Power and Smotherman set to duel it out for PGA Tour glory

Séamus Power and Austin Smotherman will return to Port Royal Golf Club to duke it out in a playoff for a PGA Tour victory after the decision was made to reduce the Butterfield Bermuda Championship to 54 holes.

Locked together at 16-under-par after the completion of Saturday’s round, stormy conditions on Sunday forced the suspension of the entire day’s play, and further inclement weather forecast for Monday forced the PGA Tour to conclude that there was no way the entire field would be able to complete 18 holes.

But with two tied at the top, in order to identify a clear winner, Waterford man Power and Texan Smotherman will contest a sudden-death playoff starting on the par-3 16th, then moving to the par-4 18th if additional holes are required, and the 18th will then be repeated until a winner emerges.

This is all subject to weather, of course, but all going well, the duo are scheduled to begin the playoff at 9:00 am local time (1pm Irish time) and will be broadcast on Sky Sports.

Power, who was scheduled to compete in the VidanteWorld Mexico Open starting on Thursday has subsequently withdrawn from the event with the FedExCup Fall points allocation he’ll receive even from a runner-up finish in Bermuda enough to guarantee that he’ll move comfortably inside the top 100 and regain full playing privileges for 2027.

The tournament winner will receive prize money of $1.08 million, with the runner-up earning $654,000. While Smotherman’s recent win at the Bank of Utah Championship has put him in a strong position going forward, an added incentive for Power is that victory would almost certainly earn him access to the first two PGA Tour Signature Events of 2027 and it would also bring an exemption into the 2028 Championship Series when the PGA Tour splits into a two-tier tour.
