Christine Wang shot a 3-under 68 to cap off a stellar week at the Golf Club of Avon and capture the Hartford Healthcare Women’s Championship on Sunday. It’s Wang’s first professional win.
The 24-year-old from Texas shot 13-under for the tournament, outlasting Malaysia’s Mirabel Ting by one shot. Wang is in her second year of professional golf on the Epson Tour, and came into the event with just one top-10 finish on the season.
The win in Avon moved her up 63 spots in the Epson Tour rankings, to 13th. The top 15 players in the rankings at the end of the season will move up to the LPGA.
Wang shot 5-under on Saturday to take over the tournament lead. She capped the round with an eagle on 18.
“Originally, I was going to hit driver (on 18), but then I felt like the slightest breath of air behind me, and I was like, you know what? I am playing pretty well,” Wang told the tour’s Carly Haines. “There are a lot of people watching me. I love people watching. I’m pretty amped right now. So maybe I’ll hit three wood just to be a little safer. I didn’t think it was going to get on the green, but I guess I smoked it, because it got on the green. And then had this 35-foot putt for eagle. Just felt really good looking at it right when I set up to it and then, yay.”
Her round Sunday went similarly as she held off Ting, an Epson Tour rookie who’s ranked in the top 10, and Kaleiya Romero, No. 2 on the tour.
This was the first year the Hartford Healthcare Women’s Championship was held in Avon, as it had been at Milford’s Great River Golf Club in 2023 and ’24. It is the only major women’s professional golf event held in Connecticut.
