Boca Raton is getting a new and improved skate park

As part of ongoing efforts to revamp a former golf course in Boca Raton, city officials are moving forward with plans for a new skate park.

The Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District unveiled a design for a skate park at North Park, the former Ocean Breeze golf course at Boca Teeca, just east of Interstate 95 and north of Yamato Road.

Plans to develop the eastern portion of North Park have been underway, including the rise of an indoor pickleball facility. According to a site plan, the park is intended to include many different recreational opportunities, including a mountain bike trail, general fitness areas and playgrounds.

“There’s a lot of amenities out there, a lot of green space, and we’re really returning that golf course to a nice, passive recreation space,” Greater Boca Raton Beach and Parks District Executive Director Briann Harms said in 2025.

Now, a design features more than 45,000 square feet for a skate park and pump track, which typically is a track for wheeled sports. The design came together after receiving feedback from “different types of riders,” parents and other community members, Harms said during a city meeting Monday.

A new skate park is needed to replace the city’s current one, Tim Huxhold Skate Park, at 400 Crawford Blvd. next to the city’s police station, Harms said.

The Tim Huxhold Skate Park is out of date, “small by today’s standards,” she said.

“A lot of things in recreation have evolved over the course of time, and kids are faster. There’s a lot more equipment that they’re using on wheels,” Harms said.

Several people, including entire families, came forward during Monday’s meeting to ask the council to support what they say is a much-needed facility for South Florida’s skating community.

“For kids my age, there aren’t always a lot of outdoor places where we can go and actually do something we enjoy. A skate park would give kids and teenagers a designated place to skateboard, ride bikes and ride scooters instead of using streets, sidewalks and parking lots,” Colby Wright, a 13-year-old resident, said at the meeting.

“Adults already have many recreational options in Boca Raton, and younger people should have a voice in what gets built here too, because we’re part of a community and we’re going to use the skate park for years to come. Please consider giving us a place designated for us.”

Also among the skate park supporters was 29-year-old Fabiana Delfino, a top professional skateboarder.

She and her professional skateboarder brother, Pedro Delfino, have been pushing for a new city skate park after having grown up skating at Tim Huxhold.

“It’s been just sad seeing it kind of get dilapidated over the years,” she said at Monday’s meeting. “It’s outdated and, most importantly, it’s inaccessible.

“So with this new skate park, it’s very exciting. I see a light in a lot of the young people. … This is a great example of how we could push Boca Raton into the future, and we need to make this, we need this addition.”

A couple of residents expressed concern for the skate park’s location.

“The skate park, I think, is a great idea. The only trouble is I think it’s in the wrong place,” one resident said at the meeting. “It’s isolated someplace where basically it’s not near any other sport that can be played.”

But more is set to accompany the skate park at North Park, such as a community garden, a playground and a dog park.

City Council members did not have to make any decisions about the skate park — as Harms said: “We do not need any moral action, just moral support.”

“It’s important to have everybody’s opinions in the same room,” Harms said later in the meeting. “We care about providing more recreation in the city.”
