Golf Shafts For Dummies – Every Shaft Flex Explained!

Golf shafts can be perceived as an absolute mine field when it comes to specification.

Does anyone truly know what direction to go in as a player or fitter in relation to overall weight and flex.

In today’s video I offer an entry level baseline for you to consider when changing shafts. I explain how different weights can play a role in certain ball flights & if you should consider different shafts for different lofted irons.

  1. I’ve had the amt blacks for two years now and trying out the kbs tour 120 in irons soon. Can’t wait to see the difference.

  2. While I think club fitting is a great concept, there are so many bad experiences out there combined with ridiculous markups. The problem is fitting can be so inconsistent and is heavily dependent on both the experience of the fitter and their character. I went to my local Club Champion and will absolutely tell everyone that they should never go there. The fitting was based on 6 iron only and when they gave me a quote they picked a shaft that was one of the stock options from the factory for Srixon and ultimately charged an incredible markup for this “service”. To top it off my clubs were delivered rubber band together and there was no one there to go do a secondary fitting to make sure the gapping of each club was correct and all of the clubs were the same swing weight which I have since learned is not typical. I would gladly pay more for the fitting service if the fitter were actually knowledgeable and the ultimate product and service was superior to what I can get by just ordering custom club builds off the PGA Superstore website.

  3. Can you make a similar video about how to approach lengthening/shortening clubs while keeping SW playable. I'm playing 1" longer and have struggled before to keep swing weights favorable for me

  4. I commented in one of your recent videos on fitting that getting the right shaft is FAR more important than brand. I think this video really hammers that home. I mean, it's only the thing that controls the energy transfer from you to the working end.

  5. I would love to see you do a video on the Driver loft sleeve settings with direct comparison of a 10.5 degree head cranked down to 9.0 degrees and show the difference between that and a standard 9.0 head and what the differences in ball flight would be like. And vice versa where you bring a 9.0 head up to 10.5 degrees and show a direct side by side of the shots with the one that is native loft vs adjusted. I currently have a 10.5 degree head and want to get a 9.0 head but I don't know if I necessarily NEED to buy a new head or if I should just crank down my loft with the loft sleeve, however I dont really want my face to open if I crank down my current 10.5 to 9.0. Love your vids Trottie <3

  6. Idk what to do anymore. I played for ten years using x100s but they can get snappy for me, I feel like I have to make a hold off cut move for it to go straight. I switched to project x 6.5 and they feel terrible. The partial shots suck for me. They don’t turn over which is great but I feel like my ball striking has suffered.

  7. I love watching these vidoes, and i totally buy into getting the right heads and shafts fitted perfectly for you, maximising every club in your bag to give the most consistent values and best result's possible. But, there is always a but, Joe Average (like me) doesn't have the money for this kind of fitting and the probable several thousand pounds worth of shafts. But more importantly almost none of us has access to someone like Trottie, the Kingdom, or PXG's Scotsdale national. A fitting for me "Joe Average" entails trying a couple of heads and hitting some shafts with a 7 iron. Whereas that's better than buying a set using pure guess work it's not ideal. So, I and every other Joe Average watch Experts like Trottie and dream of one day being able to have that ultimate fitting experience. To this date I have had two iron fittings 6 months apart, result was 2 different heads. First, a game improvement iron with KBS 95 in stiff metal shafts and second fitting was players irons with Mitsubishi chemical metal mesh graphite shaft in regular flex. Which is it? I'm kinda more confused than ever. So, I'll continue to dream of the perfect fitting with a true expert while actually wondering if the average fit, by a normal fitter using just a 7 iron makes any difference at all to us mere mortals.

  8. Shafts and fittings are interesting to me. I have been fit for many different sets and what I find is my swing speed is different warmed up pounding balls on a simulator than when I jump out of the truck and onto the first tee in my men’s league. I prefer soft light shafts even though the numbers suggest otherwise because I don’t get to play or practice and frankly they are just easier to hit😂😂😂 anyone else have that experience?

  9. “Golfshafts for dummy’s”
Trotty it’s really complicated. You can’t do it. Go find someone to do it for you. I’m not going to explain anything for you beyond reassuring you that you can’t do it.

  10. Hey Trottie, have you checked out Avoda or foreward golf? Not so much for their clubs but more for their fitting system and its on the move design. Specifically Foreward golf and the remote fitting kit. It seems that would be ideal for those who can't make it out to a good fitter. On the other hand, I can't see how that would be scalable… it's rather niche.

  11. @trottiegolf
So weight is more important than flex? And weight dictates flex in some cases?

Would it be fair to say shafts that are 95-105ish grams should be regular, 110-120 stiff, and 125+ x?

And with that said, I’m currently in 105 S. What scenario would you see someone get fit into 105 R vs S vs X?

