NCAA Division III Nationals Round 1 Live Show
e welcome in to the D3 golf guys live show from Men’s Nationals man is it good to be here we are very excited about it Las Vegas the greater Las Vegas area is treating us fabulously and we are super excited about everything that we are hearing and seeing on the field and on in the world it is great stuff very excited to bring you a great live show tonight okay here’s the uh agenda for this evening we’ve Gonna first we’re going to talk to the chair of the committee and we’re going to talk about what a fabulous job him and the rest of committee have done and then we’re going to go through through the men’s results for round one and then we’re going to go transition to talk about women’s Nationals and everything that is there from a kind of a selection process there we have a few things that we need to talk about but first let me introduce he is the chair of the committee he is the coach at Alia golf Mr John King is joining us John welcome to the D3 golf guys live show thanks Mike I appreciate it this is this is cool another cool thing in Vegas I like it yes yes uh you know we don’t do a lot of things great in division 3 but I’m we’re we’re we’re picking up media quickly here I like it so first off John I I go back to a a while ago it was maybe eight nine 10 months ago yeah where I got a text or a communication from you saying hey uh I really want to do live shows after each round of Nationals and but you have this great podcast is it coming back and I said funny enough it is coming back I just I I wanted to bring that up thinking man it’s been a long time coming so I’m happy that we’re here and on the live show yeah we’re thrilled to have you and the audience that’s going to listen live and I assume tomorrow morning when they wake up as well which is great because it’s 10:30 East Coast time which is where my kids are going to bed getting ready for school tomorrow um so this is just a little background real quick on this my fourth year is the chair I come from a sports information background and this sort of stuff is just this is what I enjoy um and I think it was something it’s not missing from D3 golf because there’s a lot of people who who cover it and cover it okay to well um but having this opportunity to uh grow the sport grow the promotion of this championship in particular um I’m excited about that so thank you for your part in that absolutely uh could not be happier to be here uh you know the nice thing is is a lot of our listeners and followers have contributed to our Affiliates which help raise funds for us to be here and and do all this and so uh first of all congratulations you have set up an absolutely fantastic championship and that’s just talking about breakfast right cuz let’s right breakfast makeer breaks National Championship that’s fair uh but so first of all let’s talk about the incredible committee that you have because I’ve seen them everywhere the last couple days they have been on top of things shout them out a little bit here because you got a great crew with you so this is all teamwork right golf is teamwork and putting on a championship like this is teamwork the Sunset Station is to me a phenomenal Host Hotel they they did the breakfast thing but I’ll tell you this uh Boulder Creek and Legacy Golf Clubs also take food very seriously yes and lunches and dinners go right along with that so yeah the committee um we have three coaches on the committee who are in the field and those guys busted their butt I’m thinking Dan Wesley Tom Kayley at Penn State Altuna Dan’s at University of Rochester and obviously VI L John sherg at Emy those guys it’s they’re detail oriented they they don’t mind doing any of the work that goes into this and of course we love you know they feel like family to us and we love to say hey go get them for maybe two days maybe four and uh if if if it’s two when you come back and help us great if it’s four we’ll be there in your corner until it ends um so so those guys have been phenomenal uh Brian bruha I would say this out of Lake Forest if you ever hand select a committee get a facilities guy on your committee because because they are the Jack of all trades he can fix anything he takes you know anything you ask him he he he finishes that job up and then having a couple athletic directors I think is is important so uh Bill Raleigh at uh Shriner down in Texas is our region s guy and Drew GTH at Trinity uh in Connecticut is our region one rep so yeah there’s the committee and then I have to I have to shout out Ryan Richardson from the NCAA he’s our NCAA liaison and I don’t know if you know this or not but we’re he’s the third liaison we’ve had in the last four years um and last year was trial by fire a little bit I mean got on the job late and and busted his butt and and got it done and again another guy who pick up anything and do it and the prep time that we had together coming into this Championship um I hope it smoothed out any of the wrinkles that we’ve had previous well it like one I have to say that I I’ve heard nothing but good things about pace of play and the organization of everything so that you know these are things you guys worry about especially the first two days when we got 43 teams team and six individuals on two different golf courses uh but also big shout out to the volunteers and I want you to talk