After being the ‘nearly man’ on multiple occasions in recent years, 2024 was finally the year that Xander Schauffele broke his Major duct, winning a maiden title at the PGA Championship and then The Open Championship at Royal Troon.
Starting one shot adrift of the 54-hole leader, Schauffle fired a bogey-free round of 65 on the Ayrshire coast to convincingly outplay his challengers and secure the Claret Jug, two months after his record-breaking Valhalla triumph.
The Californian recorded a record lowest round at a major at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla. This means he is now the joint owner of Valhalla’s course record alongside Shane Lowry after they both beat Jose Maria Olazabal’s 24-year-old record by one shot. Xander became the third man to shoot 62 in a Major and the first man to make two 62s in Major history.
The Callaway staffer, who is now a Descente ambassador, has already notched up 12 top-10 finishes this season, including a top-10 finish at all four Majors in 2024.
In 2024, Schauffele finished runner-up twice, once in a tie for second at the Players Championship and in solo second at the Wells Fargo Championship. At the end of the 2023 season, he was beaten in a playoff at the Tour Championship by opposition Ryder Cup star Viktor Hovland.
In 2022, Xander shot his way to victory at the Genesis Scottish Open, his first Rolex Series title, and came just weeks after his victory at the 2022 Travelers Championship.
Schauffele, who’d also won the JP McManus Pro-Am event at Adare Manor, was in imperious form at The Renaissance Club as he won by one shot over fellow American Kurt Kitayama.
The American had waited three years for another solo title before his win at the Travelers, although he did win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside Ryder Cup teammate Patrick Cantlay earlier in 2022.
The 30-year-old, who won the men’s golf gold medal at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, went winless for the entire 2023 even though he managed to rack up just over $8.4 million in winnings for the season.
2024, however, was an entirely different scenario for our Californian native. While the year started with a mixed performance, notably during The Players, where three rounds of outstanding play were followed by a final 18 holes of missed opportunities that saw him overtaken to the Championship title by the indomitable coolness of Scottie Scheffler, Xander’s game was trending in the right direction.
Two months on from his TPC Sawgrass disappointment, Schauffele alleviated any insecurities that may have been levelled at his game by earning his first Major victory, the USPGA Championship, at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Xander’s wire-to-wire victory was sealed in style with a final round six-under 65, that no doubt removed some demons in his mind of being one of Golf’s newest nearly-men.
His doubters now quiet, Schauffele played his next four tournaments with a finish of nothing worse than T15th, including a T7th placing at a difficult US Open.
At The Open Championship, in the most treacherous conditions that Royal Troon could throw at a golfer, Xander produced another magnificent display as those around him faltered in the Scottish weather, shooting, as with the USPGA, another 65 on Sunday. The Champion Golfer of the Year earned his Claret Jug with a dogged performance to take his 2nd Major of the season, and of his career.
When it seemed like he was about to become another dominant force in the game, the 2025 season started with a setback for the now 2-time Major winner. Having suffered a December rib injury, Schauffele struggled through the opening tournament in Hawai’i, The Sentry, before deciding to take time out for recovery.
He returned at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March and has since managed five more starts, never truly challenging for the top spot. The good news is, however, that in his seven appearances this year, Xander has notched four Top 25 and one Top 10 with zero missed cuts, showing there’s plenty still there to be excited about.
Time became the deciding factor for his game at this point, with multiple majors and a Ryder Cup looming, with a simple case of waiting for everything to click back together being the only thing remaining for him to compete again.
