How crazy is this right? I can’t believe what i was watching! This one could of gone either way in my opinion! The golf rules can be VERY harsh sometimes but in this case maybe it doesn’t seem that way for Harris English… Harris English was playing the 2nd hole at Colonial Country Club, where this bizarre rules situation started at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
This entire potential rules infraction from Harris English has golf pro’s and fans divided one of those golf pro’s being Harry Hall! I would love to know what you think about this potential rules Cheating that was caught LIVE on the golf channel Broadcast!

Whats your verdict here! Watch the entire video and let me know what you think on this POTENTIAL rules infringement
This is what sucks about Professional golf. The ball moving 5mm before the ball is struck means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and this is foolishness. Especially when you consider there are starving children in the world. ( I know it’s an unrealistic comparison but seriously)
This is so stupid. HE’S the one who told people the ball moved. AND it doesn’t f******g matter!
If you’re going to count on people telling you the ball moved then count on them telling you if they caused it to move. If not, then just carry on. He gains no advantage.
God damn the rules of golf are sometimes so stupid I feel like punching some USGAhole in the head.
Ladies and gentleman… This shows the importance of knowing your English. 😁
No video, so no way I can form an opinion.
Integrity of golf versus money 🧐
This is stupid. There is ZERO advantage gained either way. Good lord, get a life.
Golf needs to change their rules. Landing in some lazy guts divet from a peach of a drive should be a free drop.
The ball can rock back and forward when you address it, can it not.
I hate to inform you that there is no Rule 26 in golf any longer. That disappeared after the rules change of 2019. If he caused the ball to move, Rule 9.4 applies with a 1 stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced to the original spot. If it is determined that the ball moved due to natural forces, there is no penalty and the ball must be played from it's new location. The rules official has to make the determination based on his interaction with the player and any witnesses. Unfortunately, after the official makes a decision (even if it is later proven to be wrong) then that decision stands and the player must proceed accordingly based upon that decision.
I wish we all could’ve watched the actual video of it at the beginning (to get our initial 1st reaction thoughts on it), then see how they may vary or not after your commentary/dissection of it. Just one man’s opinion, but keep up the great work otherwise 🥂🏌️😎
Clearly he has benefit of doubt, no one can prove otherwise and nobody should be saying he cheated. Many injustices have occurred when clearly nobody can prove anything. This isn’t the OJ Simpson farcical, it’s a question of a rule that could be clouded if the language is also clouded.
Which player is this? Harris Reed or Patrick English?
Isn't the new rule if the ball moves and you did not intend to hit it you then move it back with no penalty even on the putting green when addressing the ball. I thought I heard that's a new rule just curious
I wonder what Patrick Reed would have said? i think we all know….as far as i am concerned ….no penalty!
gosh, you have got the whole thing drastically wrong! There are only 25 Rules. Prior to 2019, ball at rest moved was governed by Rule 18-2, since then, by Rules 9.2 and 9.4. Since 2019, the words "address" and "hazard" no longer exist in the Rules. Under the current Rule 9.2, the player is not guilty unless there is knowledge and virtual certainty that he caused the ball to move. You were probably quoting the pre-1984 Rule Book (Rule 26? Were you even born then?). In those days, the player was guilty unless proven innocent; now the player is innocent unless proven guilty.
Benefit of the doubt!
Hes a professional golfer if he cheats and doesnt stick to the truth he should be disqualified not in the spirit of the game
I can't comment as I can't find the incident to judge for myself. Years ago when I was in competitions I once moved a ball at an address and declared the incident to the players with me. The other three players were nowhere near me, no cameras, I could easily have got away with it, but I would have felt like s**t. That declared shot cost me a place, however, I slept well that night. I think playing golf comes with responsibilities. I wonder how Harris English slept that night?
Just more evidence why the PGA Tour and any other major tour should have a rules official walking with every group. The amount of money the tours make can easily facilitate this. No more excuses.
This happens to every golfer multiple times per round if not per hole. Stupid rule.
Coached by Paddy Read,maybe.
It is tournament play.
He said, she said! Going on a two sided narrative without actually seeing the action…..who the hell knows!
Stirring the pot here.
I mean if you can cheat and get away with I'm all for it, the game is hard enough to play by the rules.
Golf's penalties and nit-picking rules derive (I believe) from what is refered to the terms of, "its a gentleman's game." But even one stroke most certainly during stroke play will cost you a lot. So fast forward to today. We see the money etc is substantially more. And there is a theory now of players using the rules to their benefit.
No one puts their club behind a ball and misses it if the ball moved. I've been playing too long to say thats a given. Without video evidence, the rules are square on the shoulder of the player himself, to call a penalty on himself. In this case, its impossible to tell what happened.
So the adage remains, "it is a gentleman's game."
Tiger actually cheat when he was removing loose impediments away from his ball, and it then moved. I know he saw it move because his hands froze. Thats exactly what anyone would do if they saw their ball move. He didnt not call the penalty on himself. Saying the ball oscillated. It took meetings with tour officials and the video evidence to prove he was caught cheating. His ball moved about a quarter turn. (The one chance for him to redeem himself from a mess of untrustworthiness yet his character showed.)
Golf is a game of character, be sure, it will find you out.
The rule refers to grounding the club. I may be wrong but I think I’ve read elsewhere that club head being in contact with top of long-ish rough does not constitute grounding. “Addressing the ball” does not constitute grounding, an earlier post correctly referred to J Nicklaus’ career-long practice. Also agree with earlier post about headline. Our opinions are not proof.
An interesting one.
The rules but is easy.
If the ball was moving still or was at rest and then moved due to natural forces, no penalty and play it where if lies (unless the ball had been dropped as part of another rule or marked and replaced on the green).
If an action of the player causes it to move it is a one stroke penalty and it must be replaced to its original spot. If it is not replaced it is a 2 stroke penalty for playing the ball from the wrong position.
The difficult bit is what caused the ball to move. It looks like English said he saw the ball move during his practice strokes but that it was not caused by him and it moved more when he addressed it, again not caused by him. If that is true then no penalty. For me unless there is evidence to the contrary you have to take the players word as being true. I’m not aware that he has ever been accused of cheating before?
But, what I would have done in this situation is spoken when I first saw it move, during my practice strokes, to make it clear that the ball was still moving and this was nothing to do with me.
I don’t get the impression he was trying to cheat
To avoid these type of situations, I never adhere to the rules of golf. I don't play in tournaments and if I'm playing with some person(s) I don't know I always state upfront that I will take mulligans, I will move my ball to a better lie, and I never keep score, that being said I don't improve anything on the green. I could be wrong about the person who said this but I think it might have been Pat Bradley who said "amature golfers should hit em 'till there happy as long as they're not holding up play." I agree and I always have fun and leave the course happy.
I saw this happen. It didn't strike me as a big deal. Could hardly see the ball move.
