If that wasn’t enough I’ll make sure you’re on top of the latest rules of golf!
I’m not good enough for a custom fitting I can’t afford a custom fitting two misconceptions I get in the comments of this Channel all the time today I’m going to be showing you the things you should be considering before a custom fitting and why these two misconceptions are completely wrong I have been for so many custom fits on this channel and during that time I’ve really learned the dos and don’ts of what you need to do to get the best performance today I’m at American Golf in Le and I’m going to be showing you nine things you need need to consider before you go to your fit in to make sure you get the right performance on a budget that suits you the really important thing when you’re having a fit in is using the high-end premium golf ball because it’s just going to make all those numbers from the launch R you’re using more accurate like the cheaper the golf ball is or if you’re using a range ball somewhere things such as the spin and the launch just aren’t always going to be correct so having like a high-end ball is really important now here at American Golf they’ve got three different Tade golf calls that they fit with they’ve got the two t options which vary in terms of Spin and height so you can test something if you need to hit the ball higher or lower they’ll help and they’ve also got a softer T response option so all three of those are really high quality golf balls they’re going to give you really good accurate data which is going to help get the fit better and it also means you can kind of test the different options and see if maybe you should be changing your golf ball as well so you’ve got loads of different golf balls here tailor made which I’m a fan of Cu I use the pigs but I think it’s interesting you have different models would you use that within the fitting to say get the numbers where you want them to be yeah no uh it’s a big part of what we do and uh you know where clubs have come in the last 10 years balls have come in the last five in terms of the advancement so typically speaking if a guy doesn’t hit it very hard we might need to go for a slightly softer ball and I think that’s where guys misinterpret a soft ball when I say a soft ball it’s to do with the compression Factor yeah so say your clubit speed is not that high and you’re using a ball with the high compression Factor hence has got a softer cover he doesn’t maximize what he’s getting out that ball cuz he doesn’t compress it as well as he would with something that’s a lower compression so if it’s really firm when you hit it with the driver it doesn’t squash enough for you to get to the core in the middle and like use the full properties of the ball so actually using something softer in that sense is going to actually mean you’re using all the layers and you’re actually getting all the benefits of like the golf ball design so a big part of getting ready for a is actually knowing what you want to improve is there a certain bad shot that you hit that you’d like to hit less is there something with your clubs that you think just doesn’t feel right maybe they feel too long or Too Short what are really good areas that you want to work on it might be that you struggle with your long irons and you think you need more height and maybe you want to test some hybrids there’s no point going into fitting and not really knowing what you want so just have a few key points that you can discuss with your fitter maybe I want to hit it higher I hit it a bit too far to the right can you give me something that gets the ball mov moving a bit more to the left are you someone who’s a short hitter do you need more distance or actually do you need things raining in a little bit more and could we be looking at more for giving Club head the more information you can give the fitter the more accurate they can be with the clubs they’re giving you and the more you can get something that suited to your game is going to help you improve so when someone comes in and they maybe picking between the final few clubs how would you help them with that balance of like distance versus dispersion because a lot of people just want to go all out and pick up the club that goes the fervice but that’s not always the right decision yeah typically speaking you’re right the first thing you ask is what would you like to gain out of a new driver and the first thing that say is more distance which yes we all do want but we’ve got to be careful that we don’t get more distance and lose the dispersion cuz the further you hit it if you’re slightly offline you’re going to be even more offline so it’s fine in that balance I do feel a lot of the times if you do a really good fit you can get more yardage definitely a lot of the newer technology but you can use a lot of the other tools that you have with those drivers to adjust them fine cheun in them to get that dispersion tighter so you can most times get both but typically if you can’t and somebody’s at their Max you’ll then just work more on dispersion than overall distance so it’s just kind of understanding the balance between two so it’s really important to set a budget that you’re comfortable with before you go to a fitting because there’s no point getting fitted into the highend topof the range spec model if you just can’t afford to buy it now it’s really good to some come somewhere here like American Golf because there’s so many different options here it’s really easy for the fitter to find something that suits