about our friends here in Las Vegas cuz there are volunteers all over the place they are slinging water bottles and ice and uh shuttles at just talk about the volunteers because it’s been awesome so the lvcva uh is the is the Local Host along with UNLV um lvcva is is our tournament director is Tyler Baldwin um I mean that guy’s non stop on the go and he’s his folks were at the golf course at 5:00 a.m. which is normal golf time um but for for volunteers and workers to be 5:00 a.m. that’s a special thing and you’re right it’s it’s water it’s if you don’t know what to do if you’re if you need something to do go grab some water and take it somewhere cuz someone’s going to need it that’s and it’s not even Vegas Hot no no not even hot yet but it’s it’s still hot out there oh it is and it’s it it’s coming even hotter um yeah the Vegas people around here they’re they’re awesome you know we’re Us East Coasters just like man it’s hot out here and they’re like you don’t know hot wait for Friday that’s right that’s right so yeah just just another quick shout out to those people they at the lvcva they do so much good work around here to host events like this and it could be just another event that they do but they don’t treat it that way because they take everything so seriously and so professionally um yeah couldn’t put this all yeah and then now the other thing we’re going to talk about cuz this I’m trying to get all of our shoutouts in before I started with the really hard questions okay good uh but also the the folks at Legacy Golf Club and at Boulder Creek the staff the professional staff the the superintendent they’ve been great uh they’ve been present been out front absolutely outstanding and special shout out to the gang at Boulder Creek that golf course is in as good a shape as I have seen a national championship and I’ve seen a lot of them yeah and that golf course is in an absolute great shape and we saw we saw some people take advantage of that conditioning today no doubt uh um the the the folks at both courses to your point have been again you think that you’re going to bump into somebody that for whatever reason is going to be average and you just haven’t found it yet um Andy schaper is the um general manager at um Boulder Creek his team is unreal I mean and one of the things I shout out to the committee too because I think we we I think we do this well is we work hard at having fun and his people at Boulder Creek I mean there’re you get to know some of those people a shout out to Neil at the driving range you’ll meet him tomorrow he’s out of his gourd um but he is it’s the type of guy that puts the energy into um The Experience there is so much that goes into preparation of a golf course you know this golf people know this um at the crack before the cracken Dawn yeah uh and that’s just one of those little it’s one of those Nuance things that comes into decision making about what you’re going to do and when you’re going to do it um and they have been right there they they don’t say no to anything it’s it’s unbelievable so shout out to those folks as well uh and and the people at Legacy too Legacy is you know you’re not going to sugar coat it it it’s got some work to be done it’s got some but it’s I think the layout there’s kind of cool there’s some cool views and there’s some really interesting golf shots well it played and I’m get in the stats here but it played about two strokes harder for the top half of the field yeah right the bottom half field kind of leveled it out a little bit um but but we saw a sign ific thing and it’ll be interesting to see how that switching of courses happens tomorrow but also want a special shout out to you because I think you were big in this but a really great experience and we put this out on our Instagram was the ceremonial first t- shots uh the other day with our special Olympians just tell us a little bit about that because that was pretty special yeah the the NCAA has a relationship with the Special Olympics and they really try to it’s it’s one of the things that’s in your sort of host manual these are the things that you need to prepare to do how can we um work with the local chapter of Special Olympics and do something that’s meaningful for some of their um Olympians some of their athletes and you reach out and the lvcva did a lot of this work for us found um a couple of special Olympians who participate in the sport of golf now I know at least one of the ones at Boulder Creek where I was was going to a bowling match that afternoon and then had a swim meet like later in the week it’s they are they’re invested and I will say this um and I’ve said this to a couple people and you know people may start to roll their eyes at some point but what the group of student athletes did to make that a special event for the two I speak specifically of the two at Boulder Creek and I know the same thing happened at Legacy to surround that tea box take a couple minutes before you’re going to hit your first t- shot in a practice round of the national championship and to make a meaningful experience for those two people um I really appreciate the effort that went into that um the one special Olympian that we had Corbin had driven two hours drove two hours to Boulder Creek to hit one t-shot and so for us to put that together for him I think was well and I I did get to see him drive around