanted
to drop in didn’t fall for him did you
say anything to him it looked like a
couple times you may have said don’t
worry about it no problem so yeah I
think just um as sh said like you know
after those it’s it’s easy to to sort of
get hard on yourself and I just trying
to keep him as positive as possible and
just remind him that that I’m here and
I’m here to back him up in any way that
I can so yeah just you know trying to
trying to keep him
positive right couple more guys Shane
you said last night with early tea time
you you were got your goal was to stay
out of trouble get a lot of time this
afternoon is the goal still the same
yeah I no no no no no we’re here to play
a golf tournament we’ll enjoy ourselves
we go for a nice dinner tonight I’m not
sure we have a restaurant booked but I’m
not sure where um and yeah I I’ll do the
same thing I do every time of an
afternoon off I’ll go back to the hotel
freshen up and I go for a little stroll
around the city and just have a look at
you know just look around that’s what I
do they would finish and you can see
their scorecard of 5 under 67 a very
very good score considering all of the
conditions what did they consider what
was their opinion they spoke with our
Steve
Browski a lot of positives to take away
from five under 67 in for this format
where’s your level of satisfaction
considering what you guys did yeah I
think we did exactly what we needed
today to get back in position played a
lot of nice golf and we’ll take some of
that momentum over to tomorrow we know
Xander the ups and downs of this format
how does the 18th hole for you guys
today sort of describe the the patience
that is required yeah I mean Pat and I
were talking we we knew we needed to
sort of move there’s just like a a level
of urgency needed when you play this
sort of format even best ball or or
forums um you kind of just look up at
the board and you feel like you just
need to keep pressing and pressing so we
just look at the big picture and overall
we like you said we we did what we
needed to do today to sort of move back
up into a good position you guys won
here two years ago tied for fourth in
2023 we discussed it yesterday but why
does this partnership work so well
I mean we’ve done it I we we’ve been
we’ve been at it for some time now you
know Pat and I are were seasoned vets
out here it feels that way at least and
uh we enjoy each other’s company and we
enjoy this event and uh play in front of
these fans always good to catch up all
the best on the weekend thanks Steve
thanks berco all right trip so one year
ago Klay and schafle set the tournament
record in forsam with a 63 in this round
did today present a different set of
challenges for this squad
uh no question about it I mean the golf
course was firmer faster the wind was
definitely blowing uh quite a bit out of
the south-southeast and and it was a you
know a win that that L A lot of the the
short par fors play fairly easy but you
really had to watch some of the par 3es
they absolutely love this format that it
was the round of the day I mean nobody
shot better than five under uh that made
the cut so they are right there doing
what they had to do after what they said
was a slow start shooting a 60 five in
best ball it’s funny they they actually
do play this format better than they do
uh the the better ball format seems like
they kind of get off to slow starts or
at least they did last year and this
year but they catch up real quick when
they get to this this kind of format and
I think it’s for you know a couple of
reasons is how similar their games are
when you look at at players that that
have different type games I don’t think
they they menend quite as much cuz a lot
of people will say put a short hitter
with a long hitter because he’s going to
be good with the wedges I disagree I
think you got to have very similar Gams
and when you look statistically at these
two guys this is last year’s ranks and
actually if you look at xanders this
year and Patrick hadn’t gotten off to
the best start Patrick’s uh Xander
numbers are even more like Patrick’s
were especially off the T and T to green
and you know around the green they have
very similar games and I think the
reason why that is Matt is when you’re a
good ball Striker both these guys are
you’re not used to being in awkward
positions so you know you take a Jordan
spe and he’s going to put you in some
positions that he can escape from that
these guys aren’t used to being in and
that’s why you’ve got to have guys with
very similar type games that are used to
how they play they both play very
methodically they both hit a lot of
quality Iron shots they all both have a
lot of good looks at birdie and greens
and regulation so I think that’s why
it’s you need to look no further than
that and then all the oh also the fact
that they’re very good friends this is a
this could be a you know is going to be
a really good pairing in president’s
cups and rer cups for a long long time
get used to it they are a tough out in
those team competitions without question
well trip I want to put your theory
about similar games to test here with
our next team we know that it’s Rory
Mary’s tournament debut he’s playing
alongside of a good friend in Shane
Lowry they’re definitely delivering on
the entertainment value that we had
hoped but how do you think their games
are meshing
well look here’s the thing they they
don’t have quite as similar game because
there are very few people who have a
game like Rory maroy the great thing
about what Shane brings to the table is
he’s a very very good ball Striker I
mean the fact that they trusted him to
hit on the odd holes says everything
about it because you you always put your
best um Iron player on the odd holes
particularly because of the par 3es
three of the part 3es are are odd holes
and you also I think with Rory’s
Firepower you can get up around the
greens with with uh Rory hiton on the
even hole so I think that’s a formula
for them even though uh I I I they also
have the chemistry so they are living up
to the hype these are two guys who came
in with Targets on their back they
clearly were the favorites and they are
delivering and it also looks like
they’re having a ton of fun I know they
didn’t play this last Rider cup together
but I see these two as a a good pairing
for Luke Donald in the next Rider cup
the only only problem is they’re both
experienced players and sometimes with
younger players you got to put Rory and
Shane with some of the younger players
and I think that’s probably what kept
Luke from doing it in this La last Rider
cup but you you can’t second guess what
Luke Donald did in Italy and that’s for
sure and we are back to best ball
tomorrow so this team that we’re talking
about it’ll be fun to see the way they
perform back in that format
