Struggling with consistency on the golf course or rushing your swing? This might be the fix. In this video, PGA Golf Coach Georgia Ball shares the exact tempo change that completely transformed her swing – helping her gain better rhythm, balance, and strike quality without making any mechanical changes.
Most golfers swing too fast without realising it, especially under pressure. Georgia breaks down how one simple mental cue, paired with two tempo drills, can instantly improve your golf ball-striking, timing, and overall consistency. This isn’t about changing your swing – it’s about unlocking the one thing that brings it all together: tempo.

Hey I’m Georgia Ball, welcome to my channel! I’ve created my YouTube channel to help you get better at golf, but most of all enjoy the journey and have fun on the course with videos uploaded weekly.
I am a PGA Professional golf coach who has played golf for almost two decades and on this channel you will see me play on some of the best courses in the world, equipment reviews, going head to head with other golfers and plenty of tips to improve your game.
One of my main goals on this channel is to make you play better golf by uploading plenty of videos on a range of coaching topics such as golf lessons, how to drive the golf ball longer, golf tips, golf drills, how to hit your irons better, how to fix your slice, how to fix your hook and how to hit your irons closer to the hole. Not to mention all the help you need to hole more putts.
Everything changed when I started doing this in my golf swing. Like many golfers, I always thought that I needed the perfect technique and some kind of secret move within the swing to make me a good golfer. But when I focused on this one thing, which was tempo, my game rapidly improved. So, I’m going to show you today how you can do the same. Before we get started, if I could just ask one favor, and it’ be hit that subscribe button. It takes a second to do. It means you’ll get better at golf and you’ll help the channel massively. So, thank you so much and hit subscribe. What is tempo and why is it so important? Now, tempo is one of those things that I just think is hugely overlooked. I’ve watched many golf swings over the years. And tempo you may not think you’re doing wrong, but a lot of the time golfers either rush and the swing goes out of tempo. And that can be the reason why your shots are going left, right, duffed, thinned before you’ve even hit the ball. And what is tempo? Tempo is allowing the body to move in correct sequence. If your tempo is out, then the hips, the arms, the body will work incorrectly. Now, if you can focus on a smooth tempo and really dialing this in in your swing, then honestly, that’s when my game just improves so much. Again, many golfers who I’ve watched over the years wouldn’t even consider tempo when it comes to the swing. They ask me what they’re doing wrong, they hit, I watch the swing back with them, and they realize, “Oh, I swung that fast. I didn’t even give myself time to finish my back swing.” and straight away the tempo’s off. And again, that’s the reason why they’re hitting it inconsistent. And that’s not to say that you need to swing fast, but we need to swing controlled. And control comes with tempo. So, let’s get straight into how you can improve your tempo. The best way of me describing this to you, and you may have seen me do this before, because it’s the best drill to help you feel this because some people can’t grasp it and just can’t quite understand what tempo should feel like. So, it’s called the one, two, three drill. I do it all the time within my practice. And again, this is what helped me skyrocket my game. All we need to do, it’s quite simple, and it’s something that you can tell yourself in your mind without other people actually noticing you doing it. So, all we need to think is swing up to the top of our back swing in beat one, two, and then three is our down swing. So see how our back swing is a lot more controlled and then our down swing is one. So it goes a little something like one, two, three, one, two, three. And you can see this allows me to finish my back swing. I’m getting a full rotation and I’m not getting too quick and snappy. A lot of golfers I see take so much time on the back swing, lovely tempo, and then just rush it and lose it. They haven’t even got to the top of the swing. So, in this one, other thing you want to think of is allow the body now to work in correct sequence because it’s all great in saying we’re going to go one, two, three, but if I’ve not used my lower half and I’ve just let my arms hang, then that’s when I’m going to lose distance. Okay? So we want to think one, two, all the way to the top. As we reach the top of our back swing, we want to allow the lower half to go first hip bump rotate and then let the upper half follow. And then that’s what takes us into the