Tony Romo makes first public appearance since arrest

Tony Romo has been out of the public eye since his OWI arrest over the summer.

On Wednesday, Romo made what amounts to his first public appearance since his arrest, participating in a pre-qualifying event for the PGA Tour Q-School. Romo has participated in several semi-pro and professional golf events since retiring from his playing career in the NFL.

Tulsa CBS affiliate News on 6 shared photos and a video from Romo’s round at The Club at Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He finished his round in 76 strokes, putting him at four-over par heading into his round on Thursday.

Romo was arrested in Wisconsin this past July on suspicion of operating while intoxicated after performing poorly on field sobriety tests. He was reportedly back in his home state to take part in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament.

That arrest and the video of his field sobriety test that followed led to Romo being put on indefinite leave by CBS, with J.J. Watt taking the role of analyst alongside Jim Nantz in the network’s No. 1 NFL booth.

While Romo indicated in a statement that he was working towards an eventual return to CBS, the network has been less clear about the potential future of their partnership. Should Romo not return to CBS, he could find himself a free agent heading into the 2027 NFL season that could see quite a shake-up in broadcast booths across the sports media landscape.

Romo is set to tee off for the second round of the Q-School event at 3:40 p.m. on Thursday, needing to make up some ground over the next two days if he’s to advance to the First Qualifying Stage in late October.
