Takomo Skyforger 002 wedges — 50, 56 and 60 degree heads lined up on a fence rail

Takomo Skyforger 002 Wedge Review

This is Golfer Geeks’ Takomo Skyforger 002 wedge review.

I’m an avid golfer, 6ish handicap (on my way to a 2), and a frequent tester of golf clubs and golf products since 2015.

I’ve been playing the Skyforger 002 wedges, gap through lob, for at least two months. Multiple rounds on the course, a few range sessions, and a session or two on the launch monitor.

Quick Take

All the wedge the average (or slightly above average) golfer could want at about half the price of wedges from the major manufacturers.

The heads are beautiful, compact, and sit perfectly behind the ball at address. They’ve got beaucoup spin. You can open the face to play a variety of shots. They do just fine with full and partial shots.

As with the other Takomo products I’ve tested recently, the Skyforger 002 wedges are serious tools and you give up nothing for the killer price.

Golfer Geeks Verdict

4.4/ 5

★★★★★★★★★★

Best wedge for the money in golf right now.

5 = Among the best  /  4 = Very good  /  3 = Average–acceptable  /  2 = Below average  /  1 = Poor  /  0 = ☠️

Best For
Golfers who like brand name clubs, but don’t have to have them.
Also, golfers who are bargain-minded, but won’t sacrifice performance
Considerations

Elite golfers may require more specific grinds, other customization, or shaft options. One stock shaft in one flex, and left-handers only get four of the eight lofts.

The Verdict

I put my SM10 wedge down on day one and never looked back after playing the Takomo sand wedge. Same with my Callaway lob wedge and my Ben Hogan gap wedge (a wedge I really like).

The Skyforger 002s look the part and play the part and give up no performance vs the big boys.

Even in the world of direct to consumer clubs, the 002s stand out in performance-per-dollar.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Takomo has come to play.

The V grind is Takomo’s versatility option — 12° of bounce at every loft it comes in, with a tapered cut on the rear of the sole so the face sits flatter when you open it. That’s the one in my 56 and 60, and it’s the reason they open up as nicely as they do.

The F grind is the full sole — thicker, lower bounce, built for wedges you hit with the face square to the path. That’s my 50.

Lefties, read this before you get excited. Right-handed golfers get all 11 loft-and-grind combinations. Left-handed golfers get four: 48F, 52F, 56V and 60V.

Looks (4.5) Up there with the best I’ve laid eyes on in person. Compact, well-shaped heads with minimal design and brush-metal finish.

Distance Control (4) I consider these player wedges, so there are no hot spots and you get what you give. Perfect for accuracy and scoring.

Sound & Feel (4) Soft and solid. No clickiness, but not dead either.

Launch & Flight (4) Default is high, but I had no issues bringing that flight down.

Spin (5) All the control around the greens I need. Shots on full and partial swings stop on a dime, as they should.

Value (5+) At $99/wedge, this is almost incalculable. You won’t find a comparable wedge for this price on the market.

My Experience with the Skyforger 002s
Sole and bounce stamps on the Takomo Skyforger 002 wedges — 60 12V, 56 12V and 50 8F

Like I said above, I’ve been playing the Skyforgers gap through lob wedge for at least a couple months.

As with any wedge set I own, the 56-degree is my workhorse. And, the 002 is no different. Though, I spent extra time with the lob and gap wedge since I was in test mode.

I’m comfortable with every shot when hitting these wedges. From full swings (rare) to partial wedge shots (not rare at all) to any shot around the green.

From square face for a bump and run to opening the face to play more bounce. The Skyforger 002 sits beautifully behind the ball and has great interaction with the turf.

Full face grooves and micro-grooves on the Takomo Skyforger 002 wedge

The full face grooves with the micro-grooves between the grooves means more spin on any shot around the green, where it’s needed most.

Who Should Play Skyforger 002s?
Takomo Skyforger 002 wedges in Jamie's bag alongside the Takomo 301 CB irons

Takomo says they’re good to go for any golfer. Not so much, I think.

They’re not necessarily very demanding or punishing, but those heads are compact and there are larger options for the high handicapper.

Low handicaps (Yes): You may prefer more grind options or other customization the closer you are to scratch, but these work just fine for the rest of us.
Mid handicaps (Maybe): I think you can start looking at these the closer you are to a 15 and below.
High handicaps (Nope): Not impossible for you, but harder than it needs to be.

If you’re shopping this category more broadly, I’ve ranked these against everything else I’ve tested in best 60 degree wedges and best lob wedges — the Skyforger 002 lands at #3 in both. And if the wedges have you curious about the rest of the lineup, the Takomo 301 CB irons are the set sitting next to them in that photo.

Customer Reviews

Skyforger 002s have an average rating of 4.8 with 281 reviews in. They echo a lot of what I’ve already said here: (1)

Excellent spin.Great turf interaction.Great sound & feel.Incredible value.
Final Verdict

The Skyforger 002s do all the things I want my wedges to do, especially around the greens.

Maybe I just got lucky that the V-grind happens to fit the way I like wedges to sit on the turf for shots around the green…I’ll take it.

Beyond that, the heads are beautifully shaped and sized. They’ve got all the spin I need. And, they’ve even got a little forgiveness built in so you don’t have to catch them perfectly every time for good results.

Either way, they get my full recommendation.

Thank you for checking out our Takomo Skyforger 002 wedge review. I think they’re a screaming bargain and certainly worth your attention if you’re in the market.