your budget so when you get there usually they’ll ask you but if not just let them know what your budget is on what you’re looking to spend before you go ahead and get fit so I would always recommend going somewhere of a fitting that has multiple brands on offer it just means you can try all different things and see what suits your getting every year manufacturers bring out new models and they might spin more or less have a different shot shape have a different height or a launch angle so actually it might be from year to year you would suit completely different brands so I think it’s always good to go somewhere and just test out everything because if you’re spending the money you might as well know which one’s going to suit you best some guys are brand conscious we all unfortunately uh we always try and tell the guys to be openminded though another brand here ri which is really entry level in that sense we do sell them as package sets so they are going to be a little more basic but say somebody doesn’t want a full set and they maybe just wanted to grab a single iron or they just wanted to get a drive and fairway wood and maybe a wedge just to sort of You Know cover those gaps and just get started we do have that option as well and what am I looking for now just some new subscribers it really helped the channel if you hit that subscribe button while you’re there you might as well like this video too what style of golf course you play at and where you play most of your golf is a really important thing to con consider before you go to a fit in if you’re someone who wants to hit the ball high and plays somewhere with loads of slopes you need to hit it up to rais Greens there’s no point getting driving irons that are going to go really low and have a piercing ball flight likewise the other way around if you play loads of lyx golf you don’t want just high flying golf shots so just think about where you play your golf what shots you need to hit the most and what clubs are going to help you play in those certain environments so I’ve just been hitting a very nice pink seven wood but I play on quite a windy golf horse I also play quite a lot of lyx golf when I travel how much do you like want people to tell you about where they play their Golf and how important is that to the F that’s a a very important question to ask because you know if they play somewhere where it’s very windy it’s not always the best option to hit the ball very very high so yeah I mean ideally if there’s something you know somebody wants to hit off the teer you know that might not be the best option you might want to look at something like a driving Lon that keep the ball lower it’ll get the ball up a little bit it’s not going to launch the same as say a seven would so you could always go down that line if somebody says listen yeah this is what I wanted for and you could go down a different route now regardless of what Club you decide to get fit for it’s worth thinking about how that fits into the overall makeup of your golf bag so if it’s you’re coming for irons are these going to be more stronger lofter do they go further do you suddenly need an extra wedging because of that at the other end of the spectrum if maybe you’re getting a hybrid or a driver or or fairy wood do you need another wood that’s going to fit the gaps right so it’s always worth knowing how far each Club in your bag currently goes and how far the new clubs go and then you can look and see if there’s any gaps there and just work out what you need to get the setup that flows seamlessly through the B so typically the ru of thumb is nothing less than four nothing more than six if you you know below four you find you’re hitting the clubs too close to each other anything after that sort of six Dee Mark you still have a gap but it’s a very very uh big part of the game that you need to make sure you get right otherwise you know this is the scoring part and if you don’t have that right you’re never really going to be on it are you and then at the other end of the bag how often do you think people maybe should be dropping more long isons and moving into like hybrid options instead because we see a lot of places where people can carry in two or three clubs that maybe just all go the same distance yeah now that’s another valid point hybrids are still very popular we do typically find you know the person that sort of hits down the ball hits hybrids very well and the guy that hits sort of more up doesn’t generally strike them as well so you know with seven wood something you can chuck in there as well very popular these days they are definitely come in you know more into the picture more guys are asking as well so yes dropping the long irons which are harder to hit and I mean The Lofts are strong these days which you know supplies of air to do because the shs have evolved and they get the ball you know launching so much easier so you know they’ve had to to strengthen it but you can drop the Longs and put a hybrid in there which is always beneficial as you know you can always M hit those and get away with it and I mean why wouldn’t you if you can M hit it and still get more out of it it’s a no-brainer isn’t it if toos are using seven wood and nine Woods you can probably give them a go one thing I would always advise when going to fit in is to be mindful of your normal shot ship so if you know you’re a slicer and suddenly you come and start hitting hooks or if you know you hook the ball you suddenly start hitting slicers don’t let your fitter