Most swing problems are caused by having a bad backswing. In the fourth Paddy’s Golf Tips video of a new series on how you can learn to teach yourself, I cover the various aspects of the backswing, from the takeaway, the role of the hip and shoulder turns, and the transition to the beginning of the downswing. Furthermore, I cover the benefit of short practice swings and the reason behind movement of the head.

  1. There are not many people I would listen to about golf ….

    Especially coaching golf
( I am a coach of over 40 years around the world )

But I listen to Mr Harrington!!

    Need I say more !

  2. Thanks padraig always great tips, could you do a vid on set up which could be consistency achieved, coaches talk about hip bump at set up ?

  3. Thanks! I love the feeling of keeping the club lower for longer on the backswing like Tommy Fleetwood. Forces you to be nice an relaxed in the knees.

  4. Thanks Padraig. How would you recommend to tackle excessive cupping in the backswing. Is it a grip issue (too strong?) or is there a fix you’d recommend?

  5. A lot of people on YouTube you probably should NOT listen to. But Harrington is seriously a legend. Every syllable out of his mouth is pure gold for us amateurs. Period. Cherish this

  6. Paddy, what’s your thoughts on being laid off, I suffer with heel strikes and been told it’s due to being abit laid off?

  7. You teaching vídeos helped me enormously. They are the best. Pure and simple and a great wisdom behind. A suggestion for a next one: how to keep left arm straight in the backswing.

  8. Thanks for the lesson, Padraig. I'm going to try the left heel drop to initiate my swing and weight shift. Seems like less to think about than the other ways of starting the downswing, which I have trouble with, like bumping the hip to the left, stepping onto the ball of the left foot, etc.

  9. Your sequence could be a real “light bulb” moment. I had always believed that the hip turn was part of the one-piece takeaway. To see you get your lead arm to parallel and then use your hips to complete the backswing is a complete revelation. Can’t wait to try it out tomorrow evening on a practice 9 holes. Thank you kind sir. Your insights are simply amazing. 🙏🏻

  10. Here's a tip for YOU, Paddy. That bad knee might not be from your knee. When we lose mobility in our hip, additional pressure is put on the knee. I'm talking from experiece but your physical therapist will know.

  11. Padraig, could you give your thoughts on "Stack and Tilt" swing theory? Would like to hear what you think about it for weekend golfers, not elite players.

I've been experimenting with it as an older player 50+, it's given me a framework to find a consistent swing and ball stike. It's not the prettiest swing but it's consistent.

  12. Thank you for these videos Mr Harrington. Really helping an amateur golfer improve his fairly bad handicap. Could you please do the downswing next?

  13. Thank you for putting these together it really makes a difference as we learn to play the game we love.

  14. There is a saying, "those that cant play teach" Padraigs content allows simple playable thoughts…..it not all parts and pieces…its a sequence…his info is good for tour players to beginners….

  15. Great videos as ever, it is almost like you know a thing or two about golf….

Suggestion, as well as a single summary video of recent tips, please do one on things we shouldn't do, got to be loads and if i can eliminate one or two errors it would do wonders for my game (rather than trying to perfect the perfect swing which might not be relevant to my shot type). Thanks man.

  16. The absolute most useful lesson for me since I've been following the legendary Mr. Harrington. Looks simple but packed with minute details. Thank you for your service to recreational players like us.

  17. At no point in the demo of the beginning of the downswing has he released the cup in his left wrist. The timing of turning down the wrist is the single hardest component for amateurs. What he calls a flat wrist is just wrong.

  18. Really liked this one. Could you talk about set up distance to the ball with different clubs and different sceneries (including bunkers especially greenside bunkers)

  19. How do I get an email reply from your website Pardraig. I've written 4 so far without any reply. Is there a problem with your website? Thanks

  20. Resist ur hip turn was rubbish I grew up with. Finish the backswing with a full hip turn – that’s music to my ears. That’s the difference between powerful effort and effortless power. Thank you Paddy 🥂⛳️

  21. Wow, thanks Paddy! I’ve not seen this before!! Looking forward to the downswing from this backswing position.

    Fairways and greens to you!

  22. I’m a 30 year old man who is constantly working on golf for the past year. Just looked at a still from my last practice and compared the rotation to you Paddy, and my goodness you can rotate! Gonna keep working! Thanks for being an inspiration!

  23. This is great instruction. Thank you very much by Padraig. Some instruction on the hybrid or fairway woods would be great.

  24. If you could talk about a practice to finish the through swing with the weight fully transferred to the left toes , how does the right hip turn towards the target? Thank you
