Hello and welcome back to Josh YouTube today I’m going to be talking about the whole golf game and how you can get your handicap cut in half straight away there’s going to be multiple things that you need to do in your golf game and we’re going to go all the way through it

From Long game all the way to approach play short game and even putting we’re going to be covering it in the Sim and I’m going to probably drop another video when I’m out on the course when the weather’s a bit better in the UK so even

If you’re a 36 hand handicap you might want to get down to 18 if you’re at 18 you might be wanting to get into that single figure Mark at a nine handicap and I’m going to go all the way to even if you’re at a six handicap getting you

Down to around about that free handicap and trust me you’re going to be super close to the scratch Mark there and then we’re going to go to aite level of what I do how you can get into them plus figures and really really get on top of

This game okay we’re going to start off with the most important Club in the bag that is the big stick now if you’re at 36 handicap and you’re wanting to get down to the 18 Mark for me number one is get it in play now we’ve got a par 4

Here 425 yards a pretty tough hole you know if you’re a 36 handicap we’re literally looking at probably making a bogey SL double and run on one of these holes but step one get it in play now if you’re someone that has a big old slice

I’m going to say play with that ball flight if you’re someone that’s got a big hook we’re going to play for that as well but we’re going to aim in a position to where we’re going to allow some room for error now here there is water all down the left hand side but

There’s nothing actually over on the right so fortunate enough we can now aim appropriate to that so we’re going to move our aim line now into the right rough this might seem like a negative approach but it’s really really not even guys at the elite level middle of the

Fairway sometimes is not the target so here if you’re a 36 handicap we are literally looking at just getting this puppy in play not very pretty 180 yards down the middle but that’s all we want to achieve even if it’s in the rough we’re in play

We’re down there um I think that’s where a lot of guys get probably misled into taking that aggressive line off a te when you really really don’t need to so now we’re going to go to 18 to kind of single figure now we’re going to be wanting to get something really in play

Giving us a good chance to hit it on the green here we’ve got a tough t-shot it kind of sets up for a right to left ballf flight but when you’re at 18 handicap I feel like you’re someone that should be identifying what ballf flight

You have to play play with now for me I play a draw I hit something right to left pretty much every single time but if you’re someone that fads it we are simply going to play for that ball flight now the more and more you play for this the more and more comfortable

You’re going to get hitting that ball flight it’s not negative hitting a slice or a fade you know um it’s just playing the ball flight that you hit so if you’re someone that is hitting a Big Slice we’re actually going to aim in the left water here maybe just inside it and

Play for that ball flight number one thing is make sure we hit it left or right so we’re going to start identifying what ball flight we have and we’re going to play for that so we’re aiming down the left hand side we’re just going to fade it back to the middle absolutely perfect

Now it’s not a negative Approach at all it’s just playing to your comfortability and what you feel comfortable doing now now for me I feel much more comfortable hitting a draw but you know we’re starting to identify what ball flight we need to hit to get that in play similar

To the 36 handicap I think the 36 handicap we’re kind of aiming away from like the trouble as we get down to 18 we’re now aiming for like a desired shot to hit a good position in the Fairway and then lastly we’re going to talk about that real elite level now so the

Elite level to this is going to be getting it in play and quite far down there um distance relates to birdies and giving yourself better chances in from that second shot if we’re 110 yards in versus 160 yards our averages are going to be a lot better from 110 versus 160

So kind of relates to a bit of distance with this and also keeping that accuracy down um we’re going to go for a shot here where I know the troubles on the left so I might feel like for me I’m aiming a touch further right probably at

That right bunker that you can see and then I’m just going to try and fill for that little drawer should be perfect if it flies that bunker it should be money and there we go just over the Trap pretty of a poor strike but in absolute A1 for our second shot

Okay we’re now going to be talking about approach play um we’re 150 yards away here we’ve got a little bit of trouble short we’re going to go back to that same topic that we spoke about off the tea very very important to note that when you’re at that 36 handicap and

You’re out here trying to make you know Bogies is a great score so we got to think percentage wise here if I’m in a 36 handicap I’m going nowhere near that flag we’re actually going to aim at the right edge of the green here and you