fit you into something that’s going to make your bad shot worse so I know that generally my bad shot is to the left but a lot of the times that only comes out under pressure on the golf course actually in fitting sometimes I can block the ball a little bit and people want to kind of fit me into a draw bias model I know that’s not going to work for me under the gun so I’ll always advise them of that and say my bad Miss is left I don’t like seeing the ball go left and that will just help them adapt to that for me a shop that goes a little bit right I don’t mind at all I find it much more controllable and it doesn’t dip up off the golf course like that left shot does so before you go to a fit in it’s worth just getting a note down of that maybe even having some data I use shot SCS I can see where my shots are missing out on the golf course and just gives you more information to then give to your fitter and let them know what it is you’re looking for and what shots you’re trying to avoid now another thing you need to do when it comes to fittings is kind of leave your ego or any preconceptions at the door now it might be that these tailor M blads look incredible and they do and they feel amazing but for the most of us they’re just not going to be the most consistent or the easiest to hit Club so don’t go in with an idea of I need the most forgiving club or I need the blade really just be open to trying everything and seeing what the data shows you and actually which one’s best for you to hit because you could be really surprised this year I’ve been surprised at just how well I’ve hit some of the smaller clubs and in previous years I’ve been surprised just how well I’ve hit some of the most forgiven clubs so it’s not always the club that you think’s going to suit you is the one that’s the best I would say the same thing when it comes to shafts there’s so many great graphy options now that have really improved in quality and have really great stiffness to them so you can get something that’s light but also stiff and that just means you don’t have to go for a heavy steel and it should help your performance so really if you’re paying for new clubs and you’re paying for the fitting just be open to trying all the options and getting the thing that’s the best for you custom fittings are not just for good golfers and actually from most of my time been with Fitters they will tell me that the high handicaps are the people that get most out of the fitttings so if you’re a beginner new to the game or someone that doesn’t think that you strike it consistently enough to have a custom fitting that’s just not the case there’s so many things of fittings that can help even the most basic of golfers such as like your static height measurements your wrist of floor which can help with things like Li angle and the length of the shaft now getting these things right at the start of your golfing experience is really going to help you with your Technique and help you swing Freer so don’t be put off by thinking you’re not good enough to go for fit in that’s not the case at all you know everyone hits bad shots at a fit in I hit bad shots at a fit in and I play off bus to it’s not something to be embarrassed about think about this way if you’re out on the course and your friends hits a bad shot you don’t worry about that you just know it’s part of the game and it’s absolutely the same in the fitting your fitter is going to have seen thousands of people being nervous struggling hitting bad shots but they know how to get around that they know that’s going to happen and they expect you to warm up and hit some good ones later so don’t worry about not being good enough to go it’s going to help your game long term so it’s really worth doing you do get the guys that on you that have the perception of fitting is not for me however it doesn’t matter whether you’re a beginner golfer whether you’re a better golfer it’s always going to benefit you you know just from getting the correct length to the correct line and the correct shaft and I think it’s more imperative that the beginner gets fitted properly because we also get asked the question should I go for lessons first yeah and get my swing dialed into to where it needs to be before I do a fitting but the problem with that is if you building a swing around equipment that’s not correct for you you’re going to develop loads of Swing faults just because of and we see it time and time again where a guy comes and he’s doing certain things in the swing and you know that’s crep in just purely because the club’s too short or it’s too heavy or he’s got the wrong head wrong L angle so there’s just certain things that I would say just get the club right and then go for the lessons and everything will look after itself

The best thing i ever did for my game as i got older, was take clubs out.
Driver 11.5°, 5 wood, 23° hybrid, 7 and 9 iron, 50 and 56° wedge and of course a putter.
🙏 great video information Hannah cheers
You can always buy a suit off the rack, but if you want it to fit correctly you go to a tailor. Same thing applies to golf clubs too… ⛳🏌
I know Hannah is trying to help out with this video but honestly, unless you know a fitter you can actually trust it is not worth it. A good golf swing works with any club as long as you use roughly the right stiffness/shaft. I would say as long as you are not of Single digit or better forget the fitting and go for lessons. A good golf coach can even give you recommendations on what to get based on your skill/swing.
