Remember 1,2,3 in grading your shots! I think it’s great!
Matt very boring
Keep going Matt. Love the content. 👍
Great series Matt, love seeing the learnings go into play.
Need to stop hitting your clubs into the course after a bad shot, respect the course and it’ll respect you back.
Mr. Fryer. Have been subscribed since you started in your Incredible Hulk days. After seeing what you Brits did to Turnberry, I’m done with British golf. No respect for the game or its history. Unsubscribed.
I'm enjoying this series very much. Your driving this time was impressive, and in general that 1, 2, 3 system enabled you to keep your emotions in check despite setbacks. I think you need to apply that to your putting, too – you were obviously frustrated with the results of some putts, but if you hit the putt where you wanted to and it missed because of an unforeseen deflection or rough bit of green then take it as a 1 and move on.
Keep going Matt Quality content mate loving it, thank you
Love your content but what I'm hearing is basically just a bunch of excuses, if this or if that, shoulda could woulda. When you play golf you have to be in the mindset of ok that was a bad shot and move on. I play with guy that as soon as he hits one bad shot he lets it ruin the rest of the whole round. Can't beat yourself up all day and play good golf. Some days your gonna play great or good and then there are gonna be those horrible days and all in between. Start to play to enjoy the game and the company and let be what it is. I'm an 8 handicapper, best round ever 68 and that's probably the best ill ever be but I love the game. I want to be better but I'm happy playing if I never break par again. Good luck to you Matt
Horrid. Haven't watched it all, so don't know the outcome, but Hole 10 reveals your main problem: You don't respect the game of golf. And ye should be punished for it. You need a coach who will tell it to you like it is; not the ones you've got, mate. Your disrespect is well deserved.
Great video, the 123 strategy is working. Better greens and straighter irons and you'll be cooking. Love the commentary and honestly, keep it real, no hype.
I'm suffering from wild hooks that randomly pop up, could be my hip release or in-to-out strike. I'm ramping up so just driving range and gym work, so not too worried about bad strikes. I'll try that split hand drill, can see it would help stabilise the clubhead at impact.
Have watched lots of your videos over the years and generally enjoy your content, but this isn’t the one. I really don’t have time to watch half an hour of excuse making and you blaming everything but your poor golf.
Some key takeaways from your takeaways;
3rd hole – you decided to hit 4 iron off the tee and hit a terrible tee shot. You hit a poor 2nd shot. You fluff a chip. You then decide to blame the lack of growth for a poor chip and the reason for your bogey. Tee shot and 2nd shot caused the bogey.
On the 5th hole your excuse for a poor putt was the pace of play, ridiculous excuse. Stop talking about controlling outcomes and just own your crap shots. Also, please say “holed it” and not “held it” because held it isn’t a thing.
Stop blaming the greens for you hitting poor short putts. The whole field are putting on the same greens.
You blamed a mud ball and a poor lie on the 9th for another duffed chip where you completely decelerated.
You blamed the green for a missed short putt (for par) on 10 and then blamed an air mark for missing the short putt for bogey. Blame yourself, and nothing else. You hit two crap putts.
On 11 you blame the crap tee shot on “not being bothered”.
On 14 you blame the crap tee shot on being daunted on the tee, but also say it’s because you chose the wrong shot and because you left the face open. The 2nd shot on 14 you bemoan a crap lie, when it’s in the rough off a poor tee shot and is actually sitting great. You then get handsy with the 2nd shot and duff it into a tree, blaming everything but poor execution. On the 14th green you then blame your mind going because the round had taken 4 hours. You also blame it being cold. That’s about 8 excuses on the one hole, which is some going.
Another duffed chip on 15, blamed on not “taking notice” of it.
To top it off you didn’t even remove your hat to shake hands.
This is by far the worst video I’ve seen you put out in some time. Stop making excuses. Play better.
Your game isn’t in a place where you can compete at this level, certainly not yet.
You aren’t tournament ready
WHS allows PGA pros to play in club medals. Get your handicap, which is probably around 2 or 3 and play some normal medals at a club.
