Great iron play comes from compression — ball first, turf second. Understanding how we should think about an iron is crucial. In this lesson, we break down the backswing and impact keys to help you strike your irons more solid and consistent.
Now, if we draw our back swing line in here, we obviously don’t want to see that there’s a sway or a shift over to the right. We want to make sure that we turn and and work pretty much against this line here. It’s okay if we come away from the line a small amount, but we certainly don’t want to be reverse pivoting too much over here. So, a nice centered pivot with the iron is good. This is the most important thing now when it comes to ball striking with the irons. From the top of the back swing, we have the impact line in. I want to make sure now that we can get to this impact line as early as possible. The best players in the world, the best ball strikers in the world will be against this impact line by the time the lead arm is parallel to the ground. A lot of amateur golfers who struggle with hitting the ground first or even thinning the ball, they get there too late, so they’ll start their down swing and they’re too much behind this line. There’s daylight here and therefore now they haven’t got forward enough to get the divot past the golf ball. We have to make sure we can get to this lead side. So at impact there’s zero daylight between my body and that impact line.
