McIlroy and Lowry’s winning highlights from Zurich Classic | 2024

At the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry carded rounds of 61-70-64-68 to finish 25-under par for the tournament, edging out Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff for McIlroy’s 25th PGA TOUR title and Lowry’s third.

The PGA TOUR heads to New Orleans this week for the Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana. This is the only two-man team event on the PGA TOUR schedule. Rory McIlroy makes his tournament debut alongside good friend, Ryder Cup teammate and fellow Irishman Shane Lowry. McIlroy is looking to build some momentum this season, as he has posted only one top-15 thus far (third at the Valero Texas Open). Lowry recently went T4-3rd-T19 on the Florida Swing. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele play together this week in an attempt to claim the title back after their victory in 2022. Cantlay played well for a T3 finish last week at the RBC Heritage, while Schauffele’s T2 at THE PLAYERS Championship and 8th place finish at the Masters will give him confidence. The pair claimed T4 in defense of their title last year. Davis Riley and Nick Hardy will defend their 2023 title this week. No team has ever gone back-to-back at this event. Others to look out for are Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris, as well as three sets of brothers including Alex and Matt Fitzpatrick, Rasmus and Nicolai Højgaard and Parker and Pierceson Coody.

draw but he hung it a little bit depends

to work with I like it better over there

iron into the par five if he makes par
from here we might have to have a
conversation exactly this should be
pretty straightforward here oh come on

better just enough rain to keep
everything green but it’s firmed up as
opposed to maybe 2 or three hours North

leaders oh that is just awesome turning
just a little left but should be enough
to cover oh it does

mooy a couple feet hey Shane don’t worry
about it I’ll go and kick that in you
can pick that ball up I don’t know if I
can say it I can’t I can’t even I can’t
even after you hearing you say muffin
top I don’t think you can go anywhere
else maroy Taps it in there eight under
through 12 it’s going to be a lot
different absolutely like Shane Lowry
here now at
13 that’s a much more conventional line
right that yeah that’s where 90% of the
players have gone today that’s probably
where everybody will go tomorrow I
actually like being back here where you
have a full wedge and you can put some
spin on it especially with this whole
location oh this looks tasty oh nearly
holds it yeah

beautiful no struggle there right in the
middle of the hole so maybe the play is
delay it
up make back to back birdies get the
nine under par just two
back such a good iron player oh yeah
let’s go it’s got his
attention how did that land as softly as
it did it landed on the green and had a
ton of spin
not a whole lot of movement in this one
right around 10 ft Lowry to push it to
10 under oh stay
hot liked how he kept the pace up there
that was an easy putt to let fall off to
the right 274 yards and from where they
are I mean this whole location doesn’t
even look like it’s on the
green boy this is
aggressive what a shot wow these last
couple groups are hitting the best shots
we’ve seen in there really taking on
that flag
this looks like it’s got plenty of
speed tap in birdie for
Lowry but as y’all said tomorrow’s the
day I mean you got to go out there and
play a really solid round I mean
anything four five six under par is
really good an alternate shot now maoy
at 11 265 Front
279 right back into the wind and you’re
going to have to get it try and get it
all the way there it’s an oppos
though oh yeah do
it he almost made that well if of course
when Craig said no one was getting here
wonderful hands and he’s seen the
blueprint just bump it in The Fringe and
let it

robbed iron in there that PA five Lowry
at 13 where are we going well what are
we doing 80% of the fairways there’s not
a fairway over there oh boy it carried
the bunker and kicked on through so
maybe that was the Rory line what a
break that’s like 330 to cover up that
side I was like what are we doing here
this is uh he’s not even inside the top
100 in distance on the tour but not a
difficult pitch here you can bump it in
The Fringe or you can land it on the
green on the green is into the green
it looked to be executed well it just
quite release out good shot though yeah
if there’s any dent in his armor it’s
this
range nicely done good firm confident
pu I I don’t know I’d say the win right
now is 12 to 15 I don’t know if it’s a
good 20 added to the number he knows
better an ey this is PED and needs to
get up the water might be in play here