Learn how to play competitively again.
I just don’t have time to watch 30 mins of poor excuses for your really poor golf.
Do better.
You’re capable.
As a beginner, this series is gold! Watching you go through the process—working on your game, dealing with setbacks, and still finding the passion—is exactly what makes golf so special. It’s awesome to see you reconnect with why you fell in love with the game in the first place. I’ve read so many stories about how the better players get, the harder they are on themselves, and they end up hating it. This series is a reminder to enjoy the journey, not just the score. Keep going, Matt—this is inspiring stuff! ⛳🔥
Under armour gear is better than mizuno.
Let's blame everything apart from yourself.
You'll get nowhere if you continue to think you're better than you are. Accept your game and play to it. You might even come in the top 3 some day.
You made an interesting comment about the mentality of trying to win the comp but how i see it is that your learning a new mindset with dealing with your thoughts and emotions of each individual shot and also on top of that your managing a new driver swing. To then add an all out attack to win the comp at this stage could be too much. I would see these winter comps almost like pre season friendlies where the outcome doesn’t matter it’s applying these new skills into a comp and once that becomes more natural then you can attack comps. I don’t know just a thought
I believe in you. Keep your head up and you are heading in the right direction.
Love the series Matt. Honest documentary.
The title puts me off watching this
Matt, another mental way to play, is to break down the round to 3 hole challenges. So, at your level, go for -1 for three holes. If you can do that , you'll shoot 6 under. But even if you don't maybe you shoot 3 under. Which is still a good score. The other benefit is, say you shoot 2 over for three holes, then you have a reset for the next three holes. It's helped me lower my handicap from 11 to 6. You won't shoot 5 over if you give it a try. 👍
I always think of mind sets as 2 voices in you're head and they will pull you in opposite directions. While ever you remain positive the new mind set voice is there to root for you and pull you up, however, as soon as there is the slightest negative thought the old mind set voice is sat there ready to jump in like a rat down a drain pipe and pull you lower to their level. Stay positive and positive things mostly happen! good luck with the My first win series
Hilarious good on you for putting yourself to the test
If I could shoot 5 over after playing “poorly” I’d be making my own video. Keep working on the mental aspect and the rest will come
So as your mental coach said, you basically had 1 pattern of left and if the chipping and putting was better you'd have probably been level par. The driver swing looks less wafty too! I take this round as a win!! 😄
(Writing after 13th) I’m a mental/sports psych coach and in my opinion your mental pathway reliance is low currently, but that’s because as Carl said on your video, there’s not enough tournament material to have a pattern yet. Biggest thing I’d say is that the short putts you’re trying not to miss, whereas in content videos you’re intending to make them. Tee shots, overall was improved with more 1s & 2s.
Just need to keep reinforcing methods you’re using to get enough tournament material to create patterns.
More than happy to do mental pathway/habitual coaching with you as that’s my speciality.
Take my hat off to you Matt , dogged determination and spine and I believe you will emerge from this as a far better player and I’m sure you’ll achieve your goal.
C'mon Matt keep that positivity up,you got the shots in the bag, trust the Process you will get there 🙏
You are just like most of us , too hard on yourself. Love the content and keeping it real. I thank you ❤
Loving you videos!!! Keep up the content the win will come. Are you doing qualifying again? You should!
Lots of great shots. Keep it going, you'll get there.
Ex-Chorley now in Kent (at Danny Maude's club). The mindset lesson was so good I'd like to see each shot marked 1 to 3. Including the putts. Also can you please not do a Steve Ryder and describe the shot outcome before its shown – reduces the jeopardy. Have binned Rick and Golfmates – its you (love Carter cameos), Finch and Bryans as there is no LIV brown-nosing!
Too many pga tour pros in these comments. Top content!
Kudos for the effort and determination. It shows true commitment to upload your less favorable rounds for us to learn.
I’m playing my first tournament on a 72 par course next week and I’ll be using the 1-2-3 shot rating system to try and enjoy the experience and not let me being a newbie ruin the day for me.
