With the way youth sports are blowing up in the Amarillo area, it seems every sport has increased participation. The number of teams is increasing across the board, more kids are playing multiple sports, and the overall scene is healthier than it’s been in a long time.
However, there is one sport that doesn’t seem to get the love and looks that a lot of the team sports get. It’s not for lack of options to play it or get kids interested in it; it just isn’t one of those sports offered by places.
Youth Golf Needs More Love
Golf is one of those sports that many people enjoy playing, but the majority of those people are like me. No professional aspirations (ok, for a SHORT time I did), not in it for anything serious. We just want to go out, see if we can maintain a beer per hole average, and enjoy the day.
Well, there are plenty of kids out there intrigued by the sport and show an interest in wanting to play it, but it’s not as easy as signing up for a Kids, Inc. program, because there aren’t any places that offer golf as a sport to sign up for. Part of that is equipment, as you’d need a TON of sets of clubs to be able to offer something like that. So, how can kids get involved in this great game?
Opportunities For Kids
There are a couple of ways to help your kiddo get involved in golf if you’re so inclined. One way is to just take them out to a course, let them knock some balls around the putting green as you teach them proper technique. It’s like playing mini golf without the obstacles, and the best part is that it’s free to do. Wanna spend a few bucks? Get a bucket of balls and hit the driving range.
Once they show a propensity for the game, you can take them to a summer camp for the game. There are several offered in Amarillo; you just have to search a little. Golf Headquarters usually does some stuff and will know about things going on. There are also classes offered in the fall and spring around town. So grab them a set of clubs, and let them go play!
