How you grip the golf club directly affects your wrist angles and club face angle.

In other words, where your wrists are positioned at the top of the backswing, during the downswing or at the moment of impact will be determined by your grip at address.

In this golf lesson, PGA pro Kerrod Gray and Chris Mayson explain how grip affects your wrists in the golf swing. Then demonstrate how to improve your wrist conditions by simply focusing on your grip to get the club face square at impact.

are you trying to get a flat left wrist
at the top of your golf swing well you
might want to think again because if
your grip doesn’t complement this
position it can lead to terrible golf
shots so in this video you’ll learn
exactly when and how you should work on
your wrist angles so you can flush those
golf shots let’s get stuck
in so Chris we’re going to talk about
function over form yeah and one of the
most common elements of the swing that I
find play Spinning way too long trying
to manipulate is their wrist angles at
the top of the golf swing but a lot of
the time that might actually be helping
them hit better golf shots right yeah
you’re absolutely right it’s very
important that you find a coach that
fixes the ball flight first so the only
reason that you would end up changing a
risk condition is if the grip isn’t
matching up to that risk condition um if
youve got a functional flight but you
don’t like the way your golf swing looks
I wouldn’t change anything and if you go
into a coach that’s trying to change it
I would run away but what you’re trying
to do is essentially match the rest with
your grip so if you’ve got a stronger
grip so for a right-handed player the
left hand you in three or four Knuckles
mhm you’re going to need some extension
or cup at the top in order to get that
club face Square y right if you’ve got a
weak grip so with maybe one or two
Knuckles on the left hand like a John
Ram or something you are going to need
to bow or Flex that lead rest in order
to get that face square if your grip is
neutral say 2 and 1 half 3 Knuckles
you’re going to need just a little bit
of car or extension into that left wrist
to match it up and get get the face
Square on the down swing in order for
you to be most efficient through the
ball yeah now Chris you work with a
bucket load of tour players and everyone
would tend to look into a blaz and go
it’s a beautiful aesthetic swing even
players who have gone their whole lives
and really at the end of the day they
only care about the score they can get
too wound up on the look of their golf
swing especially with social media and
YouTube and everything in between of
trying to achieve this look for ego
purposes exactly right rather than the
function of it which is to hit better
golf shots yes I myself have played with
a cup left wrist my whole life and for
relative to my expectations I’m quite
happy and as soon as I do try and make
it look pretty I can’t really then hit
the shots that I would like on the 18th
hole under pressure because I’m focusing
too much on something that doesn’t
really match up with the one thing that
matters which is the contact with the
ball yes y you’re exactly right and and
a lot of times I see players trying to
change their wrist structure when the
wrist structure is much harder to change
than necess than say the grip right it’s
so much easier to change your grip to
match your wrist structure than it is to
change your wrist structure around your
grip so personally if you’re going to do
something that’s much easier I would
change the grip to get the face Square
not necessarily change the wrist
condition to get the face Square yeah
that is great advice so we’re going to
talk specifically about one of your
players Chris right and they tend to
have quite a strong grip so as I put my
hands on the golf club you can see the
logo of my Cobra glove here is pointing
directly towards this camera now if I
take this golf club to the top what I
want you to do is come around behind me
Chris and kind of show what this player
was trying to do but in fact where they
should be so as I take this back let’s
say I’m working on getting a nice flat
wrist what’s the problem at the top of
this swing so the issue there is you got
to kind of flex a neutral wrist but
because the grip’s so strong the face is
now very very shut almost like a Dustin
Johnson now if you’re as flexible as DJ
and can start rotating really really
really really hard to keep that face
Square then that’s awesome but most
people aren’t as athletic as DJ is
correct they’re going to hit it around
their left ankled into our carts exactly
right so if you’ve got a strong grip
take your setup you need that first move
to stay a little bit more outside the
hands in order to keep that left wrist
into that extension piece so then as you
move to the top the the face can stay
Square in relation to your grip and the
match up that your wrist has there yeah
and players will then go well at impact
I see everyone with the handle forward
guys there’s a few ways to get the job
done and one of those as you come into
impact Chris would be the uh down
hinging or uncocking of the wrists right
you can see that as I do that the handle
might be a little bit higher for this
player yes but as they come through you
can see I don’t need to be nearly as
rotated and I still get the handle for
it and I got a flat left shist all the
good stuff yeah and and you know if
you’re an amateur I would definitely
move towards a strong grip than a weak
grip because most weak grip players are
actually going to throw it to square the
face they’re not going to flex the left
wrist like a tour player would like a
mararo or a spe right yeah so I would
highly recommend if you’re especially if
you’re a kid or a junior if you’re a
beginner get the grip a little stronger
that’s going to encourage you to hit it
much harder and get that handle more
forward yeah and with all the players
that we’ve ever taught we can pretty
much identify what ball flight they will
be hitting or their patterns purely from
their setup yes we’re going to see the
player who tends to have a stronger grip
probably have the handle forward
generally the ball a little bit further
back through their subconscious reaction
to that they’re going to tend to hit
like push draws or block hooks yes but
there is way more people on the other
side of the spectrum where they would be
ball Forge weaker grip and they’re
hitting it left and all they want to do
is a draw and then they start getting to
the top and they start adjusting their
wrist angles with their ball positions
too far forward now they’ve got a huge
two-way Miss exactly right yeah and it’s
very very important that
you understanding the ball flight and
then matching it to your Club face which
obviously is your wrist and your grip
match up and then how you’re coming down
into the ball in order to create the
shot that you want yeah perfect putting
that all together right I am purposely
going to have a stronger grip in this
position I’m going to put it across
where it feels significantly more than
what I’m used to accommodate that with
the handle being a little bit more
forward I’m going to work on what Chris
said here of making sure that my club
face in space is matching up with that
I’m let’s see how this ball comes off
you know what boy that even baade it
didn’t even it didn’t hook around my
left ankle and I had a cup WR right so
and there’s a couple of checkpoints that
people can can can take too like if
you’re really into seeing your video
right if the grip is strong right can
you get it back here and keep that club
face neutral which would be neutral to
your Spain as you’re moving to the top
is the club face square and most
importantly as you’re moving back down
is the club feet square and moving
through the strike the way you want yeah
perfect so great little checkpoints
there as you take the golf club back
into the first parallel when that club
face matching our spine angle as such is
good to sometimes exaggerate if you feel
like you’re on the opposite end of that
Spectrum but most importantly Club shaft
parallel in the downswing make sure
that’s matching your spine angle as much
as you can blend that together all in
one so if you’re focusing a little bit
too much on your wrist angles you’re
struggling with your ball flight just
maybe check your grip and see what
matches up the most you heard it from
Chris Mason here use this advice and
help shoot lower scores

  1. Neutral to weak. My old instructor told me to have a strong grip and I never listened tbh. I'm deffo gonna try again now understanding the outcome πŸ‘
