SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. — Late Thursday night, firefighters battled flames at a Camden County golf course.

The Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District says it was dispatched to the Porta Cima Golf Course in Camden County Thursday night to put out a natural cover fire. It spanned about two acres in size, according to the department.

The fire was contained to a wooded area between holes 2 and 4 on the golf course, and the playable part of the course itself was not damaged. The call came in around 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Chief Joseph LaPlant tells Ozarks First the course had a burn permit for some maintenance during their slow period.

“During this time of year, golf courses are cleaning up trees and downed limbs. They had a burn permit on their property, thought they had it out when they left. It’s the nature of the beast of large scale landscaping, it happens,” LaPlant says.

Two brush trucks, a tanker, and two Chief officers helped put the flames out. The district did note that there are some hot spots and logs that could continue to burn.

“We don’t want to drive a tanker out onto their course to damage their livelihood, so we had an access challenge but we got it taken care of,” says LaPlant.

Porta Cima grounds crews tended to hot spots overnight.

People in the area may notice smoke that could be seen from State Road MM near Resplander Road.