a little bit he got to watch a little bit of stuff so uh I know he was out there asking some questions where you guys from and some of that kind of stuff so so that was also very special and I’m really excited for tomorrow with the inclusion of folds of Honor yeah which uh you know it we do a lot of folds of Honor stuff with golf but I love that we bring it into the national championships talk a little bit about that yeah another partnership with um with uh NCAA golf division 3 where we are going to honor um Fallen Soldiers at every t- boox uh with a sign where there’s where there’s a bio of that individual um and then each one of the teams will be playing for one of those individuals and that that’ll be mentioned at the first te and it’s a it’s a meaningful script that our starters read um you know there are some coaches you know I love them that they they’ll come up to you and say can you tell me a little bit more where can I find out more about the the individual that we’re playing for um and that goes a long way and some of them you know may even get to the point where they reach out to family and I mean these guys they they are so invested in it and it’s it’s at the most important time of the year for them from a golf perspective but they still have the the wherewithal and the patience and the time and the heart to invest in in other people yeah it I’m looking forward to that tomorrow uh that’ll be that’ll be a really nice way to kind of uh get everybody in the right frame of mind before we uh before we worried about a cut and and moving on to all the hard stuff right uh so but look hey you got a great day of golf in round one absolutely uh I we think Methodist may have set a record in some fashion in underpar Strokes of something or there’s a couple different things we’re we’re researching uh we don’t have those things right at our fingertips we need about 17 SIDS here to to be able to figure that stuff out and unfortunately emry probably would have set the record but they were playing with Methodist today right and so 17 under 16 under wow I mean Redlands comes in there as well um but a big swing between the two courses and I think tomorrow we’re going to see that that switch of courses that’s going to really kind of show all right you know who’s uh who’s going to take on the the the the hard course in the afternoon and the wind and more heat yeah well absolutely and I think folks like you and I are we are so eager to dive into these stats and so what’s it going how’s it playing who’s playing well who’s on a you know who’s setting records whatever we have to pump the brakes and get through 36 holes so that right everyone’s played that same combination but you you made a good point cuz you’re going to flip your time this this morning was spring comfort in Vegas from 8:00 to 11:00 I was on a tea at 7:45 this morning right standing right there watching and it was cloud cover and no wind and out it was like oh my goodness yeah look out that’s it um but by the by the the afternoon I was like there’s wind all of a sudden and it like literally I was watching a couple teams where their five four and three guys played a whole downwind there two guy played it in no wind and the one guy played it into the wind yes yeah and because it’s forecast is obviously something that we look at oh yeah and pay attention to and so you had the south wind for most of the day today and you’re exactly right in that period of time where teams played a whole it shifted to Northwind and Northwind is what you have tomorrow so um just another one of those variables yeah in looking at is how these teams play these two golf courses yes well John look congratulations so far it’s been outstanding I I you know we’re going to be breaking down everything here as we go uh but but we didn’t want you to leave without a signant ific amount of D3 golf guys swag excellent so one we got a tumbler for you with D3 golf guys on that we got a t-shirt for you and we’ve got a hat here from our friends at titlist with the D3 golf guys logo on the backside there so we just appreciate your partnership and everything that we’re doing here and uh look we’re excited about this we’re going to we we didn’t want to bring a lot of players and coaches on after round one just to kind of let it settle in a little bit let everybody get to that piece uh but we’re going to be talking to other coaches and players as we go um we’ve got our got our makeshift Studio here in the Sunset Station uh which is uh which is working great for us but I just want to say thank you very much uh we appreciate you know you inviting us to here D3 golf guys in um and what a special amazing uh tournament you guys have going so far well thank you it’s it’s our pleasure we again love to work hard at having fun and love to put something on that these student athletes will um have a memory of a lifetime experience and for me I’ll tell you that goes from top to bottom we have 221 student athletes that we’re concerned about every one of them yep having a meaningful experience well John thanks for joining us live here tonight of course my pleasure all right okay we will uh let’s let’s take a quick second here to talk about our friends at Titleist you’re good you’re good uh thanks John all right uh so look if you haven’t had a chance to try the new T-Series irons from Titleist they are a