Fitting is very important, but don’t go to American Golf, they are clueless. Maybe this one guy is ok, but everywhere it’s just an average shop assistant with a little knowledge fitting you. Ask them about swing weight for instance. Blank faces. I needed a replacement grip 50gm. I was given a mid size 60gm. Fitter said, ‘10 gms! Won’t make any difference!’ Clueless. I really like your channel Hannah, but don’t sell out to AG, not classy enough for you.
Tell the fitter I say hello from South Africa 🇿🇦
American golf do not have enough choice of shafts and no premium ones.
Is American Golf a good place to have a fitting??.
Very interesting. Thank you. 😊😊😊
Sounds like there have been a few … less than good experiences with club fittings. If you find yourself in OKC, you should check out Ball Golf. I had a great experience (fall 2021) and love my clubs (G425s).
Hannah, when are you going to do another video with Jack Backhouse? I rewatch your "break 80" video every once in a while. I like the course management videos you've posted.
Just DON'T go to American Golf in Chester. Useless, waste of my time!
Didn't show me any numbers, told me to go and get lessons! (Was a 15 handicap at the time, now a 12)
Ego: 100% ! I have played golf since 1997, and I have seen SO many guys that want "tour blades"… they need to "shape their shots" and stuff like that … and yes; they really shaps theirs shots (slice or hook)…. I think that 90% of the guys I have met (in this category) would be scoring lower with more forgiving clubs… if not more….
I was at a fitting not long ago; and he asked me what I was thinking regarding "type" of clubs and shafts: And I just said: I don't care: what ever is best for me…. and he said "thank goodness…", and we had a chat about, espessially guys", that came in and "know" before the fitting that they HAVE TO HAVE xtra stiff shafts (or whatever), and it is a struggel when they actually have a regular swing.
I love your content, however what is the point of being fitted for clubs using a ball that you don’t normally use, surely you will get false results.
At my fitter, I always use the ball I play with (AD333) which gives me good feedback because I know my distances. If I was fitted using a Prov1 or similar then what good is that data, because I can’t afford to pay £40-50 a dozen for premium balls. Plus my fitter is independent and has all the brands to test.
excellent content found it very interesting the various ball comparisons
Went for fitting at American Golf. Rubbish. Dint check my height, or hand size. I’m short with small hands. Don’t check existing length of my clubs. They are short. Dint listen to my budget. I wanted an iron set and drive for max £1000. He was saying the starting price would be £1400. Was a complete waste of all our time
He says “guys” while talking to a woman.
Loving your subscribers cut aways 😂😂😂
Hi Hannah…lots to think about from this video…I was lucky to have a fitting at Scottsdale Golf and to their credit the fitter did ask me most of the topics you mention. I have ended up with a blended bag of clubs from different manufacturers..
great video
Fitting makes sense, IF you have a consistent and repeatable swing that yields the required distance and accuracy. It is a waste of money, if you aren’t. Learn from a coach and practice, practice and practice! It is a very difficult sport.
Why would anyone go to AG for a fitting? They will fit you to whatever gets them the best commission.
Go to a good golf pro for your fitting. Failing that go to somewhere that charges a fee but isn't working on commission.
Worst possible place for a golf fitting 😂
I never see any left handed clubs. So I struggle to get a fitting. Withe such a limited amount and choice.
As a YouTuber you get to work with the best custom fitters. I paid $200 for a driver fitting when he did a crappy job. In the end, complained that I didn’t buy anything.
Great advice Hannah, I’ve forwarded this to a mate who’s going for a fitting but definitely needs to park his ego and his brand loyalty 😅
My family encouraged me to update my 25 y.o. irons and I went for a fitting. The data from my session narrowed it down to TM P790 or 225s. Based on the dispersion pattern, went with the 225. Then knowing I couldn't blame the equipment, I went for lessons. Recently I switched balls from pro v1 to TP5s which also gained me yardage and dispersion. It's so interesting this video touched on everything that is part of my equipment journey
Great video 👍🏼
I signed up for a $29 “fitting” at Dicks Sporting goods really to find out the basics about my swing speed, which was a measly 85mph. Being of very average size for my age and gender, I determined a 10.5 degree regular shaft driver was the proper fit for low money. Now, off to get lessons.
