If they best on the world don’t use the latest and greatest when it comes to their irons… why are we consistently looking to upgrade!?

Tor Pros are renowned for their ball striking so why is it some of the best players in the world choose to use older equipment that US amateur golfers would potentially turn our nose up at so let’s take a look at four very different affordable irons that the best players

In the world are using and how each iron’s going to differ slightly for you guys watching this video and the pros and cons of all of them and I was shocked with the last option in this list how old it is 20 2011 and it really goes to show if you

Find something that works well you might as well just stick with it but the Godfather of Old Iron Equipment has finally upgraded and I’ll be fascinated to know if this new upgrade actually stays in the bag I’m of course talking about the ping s55 and the amount of ping players

That had this in the bag over the last 10 years and have upgraded to the Ping blueprint Matt Fitzpatrick very much made this iron hit the headlines when he won the US Open with it we’re talking a club again a club that came out almost 13

Years ago but for some reason even with the technological advancement ping wasn’t able to find a head type that was able to do basically what this one did and if you’re wondering what that combination is is having the ability to be forgiving because I definitely didn’t

Hit that one out the middle yet not be offset and be able to produce quite a a decent amount of Spin and one of the more higher options in this list at 33° and they’re more Del lofted irons through this list which will be surprising to some of you watching this

Video but with its track record and price at the moment you can’t really lose at buying the s55 iron as there’s a good amount of demand for it and around the £250 potentially cheaper potentially a bit more expensive it’s a very good investment in the long term this next

Find was seriously interesting to me because this is the Brand’s cheapest model when it comes to this type of Loft and head type and you’ve got a player in the top 200 golf world rankings deciding to use it and I’d love to ask Justin why that is the case because I think it

Would give a lot of golfers quite a lot of comfort knowing that maybe if you find an iron set that just works for you isn’t the most up to date hasn’t got the most technology adjustable waiting miled faces all these technical terms that we keep hearing

Your iron set to play some of your best golf he has a set of o211 St irons in the bag and this was dated last month so again very current and looking on the pxg website you can’t get the o211 STS anymore and imagine that’s because they

Are over 2 years old meaning the new ones are going to be released which is great news for you guys that want this blade style head 32° so actually quite powerful but again for you faster swinging players don’t don’t like the look of offset don’t like the look of

Anything chunky behind the ball and let’s be honest you still have to Middle these a good 90% of the time to get them to perform this is a great value option 2 years old great grips great condition meaning pound-for-pound in this list in terms of how current and the price you

Can get them for pound for pound this is kind of the best option throughout this list arguably the star from the Ridder Cup USA team and with it being the most de lofted and also the most forgiving set through this entire list I’m pretty sure this is going to be a

No-brainer affordable option for a lot of you watching this video and that shot right there probably explains why I’m probably more suited to this type of iron head cuz I didn’t catch it well whatsoever yeah I got a decent amount of carry and relatively appropriate numbers an AP

2718 iron just before it went into the T-Series and even all those years back how good does this club look and before we go into the price of this club we should have a quick reflection of Patrick hanley’s bag as a very good example of if it works stick with it cuz

I’m pretty sure this bag wouldn’t look out of place outside your local Pro Shop apart from maybe the circle te putter in the bottom of it which is arguably four times the amount of money for that putter than this entire bag we’re talking titless TS3 driver 120 £40 we’re

Talking 915 fairway wood £60 ts27 heavenwood again very good option for a lot of you golfers even the faster ones that just want a cheat stick off the T box and not vogi sm9 not vogi sm8 but vogi sm7 wedges again 50 a wedge I’ll

Show you some prices of the 718 up here on the right hand side and yes it’s a bit more offset and potentially a bit Del lofted for you really fast players but we’re talking about some of the best players in the world being able to use this to great effect not to mention

Jordan SP went on an absolute tear with the ap2 and this bag for a very long time so yes potential fliers with this club if you do really catch out the rough but let’s be honest that’s very controllable if you have the right technique from one top 10 player in the

World to another very similar head Styles very similar offset but there is one glaring difference between these two irons and the good thing is it’s not the price tag and just like Matt Fitzpatrick this tor proo loves keeping equipment when it works and in terms of a forgiving High

Lofted option for potentially some of you guys that launch the ball too low keep your hands too far ahead of it can’t get your five iron off the ground this potentially is your answer Victor hofland has had the i210 in the bag for an incredibly long time and the price of

Them is very affordable sadly I haven’t got the i210 in the studio but the i200 LOF exactly the same arguably looks the same and arguably has the same amount of Technology but both options very good price point but the ap2 and i200 for me are for two different golfers even

Though they both swing quite fast 90 M hour quite steep quite held off low penetrating ball flights needs help with the Loft but as you can see my technique is the bit that’s launched the ball so low there I’ve come down onto the golf

Ball I’ve HD it very well quite a lot of distance hence why a lot of Pros would go to something a bit more lofted and a bit more bladed so we get more spin as let’s be honest what player wants to hit the 7 iron 190 and for the type of

Golfer that picks the ball very clean hands behind the ball well the ap2 then makes sense at 30° Loft at the similar speed because if ID hit that same shot with the Ping launch goes up efficiency goes down and obviously we lose distance no right or wrong answer but

Obviously I want to just highlight the differences between these irons there’s no wonder I don’t have the last iron in this option here in the studio because it is one of the oldest I didn’t even know Cobra made a forge version of this type of head I couldn’t believe what

Lexi Thompson has in the bag currently and I haven’t looked through a track record I imagine there’s been more upto-date irons there in the past however she’s recently gone back to the S2 Forge irons on eBay well under200 and to be honest it would be cheaper if more of these were actually

Out there because I can’t imagine there’s much demand but she highlights some very important factors with this iron and it’s the fact that she has a nice cavity back Forge 31° iron that obviously does incredibly well for her and putting technology and everything else to one side she’s obviously found a

Set that the moment that is slotting nicely into that forgiveness as well as launch and spin category that let’s be honest all golfers are looking for any questions on your golf bag or your golf game sasg golf academy.com and I’ll catch you guys later

  1. Great video Simon. I confess I’m addicted to buying clubs. Bizarrely my current set up with G400 woods and 716 AP2 is my favorite because they just work for me., but I get in this mode of thinking I need newer clubs. Very timely video and great reminder.

  2. Hi Simon, I currently have sim 2's and am about to re-grip with jumbomax's as I have arthritis in my hands. I was looking at a set of the ping I200's, do you think it would be worth trading in the sim 2's and going with the I200's as my handicap is dropping now into roughly 16 range?

  3. I bought wilson cb irons 5-pw 2021 version brand new for 5000 kr that equals 375 pounds. Feel like I got a vert good deal on irons i probably never gonna need to replace.

  4. These pros still have these clubs provided for them new and fitted to them by kept stock the manufacturers still though, and a lot of the older stuff on the market now is now pooped

  5. Lexi has had the S2 since they came out and doesn’t find the newer models to suit her as well

  6. Golf isn't a serious sport, it's a money making industry, if it was serious about it's participants the equipment would be so restricted there would be virtually no difference for anyone and so a lot less money to be made, everyone plays with a different ball for god sake! You all feed into it, started with Fitzpatrick "upgrading" think he's probably changed his clubs