GameChanger they are helping people from every different kind of level of work and Excellence through the game of golf if you haven’t gone to talk to your Titleist fitter please do so because those t- series I saw a lot of them out there today and boy can those those young people hit them high and soft it is amazing all right let’s get into the results for the men here as as we kind of work through some of this so first of all if you’re looking at golf stat one of the key things and you heard us talk about this earlier is there two we play two different courses today and tomorrow so what you’re going to see is if there was a one by the team’s name they played Boulder Creek today if there’s a two by their name they played the Legacy Golf Club now as I would mentioned earlier in the top half of the field so that would be the the of the 43 ranked teams the top half that were ranked higher there was about a two-stroke difference between the Legacy harder to Boulder Creek easier now that is very rare we typically when we play Nationals the the the main course that plays harder and Boulder Creek is not an easy golf course but it is in such good condition that these fantastic young players that we have out there took serious advantage and were able to make a lot of birdies and and I’ve stood on the greens out there the putting is just outstanding the greens are in great shape there’s hardly any divots in the Fairway when we got here it it’s it’s like they set it up as a PGA Tour event for us here in division 3 now that that just says a lot about the condition of the golf course so if you’re looking at at the at the at the standings in golf stat you’ll see that it takes till you get to tied for sixth before you see somebody from Legacy so that should tell you the differences in the course um now one of the differences is at Legacy you know the there’s a was a lot firmer it was even more firm than it was in the practice round the day before and it’s probably going to get firmer tomorrow um they baked out the greens baked out pretty hard uh throughout the day and and that’s just not going to stop out here because it’s only going to get hotter tomorrow the other Factor here is you had the top half of the teams tea off in the morning so they got the advantage of the the no wind some cloud cover a little bit of softer ground which is why you saw Methodist and Emy run out which should also tell you just how good Redlands played because they played in the later wave um so it says that hey you can still shoot that number those kinds of numbers out at Boulder Creek in the afternoon and so that’s an important thing to remember as we look towards tomorrow but going into today that just helping explain sort of when you’re looking at golf stat what does this look like and and where are we taking things so let’s start Methodist Goes Bananas and emry does too but they’re they’re doing at the same time so Methodist comes out with 271 17 under part day they had five eagles it just outstanding golf emry plays outstanding also 272 and they had like 20 something birdies the but just outstanding right and they had two Eagles Redlands comes out in the afternoon at Boulder Creek they shoot 275 under so we’ve got the top three teams are all in double digit under par that is great great great um now what we’re going to see is they’re going to have to go play Legacy course tomorrow that will be an interesting you know Prospect because legacy’s a little bit tighter golf course and it’s firm and and I was watching kids kind of play well short of pins from time to time um and and anything kind of on a down slope or downwind was hard to stop so that will be very interesting to watch them play as we go through this okay Redlands at three Illinois Wesleyan also at Boulder Creek fourth 280 eight under really good playing um Lynchberg seven under 281 at five sitting in Solo fifth right now okay three groups tied at six bethl who had by the way 28 birdies today wow that is a lot of birdies 28 birdies for bethl today they’re tied for six 282 with Kenyan and Carnegie melon who were at Legacy six under at Legacy in those conditions excellent excellent score so I you know having spent some time at Legacy today 280 to 284 was going to be a really really good score it just wasn’t giving up I mean uh at Legacy a good example where Boulder Creek par fivs play all played under par except for one was played even 14 at Legacy was the second hardest hole yes today so it just a big difference where you have a par five plane over par um it’s just that it’s with with a level of players that they have today it it that’s very rare um so you can just see the differences in that okay two teams tied for ninth Aurora and oglethorp uh Aurora was on on Boulder Creek and oglethorp was at Legacy both three under par 285s very good uh two tight at 11 St John’s Minnesota and Washington Le both at Legacy so you know if you’re kind of looking it’s going to be okay Kenyan Carnegie melon and oal Thorp St John’s Washington Le Huntington are all switching over to Boulder Creek so it’s going to be okay can they go over there and shoot 10 12 under par and have the advantage of getting that course but having maybe played Legacy in the morning whereas emry and Methodist are going to have to play it in the afternoon um so that’ll be that’ll be an interesting thing and you we should see the