Know you got to think if you hit the right edge of the green and we knock it to 5 foot we’re actually giving ourselves a chance at a par that’s two under handicap straight away so by playing away from the trouble we’re actually giving ourselves more chances

To reduce our overall score by taking on flags we are now risking um you know potentially a good drive you might hit a fantastic drive off a te you know you’re pumped you’ve got 150 in great chance to make birdie well trust me it’s a great

Chance to also make double if this pin is in a rough position like it is front left I’m going nowhere near it we’re literally playing to the right edge of the green we’re playing sensible Golf and we are noticing that look even if we are on the right edge of the

Green heck I’ve got a great chance to make up and down now for our par so now we go to a nine handicap you know we’re looking to break into that single figure Mark front left flag pretty dangerous now our game plan here is going to be to

Play kind of a percentage shot but we can be semi-aggressive with this one so I know that kind of around 148.5 yards very precise there that is our Mark that we don’t want to land it any shorter than that any shorter than that we’re in the water so I now know in

My head I’m probably looking at a 150 150 five carry shot not going to be too bad right and if I aim in a realistic position where if I push it we’re fine if we pull it we’re fine this looks pretty good maybe a touch further

Right and we’re in a good position there so now we’re thinking the flags at 149 we know that at 148.5 was our number is pretty safe but we’re going nowhere near that we’re not going to Temp fate and I think if you can tick off green as you’re going around if you can

Hit middle of the greens give yourself a chance for the two puts you know you’re going to start giving yourself these chances you might get a nice friendly flag hit it to middle of the green hit it into six foot all of a sudden we’re taking chances at birdie and you know

We’re reducing that handicap so so easy so we know that a 155 shot here is going to be great that’s not to say that you know you might catch it a chunk heavy and it um go close so 154 right over the flag stick just

Pulled it a touch but you know we’re 36 38 ft away there fantastic chance at of Birdie so now we go to the elite level okay we’re going to go back to our aim point we’re at 148.5 now we’re going to dial that in a little bit tighter so I

Know that there’s a bank behind the flag that runs out at about 155 so I know that that’s that’s my Max um distance that I want to carry this and I kind of want to be in between the two we want to be like in between 150 and 155 so I’m

Really trying to dial this in I might even tell myself right I want to carry this 152 on the button you know be super precise with it but I am going to go maybe three four yards to the right of the flag because I’m still playing for

My draw shot and we’re still giving ourselves room for error so I I think that’s the misconception with guys that are at an elite level it’s actually not about making more birdies it’s about eliminating the Bogies that’s the real important thing to do so let’s go 99

Here we’re looking for that 152 be real precise dial it in and I’ve hit this 149.5 so it’s a little short of our Mark might come back a little bit and here we go you know you’ve hit a good drive off a te we’ve now got 12T for birdie so you

Know this is a great chance all of a sudden but I’ve not done that through going directly straight at the flag stick we’re still giving ourselves a little bit of margin for error and I think noticing doing this you kind of go more and more error to start with and

You give yourself less margin as you get better and I think that’s understanding and being confident in what you’re doing you know I’m pretty comfortable that I can hit to a number but if I’m off a 36 handicap I’m probably not so we’re going to give ourselves a bigger margin for

Error and a safer error to aim when we’re at that point of our golf game we’ve got to accept you know I’m not dialing it into a 10 yard radius I’m more of a 40 yard radius that’s fine but you’ve got to accept that aim to a point

Where you feel comfortable and look if you’re at 36 handicap and you knock it right edge of the green get your poter out you know two put it you’ve made par you’re now two shots up on your handicap so that’s not as easy for elite level gol for we’ve really got

To dial in hit a fantastic shot as we did there you know we might miss the 12 footer we’ve walked off with the same score that you’ve now made so approach play a super important part of the puzzle we’re now going to go onto short

Game okay so moving on to short game now we’ve hit it in the position here that I said about the high handicapper leaving it right side of the green was pretty safe left was game over now we’ve got a tough chip here and we can talk all

Three different shots that we can play here number one is going to be the Putt and run which I recommend for that high handicap it’s a super easy shot to play it it takes out the risk of duffing it and thinning it we’re literally going to

