First Tee West Texas teaches children life skills on and off the golf course

MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) – First Tee West Texas is a children’s only golf program that focuses on golf and personal growth with the help of coaches in the community.

Coach Caroline started working for First Tee when she moved to Midland. She said she enjoys watching and helping children develop skills in golf and their personal lives.

“As they get going and start doing the lessons more and making friends, they really grow in their confidence, and they grow in their golf game as well, so it’s really fun to see that development,” Caroline said.

The Midland Lee High School golf team also practices at the golf course. Albert Seybert, head boys and girls golf coach at Midland Lee High School, said the children in the First Tee program are able to look at the high school athletes as role models.

“That’s what we want, the younger kids to look at these kids and aspire to be that. And to take those values, you know, honest, integrity, great attitude, and take those into life with them,” Seybert said.

First Tee welcomes students aged 7 through 18. Cristiano Medina, a First Tee student, said the program has helped him build connections.

“I love it here, I’ve met a bunch of great friends, I’ve met a bunch of great teachers, I’ve met honestly a lot of people in my life that have made a great impact on it,” Medina said.