field get a little closer together now that doesn’t mean that that Emory and Methodist can’t go over and play outstanding golf over at Legacy because I’m pretty sure they’re going to play really really well but it’s just going to be a different kind of test and this is tends to be what we see when we hit this big of a difference between the two courses okay is we tend to see them switch over and the field get back together a little bit now I think what they also see is there’s a big kind of difference between the top half of the field which we’ talked about all year and and the bottom half of that field all right so getting in there Huntington tied for 13 with University of Texas at Dallas at two overpar par Texas at Dallas was at Boulder Creek but then I’m going to kind of run down the rest of these things uh the rest of the order here um Shriner clar mud scripts Farmingdale State all tied for 15th currently St John’s fiser and Franklin and Marshall tied for 18th currently uh Whitman College uh solo 20th right now good playing by those guys today very good uh tied for 21 University of Rochester and the Hassan guys um good playing by the guys from the Northeast eight eight over you know I they’re coming I you know they’ve done some nice things for us um they’ve been great great with everybody else that great team great coaches I like to see uh some of those Northeastern schools play well uh Roger Williams solo 23rd very good play excuse me live uh live on YouTube Sorry gotta sneeze you gota sneeze uh it was dry and Dusty out there today all right uh lerno and Swani tied for 24th uh Mississippi University for women and York College Pennsylvania tied for 26th Penn State alauna and Luther tied for 28th alagan College tied for 30th with rose homman Institute of Technology tus University at 32 Wittenberg 33 Pennsylvania College of Technology 34 Hope College 35 Eastern Connecticut State 36 Wisconsin Superior in otterbine tied for 37th Scranton 39th Stevens Institute of Technology 40th Springfield College 40th New England College 42nd and Marmont 43rd okay uh so that that’s the team scores now when we talk about team the big thing tomorrow is the cut so there will be a cut for the top 18 teams and six individuals that are not on a team that made the cut so we have six individuals playing in the field if they are one of the top six individuals they keep playing if they are not in that top six individuals of the teams that have not that that do not make the cut so for example if there’s somebody down in the in the 30s but their number one guy is playing outstanding and they’re in the top six then they will stay in the field as an individual even though their team gets cut okay so 18 teams so like right now we would have to have a playoff between St John’s fiser and Franklin and Marshall now there are rules and computations about how do we do that when can we do that it’ be done at one Golf Course it’ll be done at Boulder Creek if they’re on different courses they will try to do it that that afternoon or evening if we can’t we’ll come back in the morning and do it and there’s some other non-playing tiebreakers if we get stuck to that point but usually those things tend to work out but uh I know my committee guys are are watching going please don’t talk about uh there being a playoff for for the cut got it uh okay let’s talk over to some of the outstanding individual performances and it it gets me excited cuz I want to get some of these people on a live show tomorrow but I kind of made a commitment to say we need to talk about the women’s game a little bit tonight I wanted to talk to John for a long period of time so we’ll have some more players and coaches in the next two days as we go live but uh not a big surprise here leader in the clubhouse after round one Jackson kutnik eight under 64 today outstanding play uh another reason why Jackson got selected to be in the Palmer cup which is an outstanding standing uh amateur event uh he’ll be representing all of D3 in that uh you know we get D3 guys in occasionally we’ve been getting a little bit more of that so Jackson’s going to get to play in that and he came out today and played outstanding eight under 64 uh especially you know Boulder Creek lots of birdies over there but then number two is Jonathan mckuin from Washington and Lee 657 under at the harder Legacy course really good playing we had three at third Michael Sullivan for oglethorp also at the Legacy bogey free 65 or 66 excuse me uh really great playing Griffin Pole from Illinois Wesleyan 66 and Chase Waltz from Methodist 66 and look you know we we were talked about Chase early on he’s delivered time and time again an outstanding 66 today by Chase um just kind of go through the the amount of stuff I you know underpar rounds they go to the the the 45th player on the list so I’m not going to go through all of the players here I’m going to kind of Hit the top 10 so uh we had four tied for six Eddie Coffer the fifth from Lynchburg Cooper rayre from Methodist Tony Lee from Emery Jake Yim from Redlands and then four tied for 10th uh Jack veratrin from Aurora Aidan spampanato from Methodist zanen malarski from Redlands and Michael Spitzer from Illinois Wesley and all four underpar and that’s the top 10 so four under gets you into the top 10 or more just outstanding we will go more into these as we get later in the