all right we’ll get started we’d like to
welcome 2023 Open championship winner
Brian Haron into the interview room here
at the RBC Heritage uh Brian this is the
20-y year anniversary of your PJ tour
debut at the 2004 RBC Heritage looking
back at that week does it feel like it’s
been 20 years yeah it feels uh feels
like a lifetime ago um I was I think 16
or 17 years old
so yeah so feels like a long time ago
what kind of memories do you have coming
back to this tournament every year as I
mentioned um to you you’ve made the
second most starts of any player in the
field how does it feel to be back here
especially as a as a major Champion for
the first time yeah this is one of my
absolute favorite stops all year um
state of South Carolina I’m so happy
that they’ve got such a good field this
is such a great event and um they’ve
always supported this event even when it
got a little dicey there uh I don’t know
seven eight years ago we were afraid
we’re going to lose this tournament I’m
so glad that it’s still here and kind of
made it through and and they’ve got a
great fiing great weather it’s going to
be a fantastic event all right we’ll
take some questions out here if you have
a question we’ll get a microphone to you
we’ll start over there with
Amy good morning Amy from wjcl ABC
Savannah always seems like you have a
good following here being a local guy so
entering this tournament how special is
it to always come back getting to play
basically in your home backyard and also
do you have any local friends or family
that you plan on seeing this week yeah
we always entertain a pretty big crowd
uh this week my parents my in-laws a
bunch of friends from Savannah uh they
always come out and support which is
fantastic this is the first tournament
that I attended as a spectator uh first
PJ Tour event that I played um as an
Amer and yes so for me this is a this is
an incredible spot I love the golf
course um and like I said it’s it’s
always really really comforting to be
back here we go to Adam back right got
to ask what happened at the Masters and
when’s the last time you shot 47 oh man
40 was 40 yeah 47 you’re right I thought
it was 46 um you know I I had I didn’t
have my best stuff I I played at Valero
and was feeling pretty good um and went
in there and my prep wasn’t that great I
got off to a good start which I haven’t
really done and the condition just got
the better of me I I I hit a I hit a
wedge shot into the water on 13 which is
the hole that I restarted on and I just
lost my I just lost my patience um you
know I’ve been pretty good at being able
to kind of you know dial myself you know
bring myself back to the to the moment
and I just yeah I I made that mistake
and then I hit it in the water on 16 and
you know both both shots I felt like I
executed pretty good if you could you
know let me move my ball three feet I I
probably would have made two birdies
instead of you know a double and a
triple and once I got behind it you the
wind’s blowing it’s just it’s such a
hard Golf Course um you know I was I was
proud of the way that I hung in there
you know without really you know i’ i’
wasted the golf tournament but I was
proud of the way that I hung in there
Friday afternoon and shot a decent score
uh even after um you know I wasn’t going
to make the cut so what happened I I
lost patience and made some bad golf
swings and and they add up quick over
there going back to that first time you
played here on the sponsor invite did
you write a letter do you remember what
that was like getting finding out that
you were getting in the tournament yeah
I can remember uh uh Steve Wilmont
called me I was at I was at
home uh obviously still live with my
parents I was
16 uh yeah I got the call was was super
excited I probably came over here and
played 15 times uh after after I found
out trying to like you know I just I
thought this was the hardest golf course
that I had ever played as a 16-year-old
trying to trying to come here and play
uh it it was a great experience I didn’t
play any good but um it it obviously set
motion you know my love for this place
and and how much I love coming back and
do you think there should be sponsor
invites now that this is a signature
event well it’s it’s it’s a tricky one I
mean in the pure meritocracy of it no
but you know we’re asking sponsors to to
Pony up extra money for these events and
so I I don’t see how you can ask them to
also not have sponsor exemptions so uh I
hear Arguments for for for both sides
and I I understand both sides I don’t I
don’t really have a strong opinion
either way I I think the elevated events
have been for me anyway have been a
fantastic experience they they have a an
aura about them that makes it feel like
a like a old school PGA Tour event like
they feel like a really big deal and
I’ve been very excited to compete in him
Doug first of all when have you not had
a strong opinion about
anything in press conferences I don’t
have strong are you uh is any part of
you surprised that that Scotty is is
playing this week with everything going
on and and is there a part of you that
hopes he doesn’t uh yeah there’s lots of
parts of me that hope he doesn’t play um
no I’m not surprised he’s a you know he
he’s one of those guys that when he
commits commits to do a thing he’s going
to do it
um yeah he’s he’s about as impressive as
a guy uh that that that that you’re ever
going to meet um I can remember when he
first came
out he uh I was I was razing him about
Texas football I was trying to get a
reaction out of him wouldn’t give it to
me you know you know was joking with him
and I was impressed that that he didn’t
he didn’t bite on that and then I can
remember it it was either his what what