Put a puttting stroke on of it with a seven iron and look anywhere on the dance for is a great shot here we obviously know that we don’t want to go left so we’re going to aim a touch further right put a p and run technique on it

And get on down that slope you might get a bit lucky and that’s a great shot you know we’ve now got 9 ft for our uh par which is two under handicap so straight away you might have played a hole there super super simple limitating all the damage

That you could have brought in off the tea the water the approach shot we played away from the water we’re hitting sensible shots even on the Chip Shot we’re playing a sensible shot too and you’re giving yourself chances you know that’s the key to this give yourself the

Chances to make these pars not give yourself you know a great chance off the te and then we risk it all for maybe a birdie and then we’re three four shots behind before we’ve even started so keep it simple put and run technique you cannot really go wrong with that and

That’s how i’ be playing it if I was a high handicap looking to reduce it down so we’re now going to move on to kind of that 18 handicap to nine handicap shot this is a toughy you know first off I’m just going to say that this is a super

Hard shot if you’re making up and down here you’ve done really really well so I might get out my 60 um really trust a good chipping technique I spoke about that also in my video um previously if you you haven’t watched it get on it we’re going to keep everything pretty

Simple as well here just going up to a 60 so a bit more Loft we’re going to try and land this at around a point of probably 10 11 yards and it just released down the slope I’m really trying to visualize in my head even on

The simulator right where have I got to land this to give this a chance at going in so we’re looking at right around that 10 11 yard Mark a nice little soft chip come on Landing it at 10 oh it was a soft bounce but it’s not the end of the world

You know you might play that again oh look at this one fast screens I put these on 13 on the stim probably not ideal for an 18 handicap but right let’s go let’s go again should we cuz that wasn’t a great example so we now know I need to land it a touch

Further you don’t get second attempts in golf but you know like I said if you’ve hit it to here we’ve given ourselves a chance um but it’s a tough Chip Shot so accepting that if you’re not making up and down nine times out of 10 here it’s

Not really a worry because even a tour proo is probably going to struggle from this spot so right let’s try and land this at about 12 yards and that is absolutely perfect and there we go go that is how I would play it if I was trying to get down to that

Single figure handicap and now we’re going to talk about the elite level shot so the elite level shot you can see there’s a slight slope down onto the pin we’re going to actually get rid of it so a very very risky shot but at the elite level you

Need to take these risks because you know dropping a a shot here is just a big no no we’ve got to kind of take something on here hit a percentage flop shot and give yourself a chance at making that par maybe even hoing it let’s try and land this at 15

Yards little floppy Z not a bad shot at all so you can see there three different shots put and run kind of a simple Chip Shot Landing it to a point and then kind of a mini flop shot um three different risk elements in the last one being pretty tough shot to

Play second one you know it’s all right if you understand a basic chipping technique and then the high handicap shot we’re just taking all the damage out of it we’re hitting a basic Chip Shot we’re giving ourselves a chance at the par and as I’ve spoke about all the

Way through this it’s damage limitation okay moving on to the flat stick now this is an area where you could go so in depth and almost one that I kind of could do a a 50 minute video on separately from this um we’re going to talk about three basic

Points we’re going to go number one being start line and that’s one thing that you can massively help um with your putting is just improving that start line if you’re starting the ball online every single time you know you’re going to straight away see a big Improvement

If you’ve got these dead straight Parts you got to be holding them so kind of that high handicap I’d really really focus on a good start line that’s a great place to start number two kind of that a 18 handicap looking to go single figures is green reading and then the

Last but not least is going to be pace so pace is everything and I I’ll I’ll touch on that in a minute but starting off with start line so for me it’s super easy with my lab putter it’s so so stable but straight away we’ve got a

Line on the ball now you’ll see most guys on tour pretty much all of them use a line it’s a great great guide for that putter to set it behind the ball see that line and stroke it down so number one is going to be start line if you’re

A high handicapper just focus on getting a great start line with that pter okay number two is going to be green reading now look in a simulator it’s aead of a lot easier we got some lines on the screen showing us the speed of the slope how fast it is it helps a

