HESPERIA, Calif. (VVNG.com) — Flooding from storm conditions has caused widespread road closures, stranded vehicles, and swiftwater rescues throughout Hesperia and surrounding areas on Wednesday.
As of 10 a.m. on Dec. 24, Arrowhead Lake Road was closed at the golf course. Motorists were advised to use I Avenue and Peach Avenue as alternate routes.
By 11:45 a.m., additional street closures were reported across the city due to flooding. The following roads were closed at that time:
Live Oak Street from Datura Road to Mt. Shasta Drive
Third Avenue at Mauna Loa Street
Eucalyptus Street between Maple Avenue and Primrose Avenue
Shangri La Avenue at Eucalyptus Street
Maple Avenue from Eucalyptus Street to Sycamore Avenue
Sunset Street at Maple Avenue
Walnut Street between Hickory Avenue and Cottonwood Avenue
Orange Street between Hickory Avenue and Cottonwood Avenue
Santa Fe Avenue East between Lemon Street and Mauna Loa Street
Lemon Street between Santa Fe Avenue East and C Avenue
E Avenue between Lemon Street and G Avenue
Lemon Street between G Avenue and I Avenue
G Avenue between E Avenue and Lemon Street
Orchid Avenue between Eucalyptus Street and Lilac Street
Choiceanna Avenue between Covina Street and Choiceanna Court
E Avenue between Alston Avenue and Bangor Avenue
Ash Street between Alston Avenue and Bangor Avenue
Allthorn Street between Alston Avenue and Bangor Avenue
Joshua Street between Alston Avenue and Bangor Avenue
Mission Street between Alston Avenue and Bangor Avenue
In addition to the city closures, many dirt roads in the unincorporated areas of Hesperia were also flooded, leaving numerous vehicles stuck in mud and flowing water. On Mesquite Street just off Mariposa Road, a tractor-trailer attempted to cross a wash and became stuck.
Major highways in the area were also impacted. Eastbound Highway 138 was closed at the 15 Freeway in the Cajon Pass. Highway 138 was also reported closed from State Route 173 near Silverwood Lake due to flooding conditions.
According to San Bernardino County Firefighters, fire crews are rescuing people trapped in vehicles and responding to an increase in swiftwater rescue calls, particularly in the Hesperia area and throughout the North Desert region.
Officials continue to urge drivers not to attempt to cross flooded roadways and reinforced the safety message, “Turn Around Don’t Drown.” Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