what year is this for him five or
six four five five four five six five
five so this would have been maybe his
second year this his rookie year is
second year we’re playing together in
Detroit and he
shoots I mean something he shoots a bad
score the first day and then the second
day he goes out he’s got no chance to
make the cut and he shoots like this
perfect 65 like just all day just like
what you see now and that was really
impressive because most I I felt like
most guys that were first year they
would have kind of mailed it in but he
just went through his routine and and
and shot a great score so I Scotty’s
success has not surprised me he’s got
the he’s got like the perfect the
perfect mental strength and demeanor to
to do what he’s doing Ron and then Rex
speaking of him uh at least from the
outside looking in it seems like the gap
between him and others has widened a
little bit does it feel that way at all
or feels that way from the inside
looking out too yeah well how is it more
up to him to come back or how do guys
reach where he is or chasing him down
yeah that’s the that’s kind of the rub
of our game and and I’m sure the guys
felt the same way when tiger was winning
every tournament that he that he stepped
foot on it it feels like right now that
if if Scotty shows up with anything
above a b game he’s probably going to be
right there he’s just he’s been so
consistent he works extremely hard I can
remember at the Players this year he had
just won Bay Hill the day before and
Monday afternoon he’s out just I mean
golf ball after golf ball after golf
ball working working working so he he’s
very dedicated to it and like I said
he’s got a great mental approach to the
game and and um I don’t think that he
gets
enough I don’t think he gets enough
credit for the way that he does putt you
know everyone wants to pick aart his
putting but it seems plenty good to me
reck Brian just to follow up on that I
think 2012 and 2013 would have been your
your probably your biggest crossover
year playing alongside Tiger Woods when
he was winning a lot do you see
comparisons between those
two uh see 2012 I think tiger won five
times he won all he like swept the
invitation seems like Scotty on his
current trajectory would be very
comparable to that
um yeah he’s just you know he’s
extremely good and he’s and he’s playing
extremely good and and um you know I’m
I’m I’m super I’m super excited for him
and meredi to welcome their child into
the world they’re going to be fantastic
parents he’s he’s just he’s a he’s a
very agreeable person to be around and
and um I mean I I can’t say enough nice
things about him got one up front here
from
Tim thank you hey BR uh how has the
reception that you receive everywhere
changed since the open and and how
exciting is it to think to Thursday
morning or afternoon whenever it is that
you are in announced at this event
closest to home a lot of people you
probably haven’t seen or heard since
July uh welcoming you here yeah it’s
it’s certainly been a different
experience um being a major Champion but
I’m I’m I’m here for all of it I I love
it it’s been it’s been fantastic it’s
given me uh what I feel like is a little
bit more room to try and perform the way
that I feel like that I can perform
not that it’s given me any sort of a
cushion but it’s given me a little extra
confidence and it’s given me a little
extra motivation to try and work really
hard to try and put my game back into
the place that’s good enough to to win a
major
so it’s it’ll it’ll be it’ll be great I
mean I you know it I I I’ll appreciate
everyone that’s there and I I’ll be a
lot of friendly faces but you know when
when Thursdays come
around I I I I don’t notice that stuff a
lot it’s about you know hitting that
first t- shot and getting off to a good
start and you know I’m I’m trying to win
this golf
tournament good morning Sarah Smith with
wsav with this course being considered a
short course do you feel like it fits
your game better and also you had a
great start last year um does that give
you any confidence heading into this
year’s
tournament uh the confidence that I’ll
have going in this term will just be
because of my preparation this week um
usually after you struggle
especially for me after I struggle for a
week I I usually play pretty well the
next week it’s because I kind of refocus
and and and work again
um yeah I don’t I don’t I don’t think
about uh the golf course a whole lot as
far as you know if it suits me or if it
doesn’t suit me it’s they all present
their different challenges and and um I
I know what it I know what it takes to
contend around this place and those are
the things that I work on and uh
hopefully I get him a little sharper
going in
Thursday hey Brian my name is Jeff with
WTO seata Savannah um last Monday when
you were talking at the Masters a lot of
people asked about being in Georgia you
know home type of event are these two
weeks circled for you going into the
season every year and the excitement
level for you to to play so close yeah
for sure you growing up in Savannah
you’re almost a an adopted South
Carolinian uh over here and like I said
as a you know getting a chance to play
as an Amer here I I’m very familiar with
with this place I I love this area I
love the coastal Empire so I I’m I like
I said I’m just really thrilled that
this tournament is is getting such a
good field getting a little extra
recognition maybe some guys that that
wouldn’t normally play this event are
showing up and I’m I’m I’m fairly
certain they’ll fall in love with it and
it’ll be a a more permanent start on on
their
schedules all right Brian thank you very
much for your time and best of Lu this
week
