The 2025 Ryder Cup will remain with Team Europe as they beat their American arch-rivals on a thrilling final day in New York.

Shane Lowry was the hero for the tourists when he sank the putt to secure Europe’s 14th point of the Ryder Cup to guarantee Europe would retain.

With the Ryder Cup retained, Tyrrell Hatton made sure it would be an outright victory for Europe with a two-putt on the 18th to tie his singles match against Collin Morikawa.

Europe’s victory at Bethpage Black came after team skipper Luke Donald steered his side to a dominant win over the USA in Rome in September 2023.

The win in Rome brought the Ryder Cup back into Europe’s grateful hands after the Americans enjoyed a one-sided victory in Whitstling Straits two years prior.

The last Ryder Cup was filled with drama and controversy off the course as well as a host of world-class action on it.

The home side has had a distinct advantage in recent tournaments, but Europe, spearheaded by Grand Slam champion Rory McIlroy, will hope to change that this weekend.

And with the raucous crowds of Farmingdale, New York and the brutal test at Bethpage Black, golf fans are in for a treat this week.

Europe were utterly dominant over the first two days, to the point that fans have been selling Ryder Cup tickets at a $450 loss.

McIlroy and Co. have claimed a seven-point lead after winning each and every session so far.

However, the US team gave Europe an almighty scare as they won six of the singles matches on Sunday.

Yet Ludvig Aberg’s victory coupled with five tied matches was enough for the visitors to hold on for a famous win.

The 45th edition of the Ryder Cup is taking place from Friday, September 26, to Sunday, September 28.

It is being held at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.

The pairings for each session will be confirmed shortly before the matches are scheduled to begin.

The PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe confirmed their teams in August with both deciding to have six automatic qualifiers and six captain’s picks.

The 2011 US Open champion Keegan Bradley, who is only 39 years old, is skippering the USA and being helped by vice-captains Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker and Gary Woodland.

Bradley was in the unusual position of being highly touted to pick himself but decided against it.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler leads the team alongside rookies JJ Spaun, Russell Henley, Ben Griffin and Cameron Young.

Meanwhile, Europe are led by Donald again and his vice-captains Thomas Bjorn, Edoardo Molinari, Alex Noren, Jose Maria Olazabal and Francesco Molinari.

The European team are made up of 11 of the 12 men who played in Rome with only Rasmus Hojgaard replacing his twin brother Nicolai.

Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy is the star man but Europe’s squad is packed with top talent yet again.

A total of 28 points are up for grabs at the Ryder Cup and each team must reach 14½ to claim victory.

The competition is held over three days with three different disciplines – the foursomes, the fourballs and the singles.

Friday and Saturday will see four morning foursome (alternate shot) matches and four afternoon fourball (better ball) matches take place before Sunday’s 12 singles matches.

Each match is worth one point while any match that is tied after 18 holes will see both teams earn half a point.

Should the tournament finish 14-14, the team who won the previous edition will retain the trophy.

Every player will play in the Sunday one-on-one matches but the pairs for the other matches will be announced by the captains shortly before each session.

The weather conditions were good in New York to begin the week, but the threat of thundery showers forced organisers into a last-minute change.

Due to the forecast of inclement weather, the Opening Ceremony for the event was moved forward from Thursday to Wednesday.

The All-Star Celebrity Match also took place on Wednesday.

The weather for the tournament itself will improve each day.

Friday was mostly overcast with temperatures of around 23C and a chance of rain in the morning.

Saturday will be similar but with a lower risk of rain while Sunday will be sunny throughout with temperatures of 26C.

Ryder Cup 2025: The course

Bethpage Black will play to a par 70 and a daunting length of 7,401 yards.

The infamous New York track is known to be one of the most brutal in the world and even comes with a warning on the first tee of ‘The Black Course is an extremely difficult course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers’.

It has held three major championships – most recently the 2019 PGA Championship, which was won by Brooks Koepka.

At that tournament, only six players finished the week under par while Andrew Filbert, a PGA Assistant Professional from Florida, missed the cut at 26-over for the opening two days.

While it has been set up slightly easier for the Ryder Cup than major championship weeks, Bethpage Black will still be a demanding test with its narrow fairways, deep roughs, and heavy bunkering.

Many matches could be decided on the 15th hole which is nicknamed ‘The Beast’.

Europe captain Donald spoke of his pride in his team after a successful Friday at Bethpage Black.

He said: “I am very proud. We knew the US were going to be tough but they have really thrived in this tough environment. It has been loud out here.

“They know the plan and it is good to see them sticking to it.”

McIlroy said: “I’ve been looking forward to doing this again since that last putt dropped in Rome.