Fitting is expensive. However, if you go to PXG , you will pay far less as they don’t charge for a fitting if you buy clubs. Also, if you choose upgrade shafts, you will only pay for the shaft. Others will charge full price of off the rack club plus fitting, plus upgrade shaft, plus installation.
American Golf…. In the UK!?
I had a fitting at American Golf around 4 yers ago, nice chap, but not very comprehensive, at little disappointing.
I passed on the fitting, a dynamic fitting until I get more consistent. So far my “gut” has been good. I have gotten a few informal lessons and may get a dynamic fitting at some point.
I have done a static fitting. I got the same place on my own as the pro did.
I recently made a move to a senior flex shaft. Then been out of golf for quite a while now. I will feel like a beginner when I get back in the game regularly.
Unfortunately, many businesses are a simply disguised sales pitch. I went to one that was only $50.00 and his analysis was that only the most expensive clubs would work for me. He did not even check lie angle or measure any of me. He assumed that my old clubs from nearly 20 years prior were fit right. I never saw swing speed, dispersion, contact info. I have watched several fitting videos including one of yours where the fitter actually got to know you and your swing. I lost my trust of the system.
PS. They were not working for me on the simulator, so I couldn’t figure out how he decided what might work for me.
I now think money spent on a specific lesson is a far better investment in lowering one’s handicap. In short, it’s probably not the clubs and will the promise of 5 more yards really lower your handicap? I doubt it.
I had 3 fittings in 2025 for a new driver & none of them could improve on my 15 yr old Callaway 460.
i did it & hated it, get what you like an practice if you have the time unless you ask them to fit you to brands you like😅
I use a driver, 3 wood, 7 wood, 25° hybrid, then I start at 6 iron and go from there. I’m heading to get fitted for my driver to see if a shorter shaft might help. I could care less about distance I just need to tighten dispersion.
I’d never use American Golf. Pure hard sell. I was in a bay just down from a guy getting fitted for irons. You could hear the thud (mat) then the click (ball) on every shot. The fitter, about 20 years old, was saying “Great shot!” after every strike. On grass, the ball would have been fatted every time!
Good points on all else but the "buy great golf balls" part which is absolute garbage. Years of test data out there on used balls vs new, pricier balls. The difference only 3-5 yards.
American Golf is a shambles. The first kid I spoke to in the testing bay tried to tell me that blue dot was the standard lie angle for Ping irons which simply isn’t true and then they had Ping send me undersize Golf Pride grips with +1 extra layer of tape which I didn’t even ask for. They never took my measurements or bothered to try me out with different colour codes and just went on what my previous Ping irons were. Fitting my arse. Avoid these clowns
You absolutely need to reach a level of consistency in your swing to attain benefit from a fitting.
Until then, stick to your original clubs.
Love you videos!!!
Keep them coming!!!
Yeah No / he`s been to OZ.
It's funny. I'd never heard the myths at the beginning, but watching this, I find that they're all true for me. I'm obviously not a good enough golfer to understand most of this vid let alone get fitted. No clue what a shot shape is, how to answer where I play most of my golf, don't know what a "links course" is, don't hit constantly enough to say for certain what distance I get out of each club, didn't even know there was a "softer" ball.
american golf don’t consider swing weight in your fitting. I had an issue with my custom fit at American Golf. Got my club pro to check them out.C1 instead of D2 . Shop weren’t interested because they don’t have the facility to measure or correct but after email to area manager they sent them to club fitter who confirmed they were way off. Waiting for Taylor made to correct and return. (Seem to be taking their own sweet time tbh)
Difficult to know where to go for a really good fitting. Local club pro’s might only have 2 brands to compare . Tough decisions.
