Shane Lowry has left himself in a strong position at the Irish Open after a course-record 62 on Friday left him top of the leaderboard on 11-under-par going into the penultimate day.

The Offaly man begins Saturday three shots ahead of the chasing pack, which is led by the Danish pair of Niklas Norgaard Moller and Jacob Skov Olesen and China’s Li Haotong, who are all on eight-under.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy struggled on the greens on Friday and trails his close friend and Ryder Cup teammate by nine shots going into Saturday.

However, fellow Co Antrim man Tom McKibbin had a much better time of things on day two as a 67 left him three shots ahead of McIlroy and six behind Lowry.

Speaking after his round on Friday, Lowry told Sky Sports: “It was nice. It was real fun out there. I got off to a nice start and then I just kept my foot on the gas and tried to keep hitting good shots and keep holing putts and it was a nice day.

“The crowds were amazing out there today. They support me along the way and it was nice to give them something to shout about.”

The winner of the tournament will take home over $1million in prize money, while there are sum other big sums on offer for those who finish high up the leaderboard.
