No charges will be filed in connection with a fight between friends on The Quarry Golf Course that ended in a stabbing and with one of the disputants in the hospital, authorities said.
The San Antonio Police Department, which investigated the incident as a possible aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, said the case has been “closed pending further investigation.”
The department declined to elaborate on what it meant by “further investigation,” but the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office removed any doubt with a statement of its own.
“The San Antonio Police Department has officially closed the case,” and as a result, “it was not submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review,” the DA’s office told the San Antonio Express-News. “At this time, we have no further comments or information to share.”
The case stemmed from a July 25 altercation at The Quarry Golf Course, located in the 444 block of East Basse Road.
Police said a 37-year-old man got into a dispute with a 56-year-old man during a Saturday afternoon round of golf. The older man struck the younger man with a blunt object – by some accounts, a golf club – before stabbing him with a knife, according to SAPD.
The 37-year-old was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither man has been identified.
News footage of the incident shows that five SAPD patrol vehicles responded to the scene, and that officers handcuffed and detained one of the men.
The golf course management later described the altercation as “a dispute among long-term friends over a golf match.”
General manager Dustin Burell said after the incident that the course understood neither man intended to pursue charges. “I am thankful this was an isolated incident,” Burell said.
The DA’s office previously told the Express-News that a victim’s desire not to pursue charges does not prevent prosecution. Prosecutors may file charges anyway, based on the evidence.
The Quarry Golf Course is an 18-hole public championship course built into the site of a historic 1908 rock quarry. New memberships in Club Quarry cost $1,200 a year, and there is a 400-person waiting list, according to the golf course.
The course appears on a list of “distinguished golf destinations” compiled by BoardRoom magazine and Forbes Travel Guide.