PS: lose the misleading dramatic covers for the videos. Cheers from Spain and keep up the great content. I’m grateful
Your comments on 12 and onwards –
if only…
I just need to..
that's the only score I can shoot at the moment…
I think you should look at the Karl video again, you didn't really change your attitude at all irl and keep telling yourself the same story as always.
Good to see that you're just the same as the rest of us 😂
I very much enjoy your videos. I've never commented before because I usually watch on my TV, but after watching your last couple of videos, I felt compelled to get to the computer and comment. The lesson you had with Carl was pure gold. Years ago I was a +1 HDCP and I have always been really hard on myself, which no doubt limited myself from playing to my ability. I just couldn't let bad shots go and I was very score oriented – like you said you have been. That's one of the reasons I have so enjoyed your content as I see so much of myself in you though I'm a much older American. Today, I played my first round since watching your last couple of videos and I employed Carl's process of labeling each shot a 1, 2, or 3. I hit several 2's that in the past would have gotten me extremely angry with myself and probably destroyed the round as I would have hit several 3's due to being so upset and losing concentration/interest. Not one of the 2's turned out to be particularly poor and all of them were serviceable shots. The result of the round is that I had nothing but 1's and 2's and didn't have a single 3 and I never got upset at myself a single time. I want to thank you and Carl for that video as I believe it is the best "lesson" I have ever had. I wish I could have adopted that mindset many years ago. Thanks again for all your content and I will continue to be watching and enjoying.
The lesson with Karl was wonderful to watch, and I will be applying that lesson to my own game for sure. Thank you for that. As someone who is quick to be self degrading myself, the question "do you do that to show those around you that you're better than that" hit me hard. Whether trying to protect the ego, or trying to self motivate through negative reinforcement the damage to your mindset is the same. It reminded me of one of Jordan Petersons 12 rules for life. "Treat yourself like you are someone you're responsible for taking care of."
You remind me of a horse I used to back years ago matt, many a horse BTW, hoping it gets there but it never did.. Why?.. Because I backed the wrong one.. Same as golf.. Wrong choice shot.. I like many more loved the 123 .. Trying to remember the 3..I'll watch it again.. Calm down and trust yourself.. Stop being aware of us watching.. I honestly think that you need to start enjoying your golf and talent and let loose.. Go easy and enjoy.. Stop making excuses for us, be you
Love your Channel Mat. Here is a tip though that all you youtube golfers can use. Don`t put the microphone on your clothes, specially when they are not from a soft material. You and Rick Shields are the two noisiest. It’s quite annoying tho listen to it in every swing. Can’t you put it on the hat or something?
I would take 5 over all day….every day!!! Don’t beat yourself up Matt. You can do this!! I’m a 12 handicap and 5 over is like shooting a 69 for me
Your new equanimity is so refreshing. And apart from helping you play better, as a bonus, it makes your videos much more enjoyable to watch.
Love the attitude Matt. I know this plus the improved driving and short game will translate to better scores.
you mentioned being fatigued ….r u looking into diet / snack options on course ? as especially when getting older you need to keep the old engine fueled up properly to sustain optimum output …just something to think about and only mention as i dont think ive ever seen you snacking or eating / drinking anything in a video ever …so maybe you do but just incase as you want to be as good an athlete as you can it requires the best input and timed input of fuel 🙂
Hi Matt – we were 2 groups behind you and as you said this round was over 5 hours!! Pace of play needs to be addressed – it's really frustrating when your waiting on every tee and fairway. Why are the Pro's so slow??? or would you blame am's?
Watch john Daley and Bryson Video. Bryson kept talking about breaking 50 Daley wouldnt have it , "next hole only, then what will be will be"
Keep grinding Matt stay positive and things will begin to fall into place with your game.
Hold your head up Matt. It is the beginning of the season. Us beginners like to see you as a pro struggle as well. Of course we wish you all the best rounds you can shoot, but there is only one Scottie Scheffler…😉😁. Greetings from 🇨🇭 (bring back your magic putting stick from last year: the best putter on YT 💪🏻)
