  1. I only go to the range before a round. I hit only 30 balls. My first 10 are 40 yard pitches, then 10 with a mid iron 6-8, and then 5 with a 4 iron and the last 10 are with driver or a fairway wood. I always work on 2 things when I do this. I always have a tee I stand on with my back foot (early extension and weight balance) and then I work on my takeaway. Both are my trouble spots! The only time I really go to just hit multiple balls is with my instructor where we are working on something! I spend much more time practicing short game and putting.

  2. Good advice Matt, the aim one is something I need to do more of! Guilty of just aligning to the mat and hitting with no target 😬

  3. Soon the snow will finally melt off the range. Good tips Matt
Sims were fun to keep swinging but didn’t feel good for practice ready to see real ball flights again

  4. Great advice, ,guilty of all of the mistakes hitting too many balls then heading out on the course, fatigued no better prepared and equally frustrated
Saved to my watch later as a reminder next time I go to the range .
    Cheers Matt

  5. Good advice Matt.
I am 66 years old and have been a Cat 1 player (0-5) all my life. Every time I go to a range I despair at what I see. Instead of trying to groove a natural tempo and “pureing” a golf shot, they flail like maniacs, usually with a driver as their main weapon. The five best quotes in golf (only my opinion).
“ You drive for show and put for dough”.
“Your swing is fine. It’s your head that’s fkd”.
“What did you shoot today? I have no idea, I was too busy not giving a sh1t”
“Don’t hit it harder, hit it better”.
“If I have to force a golf shot, I am making the wrong choice”.

Golf is a pastime, not a study in minor ballistics. It should be treated as such, and the reason golf courses are built in lovely locations and not a weapons laboratory.

  6. The golf range is great if used correctly. As Matt said you have to have intention/purpose without it there is nothing to judge it aganist.

  7. I use my Garmin R-10 monitor, Practice off grass always, and continue with a pro from time to time. I have a friend who is new to the game who refuses to take lessons. He shoots and average of 140 and I'm being kind. He claims that he can't afford lessons. I told him to stop playing and use his money with a pro. I can't bring myself to play with him anymore. because he doesn't listen

  8. I pretend to play a course I know very well (just tee shots and approaches obviously)….And I try and keep a "score". This way I am never hitting the same club twice.

  9. The biggest problem with golf ranges is Shots don’t have any score card consequences- The mat is flat – Zero slope – one dimensional stance – Take out one ball choose your club Target hit a shot and make a commitment to donate £20 to charity if you miss ! Bet you won’t do that ! But it would put you under a little more stress

  10. 1 other tip from personal experience, if you are lucky enough to have access to trackman, take a lesson on how to utilize the tools it presents. My last lesson ended up being on how to look at the numbers Trackman provides and figure out what they meant to me and how I could utilize them in my swing development. It can be a very useful diagnostic tool if you know what all the bits and bobs are for. Good luck in your upcoming comp Matt!

  11. Great deal of truth here. My friends make fun of me for hitting too many balls.

    What’s that?

Oh. I beat them consistently by about 15 shots.

  12. My local range doesn’t have all the bells and whistles like this one. So what I do is pull out the 18Birdies app, pick a course, and use the GPS to “play” a course. If hole one is a par 4, I’ll hit my “drive” then estimate what my remaining distance would be, hit and iron shot, then repeat with each hole. That way I’m not just hitting 10-15 shots consecutively with the same club while forcing myself to practice like I would actually play. And if it’s fairly dead at the range I’ll even go over to chip/putt after each hole.