  12. I'm 57, had 23 yr old irons and 12 yr old driver, just recently got fitted. I went from Stiff in my clubs to standard irons and a light stiff driver. I have had the irons for the summer and took a little getting used to. When I hit them well I really hit them well. when I don't it is my inconsistent swing. I took the driver from the box to a round of golf. I took it easy on the first swing and hit it straight down the middle about the distance of my old one. The second hole I smoked it with a little draw about 20 yds past what I was hitting my old one. The draw was odd as I always hit a fade. The lighter shaft felt a lot better than my old driver. Go get fit for clubs, it will help.

  13. Love how he simplified the information. I play PX 6.5LZ from 3 iron to 54 and a standard PX 6.0 in my 58. Oddly – my driver and fairway wood are stiff but 70 and 80g respectively. Love the fitting I went through, left feeling confident and well informed.

  14. "I couldn't tell you a tour player that like x-flex wedges." Isn't Rory playing PX 6.5 in his 46, 50 and 54, then PX 6.5 Wedge in his 60? That's an x-flex shaft. It's just that his irons have a stiffer shaft still (7.0)..

  15. Speed doesn't equal weight you should use. I have a slow swing speed and have tried different KBS shafts, Nippon etc but the love the dynamic gold s400 so smooth and so much control. All this "theory" is BS its all personal

  16. I have a natural lower ball flight. I’m not a really fast swinger (100 mph driver). I was fitted to 95 gm iron shafts and they felt terrible. Moved back to 115 and my tempo felt much better.
The “feel” was terrible on the lighter shafts. Other options for more spin and height?

  17. Hey Trottie great video as always. I’m looking at a new 3 wood and wondered if there’s a rule of thumb for when to go from x-stiff to TX? My 3 wood speed is ~115mph, driver 118-120 (on course speed). I’ve stopped using my old fitter after a bad experience and am yet to find a new one so any advice is appreciated

  18. I truly don't understand why they chose to make shaft names and descriptions so goddamn convoluted. And every brand has their own kind of unique differences in these things. It's so confusing. Like Denali red vs Denali blue etc etc as well

  19. Love this. I'm a bit of a gear information junkie so this is right up my street. I play Project X 6.0 shafts. My 7 iron swing speed has gone from mid 80s to mid 90s in the last 18 months. I've never tested heavier shafts in my head but the few heavy shafts I played with I struggled with, probably because the swing weight changed more significantly than the overall weight. These shafts were never fitted. They worked great originally and now my speed is up my miss is definitely bigger. On the other hand I've gone the other way with driver, swing speed has gone from 110avg to 117avg but I've changed from a 65g Stiff flex to a 50g Soft Regular flex shaft. Theoretically is the wrong direction but it's the best thing ever to happen to my driving. I'm glad my fitter was open minded enough to try that with me and I'm finally carrying the ball over 300 yards with 170+ ball speed.

  20. When i first got fitted I was hitting my 7 iron about 130 carry, using very old clubs that werent right at all. Got fitted for $taper lites 95g in reg flex and over time have gone from 140 carry with my irons to 165-170 ish. My irons now spin and launch so low that I have gone with some stiff dynamic gold Mids in 115 and its correcting my launch, spin, grouping, and slightly left starting line. It just goes to show how much can change in two years as your game develops and the impact the right shafts do have.

Sometimes it is the equipment and not just you, but only at a finer level

  21. I’ve noticed a couple things along my journey. Stiff steel target range is 110 to 115. Currently have c taper lite 110 stiff in t100’s. Graphite is lighter by 5-10 grams but also totally different flex at 105x but I’ve also had to add lead tape to the head of the 770s to make up swing weight. Not sure why it’s worked out this way but it is what it is. The 770 set has 105x all the way to my wedges just because certain ones I’ll full swing but for the main reason continuity through the whole bag as far as feel.

  22. Just been fit by the same guy who fit me 5 years ago. He put me in reg 95g back then now he’s put me in stiff 120g, i’m 5 years older, slower and I struggle with swinging 5&6 with these Project 5.5. Ruined my swing. Guess he was trying to tighten my dispersion but he’s screwed me up.

  23. Trottie, I’m a believer in fitting, but I’m a little confused. Had 2 fittings in the last 2 months. Currently have R flex, 105 gram shafts. I’m 60 years old with a 75mph swing with 7 iron. One fitter wants me in a kbs max 55 gram shaft, the other fitter wants me in a 75 gram pgi shaft and is certain a 55g is to light. I’m more confused than ever?

  24. I’m struggling at launching for long irons, aside from switching to either hybrids or woods, lighter shafts is also an option?

  25. Little off subject here, but want to know what is the first thing you see that causes you to adjust lie angle? Dynamic lie, ball flight, overall quality of strike? Or something else.

  26. I went tensei 1k black 65x in driver and 75x in 5 wood with no loss in speed launch and distance but now have tighter dispersion. The force of impact is now greater with the heavier shafts.

  27. I had an iron fitting at golftec today and the fitter told me that the weight and flex of the shaft would not have a significant effect on launch angle or spin rate… I'm a low spin player and my 7 iron spin is around 5200, I should have left when the first shaft he had me try was a shaft that said low spin on the side lol
