Golf round-up as Scottie Scheffler secures a massive bonus ahead of the FedEx Cup Playoffs

With the 2026 majors in the rearview mirror, attention in the golf world has switched to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The majors were shared, with Rory McIlroy defending his Masters title in typically dramatic fashion.
Englishman Aaron Rai then secured a breakthrough triumph at the US PGA Championship before Wyndham Clark landed his second US Open crown.
The final major of the year produced a surprise winner in the shape of New Zealander Ryan Fox, whose final-hole birdie saw him hold off Cameron Young at Royal Birkdale.
Next up on the PGA Tour schedule is the first FedEx Cup Playoff event, the St Jude Championship, which begins on Thursday. That is followed by the BMW Championship and the big one, the Tour Championship, which was memorably won by Tommy Fleetwood last year. Here’s a round-up of the latest golf news…
Scheffler banks £7.4m
He may have missed out on a major title this year, but Scottie Scheffler goes into the FedEx Cup play-offs as the man to beat.
For the fourth season out of five, the world number one has topped the regular-season standings, earning him a handy £7.4m bonus. While money is ‘unofficial’ and doesn’t count towards his season’s earnings, it will soon reside in his bank account.
That is half of the bonus prize pool, worth almost £15m, which is shared among the top 10 at the end of the regular season. Scheffler was joined in the top 10 by Matt Fitzpatrick, Young, Clark, Chris Gotterup, Collin Morikawa, Si Woo Kim, Sam Burns, Fleetwood and Ludvig Aberg.

Star hits back
Michael Block has insisted he didn’t deserve to be disqualified from the PGA Seniors Championship.
The 50-year-old, who stole the show with a shock top-15 finish at the 2023 US PGA Championship, walked off the course 12 holes into his final round at Trump International Golf Links in Scotland.
Block had already been docked two shots for turning up late to his tee time. He admitted that particular sanction was fair, telling Golf Digest: “First time in my career [that’s happened] and it’s completely my fault.”

But he wasn’t happy to have the word ‘disqualified’ next to his name after claiming he tried to withdraw correctly, having been given a lift to the tournament office by someone he thought was an official. He also denied he was unhappy with course conditions.
He said: “I walked into the championship office to thank them for the week, but no one was there. I thought nothing of it, thinking that I had withdrawn correctly.
“But I guess the gentleman who gave me the ride [to the office] was not an official, so I was disqualified. To hear these accusations that I just walked off the course and that I was upset about the course conditions is absurd.”