next drill. So the next drill is called the stepping drill. Again, you will have seen me do this before because it’s such a good drill for tempo, but also for weight transfer and compression. So, what this looks like is feet together. Take your stance. Bring this front foot next to our trail foot. All we’re going to do again, we’re going to think one, two to the top. But before we reach the top of our back swing, we’re going to step down. Okay. So, one, two, three. It’s tricky to do with the tough one, but if you can master this, you’re not only going to have crisper shots, you’re going to have great divots and you’re going to have good timing. So again, feet together on this side. We’re going to go one, two, three. Okay, so as we almost reach one, two, step, three. Just look, the lower half has turned. The upper half has just got so much room to turn. Okay, once more. One, two, three. Allow the club to reach the top of the back swing. Two, step three. And then that takes us onto our third and final drill, which is the feet together drill. This is one that only requires a short swing, less speed because if you do this wrong, then you’re going to tipple over, but it’s really good again to help you feel that you’re rotating correctly, you’re getting correct tempo, and in the long run, as we’ve just mentioned, you’re going to have great compression, and you’re going to have great strikes. So, all this requires is feet together. Take half a swing to start because if you get this wrong, as I say, you’re gonna move. So, we think swing with our feet together. Okay. All you need to do here is make some practice swings. Again, a nice short swing. Try now and hit the same spot every time on your practice swing. Okay? So, if you come in closer to the ball, you’ll see ideally we actually want to hit after the ball. So rather than making contact with the ground here, we’re going to aim to actually hit the ground here. Quite strange, but again, not only is this going to improve tempo, you’re going to be striking the ball a lot better. Again, feet together, just some nice swings. Really try and catch the same little bit of ground every time. Okay. If I was to lose tempo, go too quick, I’m going to tipple back. And if I go way too fast on my back swing, I’m going to topple forward. So, nice controlled one, two, one, two. Hit the same piece of grass every time. If you can master those three drills, that’s what I did personally. I’ve never played better golf than I have right now. And I just feel like I need to share this with you because if you can stand over the ball and think of your target and tempo, then it’s going to take any overthinking out. It’s going to think any swing work that we’re we’re thinking of out of your game completely. And you’re going to have so much confidence because if you’re just thinking smooth tempo, that actually takes the ball out of play. You don’t even need to think about hitting the ball. just think smooth tempo and trust me it’s helped my game so much. So I’m going to hit a few balls with my nine iron just to show you how I’m feeling over the shot. But this is also the same for a fairway wood a driver. You still want to feel that smooth tempo. You’re going to find yourself hitting the ball further because you’re going to release the power at the right time because the body’s working in sequence. Okay. So, I’m thinking if I was playing this shot, I’m just thinking of I’ve gone through my pre-shot routine. I’m over the ball. I’m just thinking one, two, three. One, two, three. Again, I do this on the practice ground on the driving range. Really just takes any overthinking out and the success rate is high. So firstly going from front on just so you can see how this looks. Remember one, two, three. One, two, three. If you feel like your tempo is getting too quick, exaggerate. Two, three. Because if you feel like you’re holding it for half a second, you’re probably going pretty fast. So some days where I feel like I need to feel my tempo more, I think one, two, three. It just frees up the whole body. And I just wish you could give this a try cuz it’s so good. That felt really nice. Again, it just helps me so much with control swinging. It actually takes the first two nerves away and it just helps me focus on being present and just hit great shots. So, next time you’re out on the golf course, try and think tempo as your only swing thought when you’re over the ball. Take out any negative thoughts, any out of bounds, any left or right or trunk shots. Think tempo and just see how good your shots become. And if you took value away from this video, I would really appreciate it if you could hit subscribe. Like I said, it takes one second to do. It means you’ll get better at golf every time, and you’ll be helping the channel out massively. So, thank you so much. I hope you enjoyed, and I’ll see you in the next video.
