Kevin Sherrington’s A La Carte
— Scottie Scheffler received a nice note from Tiger Woods after Highland Park’s own passed him on the all-time money list with his second Tour championship, becoming only the third player to claim more than one in the process. Winnings, of course, make for a poor comparison, even if adjusted for inflation. Tiger and Jack Nicklaus remain the standards for any generation. Scottie’s the standard for this one, which should be more than enough for anyone.

— Get this: A man has been outed for pretending to be a Cowboy, and it wasn’t Mazi Smith.
— First TCU revoked the credentials of its hometown newspaper, then it doubled down on the national ridicule by making Bill Belichick a feel-good story. The school may have a legitimate gripe about the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s coverage of a football player’s assault, but there were better ways to handle it. Especially when your stadium is named after the paper’s former publisher.
— Sonny Dykes raised eyebrows last spring when he noted that his former TCU QB, Josh Hoover, now at Indiana, had 42 turnovers in 31 games. Hoover also hung 48 points on North Carolina last year. His Harvard replacement, Jaden Craig, managed 10. None of this will wear well, Sonny.
— Did you catch Belichick’s reaction to a game-clinching first down Saturday? Didn’t show that much emotion at his previous gig for any of his six Lombardis.
— Jaydon Blue may yet resurrect his career with the Cowboys or elsewhere, but it should be noted that, despite his gaudy skills, he couldn’t stay on the field at Texas, either.

— A good reason for the Cowboys to keep three QBs: Leaves you room to trade one, which was once a cottage industry for the organization.
— Unless the Rangers do something this fall they haven’t done all summer, it’s almost time to think about reinventing them. In their next iteration, how about a clubhouse full of guys who already know how to do all the things that, back in the day, even the 25th player knew instinctively?
— World Cups will come, and most, if not all, will raise the spirits of the world like no other sporting event. But whoever else is in charge from here on out will have to do it without Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. No matter what else comes, we’ll always be able to claim them.
Story time: TCU’s revocation of the FWST’s credentials reminds of the time when the same set of circumstances happened with yours truly, only in reverse.
The Beaumont Enterprise-Journal was the third stop on my newspaper climb, coming after the Pasadena Citizen and Galveston Daily News, mothership of the DMN. In Beaumont, as in Pasadena and Galveston, my primary beats were high schools. The difference was that every story you wrote for the morning Enterprise, you rewrote for the afternoon Journal. Made for good practice.

Anyway, one of my four high schools was Beaumont-Charlton-Pollard, coached by Duriel Harris, Sr., father of the great Dolphins receiver with the same name. The old man informed me on my first day that, because of jealousies that built up the year before, I would not be permitted to talk to any of his players. Only him.
Didn’t help matters that he was bad copy. I went along reluctantly. Finally, my boss, the late, great Joe Heiling, told me to tell Harris that if we couldn’t talk to his players, we wouldn’t write anything about BCP.
Meanwhile, the sports section was filled each day with stories about other area high schools.
The next time I went out to BCP, after a two-week boycott, the coach greeted me warmly.
“Who would you like to talk to?”

This is how we settled our differences back then, when the world was more civilized. I miss those days.