Bunch and I think this is the area that Sim golf um you know for me I have 20 21 putts round if I’m really hot with the flat stick when I’m out on the course if I’m really hot with the flat stick I’m like 28 29 putts so big big difference

In putting on the simulator is super super easy to understand GRE reading but when you get out on the course try and visualize this similar um you know Green grid that’s here in front of us see the slope kind of moving away from you how

Severe is that slope you can see as it gets to the end it’s a bit flatter visualize all the low points on the green so we know that there’s a low point on the right hand side slope’s probably going to be going that way um

Feel it in your feet this is a massive thing on aimo and as I say I could touch on a video and and do this in a whole segment on its own um I feel slope with my feet when I’m out on the course so I

Get on a slope I can feel whether my left foot is lower than my right and I feel that percent in my feet so kind of a tough one to do but in the Sim I kind of visualize it going down the grid so I’m going to aim

This a touch outside the left when I say A touch I’m on about probably 3 4 feet now these are 13 on the stim so extremely quick but you can just visualize this here just kind of going over this first segment it moves a bunch

Kind of gets to here and it might just hold on to that left lip so you know I’m visualizing it going down that green grid I’m just rolling in on that left lip so let’s see if we can roll one in oh bit too much but you get the idea

Okay and last but not least the elite level putting Pace a very very important word with putting is Pace how good is your speed control now you can do this with a few different things a lot people it’s becoming more and more popular it’s length of strok so Chuck down a ruler

Get your length of Strokes hit some putts you know how far does your 10in stroke back swing go kind of a good way to feel it if you don’t have that you know feel in your hands but for me I can see it I can feel it in my hands you

Know if someone said to me throw that in the bin I’d just stand up here and I’d just go bang throw it in the bin you know as you would kind of feel that the same with putting I I stand behind a putt and someone’s like right hit it 20t

Bang I’ll hit it 20t so that feel element is the same for me as I go from you know throwing something in a bin to now putting um you know and I think that’s a big point about I say throwing something in the bin is because we don’t

Stand here and take practice swings you know we’re not like visualizing throwing like this you literally get something and you go bang straight in you know it’s so so easy do that the same with putting a really really easy one to try so we’re 43 ft here it’s 2T and 1 in

Down just a little top tip for simulator golf every foot is 12 in an extra one so we’re at 25 Ines down that actually plays like 25 ft so 25 of 43 is 18 ft I need to hit this part 18 ft for it to stop in that grid so we’re going to

Really visualize it visualize what 18 ft feels like on a 13 stim don’t ask me how I’ve managed to train that but I have and I’ll show you don’t leave it short don’t leave it short pretty good speed um you know that’s something I’ve just trained in

Here over time and I’m I’m quite good at that fill element like I say I can just throw something in a bin I do that the same with PN as well try not to over complicate that’s what we do with golf we over complicate it every single time

But that’s going to be how you can prove your game in all of them different areas it’s very very important that we start in stages as well you start at that you know top end of 36 handy cap and you work your way down you get better and

Better you get more confident over time and you’ve got to accept what level you’re at you know if you’re at 36 play away from the damage if you’re at 18 and you’re looking to get down to N9 stop start to play with a ball flight start

To train that in start to dial in numbers start to dial in Pace putting all of a sudden these things that were tough become easy you know that handicapper come shrinking down the elite level very very tough um and it’s very important to mention the elite level doesn’t happen every single day

Golf is a game that is so hard no one’s discovered no no one’s got the hack for it um everyone’s still trying to figure it out but we can make it Easier by doing certain things so give them all a go let me know how that helps your game

And I really hope that handicap comes cutting down in half let me know in the comments what you want to see next on this channel love to everyone supporting like And subscribe we’ll see you all for the next one

  1. I could explain that in one sentence …
Play better , use less strokes each round. Full stop. 😂
If anyone doesn’t have a clue why they can’t lower their handicap they’re brain dead …. “Get it in play ? I never thought of that?”
    “Don’t three putt? Ohhhh that’s why I keep shooting 95” 😂

  2. Josh. This is one of the very best golf instruction videos on YouTube. Great content and great presentation. The mental, strategic and shot approach discussions are particularly insightful. It certainly will be helping me next time I am on the course. Thanks and keep it up!
