As we take a look at the tail of the tape, you see the measurables in favor of Joshua Pagan at 510. And with a 72 in reach, Malik Montgomery coming up to a new weight class, coming in light, suggesting that he took camp and nutrition very seriously this time around. Will it be a rebirth for Malik Montgomery or another heroic homecoming for Joshua Pagan? Okay, guys. Remember, protect yourself and respect like gloves and God bless both of you. All right, let’s go. Well, prior to his first career loss to Jeremy Hill last time out, the only fighter at 130 lbs in box top 100 who had a higher KO percentage than Malik Montgomery was Sugar Nunees. Joshua Pagan tonight looking to become maybe the first male homegrown contender built right here on Big Time Boxing USA. Round one, this one scheduled for 10. And this is just what we thought it would look like. Just like Montgomery said, he’s going to jump on him right off the bat. And that’s what he did. He met him halfway and uh he’s already got him on the ropes and that’s why he’s that’s his fight. That’s where he’s gonna he wants to keep him there. Pagan needs to keep his cool. Fight smart. Tie him up. Don’t give him what he wants. Remember Malik Montgomery, a guy who when he’s healthy, when he’s energetic, he can easily eclipse a 100 punches in a round. Gone. Jabbing up and down. Nice three-punch combination. The first two didn’t land, but the left hook did. And a nice right hand down the middle there from Pagan. Zapagon last time out Hall of Fame weekend against James Bernardine. Man needs to invest in some body shots too to break them. I’m curious to see how the, you know, the fight goes on and throwing some bonds at close quarters. Both of the guys landing some uppercuts and hooks, but good combinations right there for fight his way out of that predicament. Do you think do you think the tempo that we’re seeing this round unfold at and maybe the the lack of tempo? I think it slowed down a little bit, but you think it’s because of the cut? I I I No, maybe the cut, but more Pagan smartness, you know, his movement and him trying to control the fight at mid and long range and giving him angles like that. Beautiful pot shot right hand there from Pagan between Joshua Pagan and Malik Montgomery. But that round three looked like Raul, a blueprint of what I’m sure Pagan would like this fight to look like. Exactly. I mean, it it took him a couple of rounds. I mean, you know, is a Montgomery, you know, was fresh at the beginning. He was able to fight two rounds like that, but it looks like, well, just what I thought. I thought Pagan was gonna take over and be able to really control through it. Pagan to this point in his career hasn’t again been that one punch kind of guy, but I I think we’re going to take a look at this cut and this fight could be in danger of being stopped. Raul, I believe so. I mean, it’s and I’m telling you, Montgomery knew that. That’s why he was up in his uh punch output. Looks like the doctor will let it go. It was a contemplative look from the official as that cut just continues to pour down the face of Malik Montgomery. Good uppercut on the inside and Montgomery just missed. Dangerous looking left hook. Well, as much as the crowd is enjoying it here, there’s a little bit of a hush in the crowd, I think, because of how brutal this looks. Exactly. Exactly. a really fun action fight and it’s almost like concern that we’re hearing from the audience here. Wow. Both guys. You got flurries from Pagan. You got some flurs from Montgomery. You can see the sweat and the blood. Every time Pagan lands those flurries, it rattles it. literally rattles Montgomery and you see like blood and sweat go up in the air. Look at this battle on the inside right in the middle of the ring. Just an Oklahoma drill right on top of the Celita Promotions logo. And the blood splattering all over the place here in San Juan. And a little bit of momentum here from Malik Montgomery. Where is this coming from? That’s the kind of comeback that he needs from out of nowhere. Malik Montgomery starting to pour it on Joshua Pagan. Is Pagan hurt? The fight’s still going on with the cut. The doctor obviously very being very helpful to Malik Montgomery. I mean, justifiably so. He’s still in the fight. He had Pagan hurt last round. Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. I mean, and there’s three rounds left. I mean, I I I would assume there for Pagan, though. Another one. Two in a row. But back comes Montgomery. That’s what Pagan is at his best, you know, like on his toes flowing in and out back and forth. Paganis is fighting very smart here. He’s he’s he’s boxing. He’s moving. He’s he’s sticking moving in and out. That’s good angles, changing levels. Catching them coming in. You know what surprises me too, Cory? the the cut has not really given Montgomery any pro. It’s not like it’s going in his eye. It’s it’s on the side. So, it’s not it’s not stopping his vision. It looks like it’s kind of anywhere. We’re right there. Anywhere and everywhere. Yeah. Look at the heart of Montgomery. Blood splattering across our camera lens as they head back to the corners. Pagan thinking about that uppercut again. And Raul, as you know, an uppercut sometimes can be a risky shot, but the way that Pagan does it. He throws it safely. He kind of has his shoulder against his opponent. He can throw it in a way that he’s not putting himself in danger. Yeah, he’s in the right distance. He’s measuring the distance. And that is it. This one will finally be waved off. The referee has seen enough. Enough brutality for the official and Joshua Pagaz celebrates here in Puerto Rico. We’re going to take a look back at the moment this one was stopped. And there’s that uppercut. And again, you know, you could have justified a stoppage in this fight because the cut, not because of the effort of Malik Montgomery, but if you’re looking out for the welfare of the fighter, about potential vision issues in the future. You have to have watched the fight to understand that kid lost a lot of blood and for the last 3 rounds Pagan had settled in and was making it look easy at that point the ref saw it was pointless to let him keep taking them shots
There was nothing wrong with the stoppage. Montgomery was taking too much damage and the referee saw enough if anything the doctor should’ve stopped it sooner. Pagan was outboxing him and he deserved the win, but full respect to Montgomery he’s a warrior 🥊
