Alright, let me break down this simple scenario: we're 25yds from the pin and we've got about 6ft of green to work with. We're going to assume it's mostly rough between us and green, and maybe we are slightly downhill, so, ideally, we want to carry it.
If the lie is decent fairway or rough — there's no issue. There are multiple shots available to us (standard chips, flops, etc.). But here are the two lie scenarios:
1) Hardpan (dead dormant hard fairway with no grass under the ball to get the club under).
2) Saturated fairway (there is grass, but it's really wet – all practice swings instantly dig).
How are you hitting either of these shots? What's the smart play here?
Obviously, the smart play is not to get into this position in the first place, but let's assume you were playing an unfamiliar course and this is the situation you are in.

Hit it on the green and 2 putt for par or bogey
I’m either chunking it 3 yards, are blading it over the green. There is no in between
Flop city
For real though, I’d probably try to chip with a higher arc to land it on the fringe to try and take out as much of the rollout that I can
60 degree pitch aiming pin high or a bit further back, for the first scenario I just make sure I’m using super soft hands and hit the ball first. For the second scenario I just come in much steeper and more aggressively.
Depends on how good you are. If you suck at pitching then I’m suggesting you take a 56 – 60 and pitch it right onto the fat chunk of the green. Land it at the pin and hope it checks a bit.
If you’ve got game, I’m suggesting you open up the club face, move ball back in stance, and hit a hard spinner straight at the front edge of green. Steep downswing, really push that bounce into ground and let the ball ride up the grooves to create plenty of spin.
If the fairway is saturated and unplayable, rule 16.1 grants a golfer free relief from temporary water that affects the stance or swing. Take that, move to the nearest drop location and do work. It’s not that hard a shot.
Is the green flat?
Lob shot if youre a god. Or just hit a pitch shot and 2 or 3 putt. from this spot were just trying to not make worse than bogey
