Hogan utilized hip slide AND rotation to create a powerful swing. You need to do the same.

The downswing is a combination of lateral and rotation. It is not 100% rotation as often stated.

PS – some nice shots of Hogan’s weight forward too. Something less talked about.

there’s even some images of Hogan you see when he gets to the top he looks really lowed then you see this and it looks like he’s rotating it looks like all he’s doing is turning but if we take a closer look and you were to watch his real swing so he’s feeling this if you to watch his swing you’ll see that he bust those hips through the wall

  1. Thanks for helping me through a swing change this season, Tom! Have been passing it on to my buddies as well. The best instructor in the game!

  2. Absolutely. And, an excellent point. But, I honestly think he is having a giraffe. He has to know that the hands can't release thru from that position. And, when he does release his thru, with his hands, he puts a hold on the "inside muscles", in his right leg, in the transition. Interesting, also, that he motions with his right hand and arm, when he tells us to watch for how he starts down. And, I would suggest that his downswing is "inaugurated" by his hands and arms. If not, why is it that his hands blur out, in the transition, in slow mo vids. Simple fact is that he pressed his left hand towards his right hand, in the transition, whilst pressing down with the left side of his head.

  3. To understand Hogan’s swing and hip action study how he moved his trail foot frame-by-frame relative to where his hands and club head are in 3D space. Note how he lifted the trail foot to heel-to-toe progressively and delays going up on the toe and turning. Try it and you’ll realize how much lifting the back foot affects resistance in the turning of the hips and how that affects the club head whipping down around the hands, where most of the club head acceleration is generated.

It’s basic Newtonian physics. First speed up the lead arm and hands that is dragging the club down via the hip turn then as the club shaft reaches horizontal slow down the hip turn and hands to trigger the club head mass to react by whipping down and forward around the hands. Add a bit if waggle down action into ulnar deviation in the last few inches before impact to add another burst of acceleration through impact and square the face and you’ll be swinging like Hogan did.