Lowry from just a couple feet he does
hit his short putts pretty firmly he
gives them a
hit oh no wow that was a
shove and that is a missed opportunity
for Lowry and
mroy how about this one here for
Lowry yeah can’t get there 170 and
that’s a about uh 50 yds in front of
that was unfortunate again that that
drive it’s another one that didn’t miss
by more than a yard to get back in the
Fairway inviting Hall location can drive
it all the way back there Set set
set nicely done and it on that down
slope and get it to

stop oh a huge save for Shane
Lowry 215 online 225 flag and on an up
slope in the
Fairway just a smooth swing with a
little
draw yeah that’s pretty fancy right
there

kidding okay that’s not too bad there
but with his skills around the game
around the green I think he can got a
chance to pitch this one in a little
influx of energy right

speed and just go ahead and get this
thing green on a lot of trouble up

is short game good chance to get this

good very nice when your your partner
can put you just around the green
they’re all important but this one just
to continue to to move towards the
lead really couldn’t execute three shots
better than that for this team it’s
still the second best round of the day
and they may need more than that that

pretty much just right to left tough to
get to that right hole

shot totally different ball flight here
starts at left got that one up in the
air trying to ride the wind and it’s not
coming back much no he’s got some green
to work with but you got to be cautious
on that Chip Shot it’s going to be going
down break down
win that’s a pretty good shot right
there yeah he had to be very cautious
that with Rory over the
green okay he follows it chases it in
there he knew he made it so nice birdie
for Shane
Lowry a little fist pump for Rory maroy
as
a left hole location can use that went
to swoop it
in ground will help

Beauty him back into the wind as well
yep and a birdie for
mroy three under on their opening nine
and they going to need some more on the
back nine to get them going they
certainly have the crowd
this is
aggressive that had some hang time
riding that
wind that’s one of the reasons why this
drive went so far down here for
maroy that any he go could go
in that’ll be three in four holes for
that team well they need it too it’s for
sure even more special so back to back

ferari and a reachable power five to
come it’s a four iron into a
hurting from the left
wind trying to turn it over against I
don’t think he can quite get
there you know very popular spot D in
he’s left himself a difficult
chip and the opened face lob wedge fer
Rory yeah that’s got 58 Dees of Loft on
it 10° of Bounce which is more than he’s
usually had sure that is good I’m
playing golf together 11 live at 11 with
Rory and he makes it does it good up and
down it sure was his short games on fire
here the last 40 minutes or so
finally 373 straight at it everything
helping in that direction he jumped out
of his shoes
doy fine there I think yeah that’s fine
odd sort of Li Frank uphill and a
hooking

to clean things up after the first stop
that is definitely to the conservative
side it’s all
right that’s where you wish the players
were miked up and you could ask them
like what went through that decision

mroy he really has turned it on around
the turn bir’s at 9 10 11 13 16 and 18

pairing
tomorrow mroy and Lowry just two shots
off the
lead just one0
left that seven iron starts left of it
starting to fade looks really good yeah
straight up in the air with it oh is

good beautiful shot great chance for
Eagle here make up for that bogey at the
first oh you just saw how slow that was
wow all right sh we’re going to clean
this one up so they go Bogi
birdie that’s where it
started bounce back just to lay
up he’s got a six iron so yeah he’s
definitely playing it out there to the
right he was sitting way down
and just to carry on with what we were
talking about when they decide which
ball to use that’s because on on
approach distance control spin control
trajectory is so important Andrew he
just walked up to me and said did you
step on our ball in the rough over
there that from 63 yards trying to use
the back stop a well played and now a
big punt coming up for
mooy and to and he’s got
it so a birdie at seven for mroy and
Lowry crowd’s kind of been willing him
on all week haven’t they and this one’s
very birdi for Rory maroy didn’t leave
any of that behind Trev yeah that’s
going to be up near 190 ball
speed and right up near the green eight
to eight 380 yd that’s ho high just off
the left not just Lo he’s left himself
on the correct side of the green to have
great angle perfect just left it in a
perfect
spot you mentioned he’s got great hands
and how about this

