LIV filed for bankruptcy, terminating Cameron Smith’s contract. Now, the former champ expects more answers to stick around with LIV Golf.
Back in April, the PIF withdrew its funding for LIV, leaving the league in investment turmoil. Now, LIV has filed for bankruptcy, and Smith expected more clarity.
“(We’re) in a bit of a limbo … we don’t really know,” Smith said. “It’s hard to make a decision when you don’t have at least some of the answers to make the right decision, or (any) decision. We need a few more answers.”
As a result of filing for bankruptcy, the existing players’ contracts have been terminated. The LIV management is working towards the creation of the new player-owned “LIV 2.0” model.
Smith faces a 12-month PGA Tour suspension, narrowing his options. His only option remains the DP World Tour or, as he himself pointed out, clinging to LIV.
“I guess that’s one way; the other way is (staying with) LIV,” Smith added, per Reuters’ report.
In fact, Smith is featuring at this week’s Dunhill Links Championship in St Andrews. He also teed off at last week’s FedEx Open de France, missing the cut.
Smith has been in a winless slump and shed some light on that.
Pressure mounts as Smith chases first win in three years
A three-year winless drought weighs on Smith, who addressed it directly.
“Every sportsperson in history has been criticised for something,” Smith said, as reported by FOX Sports’ Dane Heverin. “I know I haven’t played my best golf the last couple of years. It eats at you a little bit, and you try to get out of the slump.”
Smith’s last win on LIV came at the 2023 LIV Golf Bedminster, a one-stroke victory over Indian Anirban Lahiri.
The LIV man’s last win on the PGA Tour was the 2022 Open Championship, which gave him a five-year exemption at the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and exempt through age 55 at the Open.
Smith will need to figure out his future playing schedule first and then end his winless slump.
