MONTGOMERY, Texas – Tarleton State Men’s Golf opens the spring portion of their season on Monday, competing at the Bentwater Intercollegiate at the Miller Golf Course at Bentwater.
The Texans successfully clinched their first-ever Division 1 team title at the FAU Invitational at Panther National in the fall. En route to the team title in their final fall event, Tarleton State posted the second-lowest 36-hole score in the program’s Division I history at the FAU invite.
Leading the program’s resurrection since 2022, Cain has led the program’s transition into Division I. Cain guided his Texans to the top of the player leaderboard at the FAU Invitational to cap off the fall season.
Sophomore Luis Buech and freshman Maximilian Bjornstorm tied for third at the FAU Invite and posted career-best finishes to go with the third-lowest 36-hole score in the Division I era at 6-under-par. Buech was named October WAC Golfer of the Month, finishing as the top Texan on the player leaderboard in the final two fall tournaments.
Freshman Alvaro Pastor also shot an exciting season-low 6-under 66 in the first round of the FAU Invite, tying the third-lowest round in the D1 era. Pastor ended the tournament tied for sixth at 5-under-par.
“What an incredible way to finish off the fall season,” Cain said. “Everything we have been working on with our processes and mental routines paid off.. We look to continue to build off this to be ready for the spring.”
Other talent on the Texans consists of junior Juan Ballester, sophomore Drew Ironside sophomore Kellen Young and freshman Nicholas Papacharalambous. Ballester and Young competed in every tournament for the Texans in 2024-25, with Young’s 68 first round score matching the lowest for a round by a Tarleton State freshman in the Division I Era. Ironside collected his first top 10 finish at the 2025 WAC Championship. He was the first freshman in the program’s Division I era to collect a top 10 finish at a conference championship.
Other prominent golf teams will also be attending the Bentwater Intercollegiate Tournament, including VCU, Southern, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Oakland, Southeastern Louisiana, Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston, East Texas A&M, Ohio, Central Arkansas, Baylor and Texas Southern.
At the 2025 Bentwater Intercollegiate Tournament, Chattanooga finished in first, with Sam Houston State in second place. Midland College finished in third while Abilene Christian finished in fourth at last year’s event. and in fourth was Abilene Christian.