Larry lot of the lot of the pros go and
ask him for advice around the
greens yesterday got it right up pretty
much green side this is headed towards
those right bunkers I think it has
enough to cover them
oh yeah and some more wow would you like
to drive it like that just for one day
mind being there for two that Frank I’ve
been around this golf course a lot and
I’ve never seen a t-shot
here that was well played could be an
interesting moment right here we could
have a two or three shot swing between
Larry and meroy and if the lead is if
anything going to go a little bit to his
right should here they come and they got
11 the par
five well it started left but it’s going
left yeah not
cutting looks like it flew the bunker
Trevor it’s just stayed short of it
coall well above his feet this probably
come out a little left yeah they say
Luck of the Irish in but that’s not the
case here would have much rather had
that in the bunker oh yeah especially
with his talent this is Rory for bird he
made a good one at 10 can he make

one moving from his left to right that
was large I that was huge Frank you

up oh my Trevor that’s a big
mistake that really nice looks good good

Fairway he’s got it pushed back in the
stance flying
it check so good what a shot
the fans love it here at 18 as Lowry
will have that putt to get to 25 under

see oh this is M hit Trevor the wind is
pushing it back though yeah looked like
a little bit of a heel strike the one
hand came off with the way that ball was
flying at least little lower than normal
Trevor his last two full swings haven’t
been very good yeah one right one left
but this looks pretty good he’s walking
after
it and catches the bunker but it’s okay
there awkward awkward Rory may be
standing with one or both feet out of
the bunker there man he liked it too

it’s a milestone win for mroy the 25th
of his PGA Tour
career Tommy armor Johnny Miller among
those with
25 goodness PGA Championship how about
the
Putt and he knew it yeah it was a push
right off the bat
the emotions of winning and
losing how about that reaction two guys
that were friends and competitors
growing up first time in New Orleans
Rory mroy first win in New Orleans it’s
a milestone one for you number 25 Shane
this is your first win on the PGA tour
since winning the Open Championship what
does it feel like to get this one done
together uh absolutely amazing you know
we’ve had a we’ve had an an awesome week
here in New Orleans um you know the
crowds all week have been absolutely
amazing and um to get the support that
we’ve had out there and to to have so
much fun while doing it uh it’s been an
awesome week and obviously it’s feel
like it’s just a bonus to win at the end
but um uh couldn’t couldn’t be better to
have this man alongside me to to get get
a PJ to a win together how satisfying is
this one for you yeah I mean it’s great
it’s um saying it was much needed but
you know we felt coming into the week
that we both could do with a big jump in
the FedEx Cup and we both said the start
of the week let’s go and get 400 Points
each and you know that’s what we’ve done
I feel nearly feel a little bit bad
taking them cuz Rory carried me a lot of
the way but um yeah they’re mine and
they’re not going away don’t sell
yourself short you came up big when you
guys needed it most that bird on 18 in
regulation you had a ton of time to
think about it talk me through how you
were able to stay in the mental space
you needed to be in to make that one job
I don’t know look it was a short po but
I’ve been struggling recently uh on the
greens and uh I missed a c missed one
today as well and uh yeah I just had to
you know dig a little bit deeper but um
yeah it was nice nice to Wi in this look
it’s disappointing for the lads to
finish the way they did but you know
we’ve had just the best week and uh
anytime this man wants to partner me
I’ll be happy to do so these crowds have
shown up for you guys from day one you
got to Standing Ovation leaving the
restaurant last night we know New
Orleans loves you too how much are you
loving New Orleans and these fans yeah
it’s been an amazing week you know I’ve
I’ve never been here before Chen’s been
here a handful of times and you know
we’ve went out for some really nice
dinners and you know people could not
have been more hospitable or or nicer to
US during the week so uh I’d say um
we’re going to come back into fan next
year what do you think I hope so okay I
hope so I’ll be
here match matching uniforms we’ll see
these two guys right back here next year
