You’ve been told to rotate… but what if that’s only half the story? How do tour level golfers use an invisible to hit it so good?
In this video, we break down the real forces behind Tour-level power — and why elite players don’t just turn through the ball… they pull away from it.
Using a hammer throw analogy, we reveal how pros create speed by ripping against an invisible “ball of power,” combining rotational, vertical, and backward pulling forces. It’s not just rotation — it’s the torque between your body and the ground that fuels explosive speed and compression.
We’ll show you how to visualize this “force orb,” how setup influences force creation, and how amateurs lose power by misunderstanding cause and effect.
Forget what you’ve heard — this is how real power works.

David Thompson on the screen. He was in contention this weekend. And what a swing this gentleman has. And if I could grow up to be like anybody on tour, it might be this one. Very Willabberish. And a couple of members here had reached out to me and says, “Hey, I watched a couple of your older videos and you talked about this power ball. What is this power ball?” So, we’re going to kind of reintroduce this to some of the newer followers, but the power ball basically is what I look at it how the forces are reacting in the golf swing. But there are 19 total forces. And I made a video on this about uh 3 or 4 months ago. So if you want to go check out my channel, just type in forces or 19 forces. It’ll pop up. But the main ones we’re looking at is rotational and basically vertical up and down. That’s the ones that you should be focusing on if you want to focus on. So that yellow circle will represent that power ball. Now, what does that power ball stem from? So basically stems from your setup. And where you set up, you basically start your power ball. Now, if you’re fighting waiting forward or back, you better find a way to compensate that to make sure your power ball is just staying where it is because if that power ball shifts, all of a sudden your forces are not being utilized correctly. Now, I’d kind of dissect this power ball into four areas. So, obviously, we have some vertical forces where you’re going up and down, but then you also have forces going back and forward. Now, your setup could affect these forces before you even swing, which is why I’m always in favor of starting people off with neutral everything. Neutral grip, neutral setup, and then basically look at how the swing evolves from there. But for those who are already deep into their golf swing journey, this is where your compensations occur. If you start on your toes, you’re either going to have a very toebased swing where you compensate that or you’re going to find a way to fight that weighting to allow your forces to be utilized correctly. Imagine a golfer is holding onto a chain with like a heavy ball at the end of it, just like the Olympic throw, hammer throw. So, the goal in that sport is to generate your maximum rotational speed as fast as you can while keeping that chain tighter and tighter. The tighter you can make that chain, the more potential energy you can deliver down to the golf ball. So, we see a lot of tour pros are able to keep that chain chain pretty tight because they’re staying in their posture. Where we lose it is we start to shaft hump. we start to get that chain to be looser as we get closer to the ball and all of a sudden we’ve lost so much potential energy. So when I see that power ball in my mind, I’m looking at the way the body moves and the way its positions and the tilting and turning and it’s basically trying to tear that orb into two directions at once. One is rotational and the other one is the compression vertical and upward. And one way to tear it with rotation is we make sure the body is keeping that back brace. And you want to basically feel like you’re ripping this power ball in half. Lower body is going this way. And to counteract that, as the lower body goes this way, the hands go this way. So that’s why the hands raise up slightly at impact because we’re moving away and we’re reaching a little bit higher. But then we have to get our tilting to get a little bit more and we have to bend down further. Make sure our hands are compensating each other. So there’s a lot of compensations occur. Number two is the compression of this little ball. So, as we trying to pull that ball aside, we’re also trying to compress it down. Now, the more we can compress it down, the more we can pull it aside. They just work hand in hand. So, that compression, let me just clear these lines up. That compression is the upper body is going to be working down while the lower body works up. So, essentially, we’re compressing this and we’re ripping it in two. So, we’re just going to squeeze and blow it out. Kind of like a night after Taco Bell. Did I just say that? We’re just gonna frame his body, right? So, we’re gonna put kind of like a little box around his head and then the framing of his lower body and upper body. Gonna cut them in half. We’re going to do a little David Co David Copperfield. And what we’re going to take a look at is watch from the top of the swing. Look at the upper body. Upper body is going to go down. And that is assisted by his squatting as well. So, it’s not necessarily the upper body bowing down. The whole body is going down. Now, he’s going down and he’s eventually going to do what? Jump back up. But look at how much the lower body is staying down while watch the legs. The legs are going to drive up. So there’s that compression. Remember the power balls there. We’re trying to compress this way. Number two, look at the back. Look at the little butt back there is sticking back over that line. It’s very so slight, but at worst, he’s maintaining his posture as he strikes it. He’s still maintaining his posture. He’s down. He’s compressing. And he’s pulling that that power ball apart. Now, if you take a look at the longest drivers on tour and the longest drivers in the world, both ladies and men, you take a look at that left foot action. That left foot is spinning back here because they’re pulling so hard. I’ve seen long drive guys start here and finish with their back brace over here because they’re just pulling as hard as they can back. But it takes a lot of timing, a lot of talent, strength, coordination. Clearly something that a majority of us don’t have or else we wouldn’t be on YouTube looking for the secret. Third little secret by the way. Hope that helps you. See you next time and green. A huge thank you to these incredible supporters on the screen and to you watching this video. Do you rotate… or pull away? Drop what you feel in your swing 👇
Shaft humper here!
First!!
😂Taco Bell reference hit the truth
What a swing that is! I remember a certain someone talking about a 'turning weight transfer' in his book. I've misinterpreted it and a fault I'm always fighting is swaying too much off the ball at the start, worried about reverse pivoting . And of course you can't rotate enough unless you're an Olympic gymnast! I'll be checking out your power ball video! Great instruction as always 👍🏻
Power ball? I do not know of this. Power balls, ask my wife.
BOOM. ROSTED.
That is a great swing. I rotate with an ever so small hip bump. I try to keep the variables to a minimum. Lets me hit a pretty straight ball.
Definitely push back with right leg to start the backswing then back and up for the downswing. My hips hurt just thinking about rotating.
I pull. Way too much and my hands fall behind. IDK if that’s what you meant.
I think I pull away but sometimes leave the club behind and have to try and save it with the hands causing a bit of a hook at times
i also love your comments etc on other YouTube coaches I would love your thoughts on this short or his coaching https://www.youtube.com/shorts/oLh1iNdu1yo
Looks like one of those swings he'll be adjusting in a couple more years after back pain though.
