While these signs strongly advise pedestrians to stay off cycling trails for safety, the legal situation is more complex.

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CROW Act) gave the public a new legal right of access to “open access land” in England and Wales. This land primarily includes mountain, moor, heath, and downland, and much of the land managed by Forestry England falls under this category. This means that, by law, the public has a right to walk on this land.

Therefore, while a sign with a crossed-out person is a critical safety warning and should be respected, it does not always represent a legal prohibition. It’s a way for Forestry England to manage risk and guide people towards safer, more suitable walking routes.

This reality highlights a significant challenge for forest management: balancing public access rights with the need for user safety.

I have my opinions on this and clearly not everyone agrees, which is absolutely fine as is your right to agree or disagree. I’m not changing my opinion on the response I got but clearly the signage is not as clear cut as it first appeared.

[Music] And here we have a perfect example of the no helmet brigade starting their summer holidays. The trip to QMC. They’re not really going on the uh low are they bike trail this bit mate. Yeah. Cheers, mate. It’s a bike trail this mate. Not walking. Says not advised. Not not to. Well, I’ll get it then. Bet the M1 says not advisable for pedestrians, but you would take your kids on it, would you? Welcome to the school holidays.

  1. Guess who was the "territorial" idiot while a nice family was just having fun…fracking hooligans you see one you see them all…why didn't the Brit girls got ya all extinct over the aeons is beyond me!

  2. Mind your own business. No helmet is none of your business. Human walking on a path none of your business. One day, someone will knock you down and kick you in. You deserve it.

  3. Just be happy, that you have so nice trails.
And try to be kind. Say hello and smile, you will get the same in response. It would make your and their day so much nicer.

  4. They’re walking with their kids, who are on their bikes. Perhaps instead of being miserable and judging everyone that you encounter on the trail, you could accept that other people exist and be thankful that you get to ride at all… ❤

  5. Not advised is not advised! It does not say ‘exclusively for bikes’. Any complaints? See those that manage the signs rather than verbally abuse families!
    😊

  6. Not very often I agree with a cyclist but on this occasion I do, if I seen this sign common sense would kick in and I'd not go down it, fully knowing bikers will be coming flying down. I agree the sign should state not prohibited rather than not advised but it's clear as day this is a bike trail with how the path is carved out.

  7. Been cycling for 60 years never worn a helmet. Live and let live it doesn’t say no walking your attitude stinks and if they booped u I would not blame them – from a cyclist

  8. Looked like a beautiful day for a ride. You were inconvienced for a few seconds. Don't see why it would bother you so much that you needed to post a video about it. You being a karen.

  9. The amount of people here arguing that the guy on the bike is in the wrong is astounding 😂
