recently stumbled across a great tip and
Bryson Des Shambo was talking about
tension in his golf swing and he was
right because he was sort of saying the
same thing over the years I’ve had lots
of golf lessons where I might be missing
the ball a little bit left and right and
the pro would tell me it’s because I’m
gripping it too tight I need to relax
the grip and then you’d get the sort of
analogy of like imagine you’re holding
you know a tube of toothpaste and you
want to make sure you don’t squirt the
toothpaste out right but when you sort
of think about it logically that’s quite
difficult thing to do because of the
simple fact that you swinging The Club
at like nearly 100 miles per hour and
therefore you know you’re almost going
to let go of the club so there has to be
an element of tension in between your
fingers right but what Bron then went on
to talk about was tension in the arms
and how he uses tension as his friend in
the golf swing and a lot of people are
scared of tension and I kind of think
that’s really true what I’m going to do
to elaborate my point is I’m going to
replace my left arm momentarily with a
bit of rope so if I lassue this over
okay so I remove my left arm with a bit
of string for a little bit and uh so you
can see I’ve got my right hand as normal
and this is my left hand replacement so
when we get set up you want to have an
element of like he said tension and what
that is known as is known as an
extensive Force which basically means
you can see here the way I’m pushing my
hands away from me in my setup position
so lots of people will get into the
posture and they’ll stand kind of really
close and their arms really soft and all
this is limb you don’t want that that’s
why Bryson stands further away pushes
his arms further away from his body so
he gets a nice amount of tension in that
setup position if you like that
extensive Force which means I’m able to
keep keep the Rope Tau from here you
want a nice wide back
swing tension as you rotate up towards
the top tension you want to turn as you
bring your arms back down tension you
want to release your right arm through
tension see what I’m doing and those are
the things that we all need and those
are the things that you don’t want to be
afraid of because like I say if you are
somebody get rid of that for a sec if
you are somebody who has limb palms and
then you swing back and you have limb
Palms you’re going to sacrifice all that
width you want to make sure that you
feel like you’re pushing that bit of R
now I don’t mean like hyperextend so
you’re uncomfortable right just
comfortably straight feel like there’s
an element of tension going through your
arms so you’re pushing the club away
from you okay so then when you get to
your back suing position you going to
feel like you’re pushing the club away
as you rotate through push the club away
and if you do that it’ll make a massive
difference wel good it I’ll see you soon

  1. I recently discovered a fascinating move, on my own! Something like this, If I have my elbows relaxed and nearly in a ‘chicken wing’ position at address, I then lock my lead arm (left elbow) which locks both arms in with no added tension to my grip either. Really works wonders and keeps my elbows together nicely throughout my swing. But to get it right I have to really relax my arms and bend them slightly then lock it in and it seems to really work a treat.