field but I don’t want to talk about you know every single individual as we go down um and so again remember of the top of the people that are top 10 in ties there are two players from the Legacy course the other third the other are all from Boulder Creek so we we have to watch that that the transition tomorrow even from an individual perspective you know the guys who shot eight eight under and six under at the one course what are they going to do in Legacy you also might look at the guys who shot way seven and six under respectively at Legacy going to Boulder Creek getting it maybe going okay can they do even better over there that that would to be to be determined there okay so looking ahead till tomorrow on the men things to look for is going to be one not only are the are the is the field switching courses but they’re also switching times so if if your if the team was off early in the early wave today they’ll be in the late wave tomorrow if they were in the late wave today they will be in the early wave tomorrow so just like on the PGA tour and things that you watch online or or on TV Methodist emry went out early today they will go out late tomorrow Redlands went out late today they will go off early tomorrow so a lot of teams will have played 36 holes before some of the lead before the leaders will even hit their first t- shot um which is you know crazy but that’s how that works in in this kind of a thing uh tomorrow is supposed to be hotter now a little bit about conditions here it is absolutely gorgeous here it is sunny bright Skies you know there were some clouds today a little bit which caused a little bit of a break which is probably why the scores were so good um we expect it to be hotter tomorrow um it hydration is what everybody is talking about um the NCA was even nice enough they they found some power raid water bottles gave everybody a big water bottle and the volunteers have done nothing but keep a keep everybody on the golf course hydrated Spectators coaches players outstanding job uh but it’s going to get a little bit breezier in the afternoon like it always does and so that’s really where we’re going to see okay who can take advantage of the morning wave so things I’m watching for what does Redlands do at Legacy in the morning and then how does Legacy play in the afternoon do we still see that two stroke split right and when we say two strokes what we mean is the average round was two strokes higher for the morning waves the afternoon waves evened some things out um so it which is good because if you look in you say okay they’re basically even but if you break those numbers down a little bit it was about two-stroke difference on average score in the morning waves between the two golf courses does that hold or does it change over again and everybody’s shooting way under par at Legacy tomorrow and it’s more about who is playing really well on the field versus how hard the golf course was so that’s one thing to look at for tomorrow uh other things to look at is look the the par five scoring has been significant in this tournament we told that as we previewed the tournament uh you know five eagles for for Methodist two more for emry lots of eagles out there uh not a lot of eagles on Legacy lots of Eagles at at Boulder Creek so how does that play out tomorrow that’ll be one of the things that also to look at is are the teams that made a lot of birdies are they still making birdies the other thing that as I was looking at the stats and if you go on there there’s a way to go to Team and player stats and look at some of this is you know par five scoring is really you’re able to usually perform that over and over again par three scoring usually revolves around ball striking par four scoring is sometimes where you get hot streaky things that are sometimes hard to maintain especially when you’re talking about the whole locations that we’ve seen today are tucked there’s a lot of tucked hard hard hole locations that if you are going after pins you can get yourself in some hard hard spots so it’s going to be interesting to see if you know people that are under par and Par fours that’s sometimes hard to keep going we’ll see if they can keep that going tomorrow but sometimes you’ll see that going and just like on the PGA tour where you see a guy who makes 300 feet of putts the next day he only makes 50 feet of putts and his 64 turns into 72 and he kind of come and it’s kind of evens out so that’ll be one of the things that we really want to look on the men’s field okay now let’s talk about the women’s game and where we are with women selection okay so the women’s field was selected and there’s been some drama around it one of the things is is we talked about before that there were going to be two pool B spots and three at larges however one of those pool B spots I believe got taken away because grenell and the slak did get an automatic qualify and I don’t think that was in the math that we had gotten saying two pool B and three pool C now I I don’t like how this gets handled because I feel like that should be solved before we get into this but I also know that sometimes there’s a team and then they don’t have teams and things change in the middle of the of the of the season I don’t think that was the case this time and so you know if you’re Washington univer you know University of Washington the wasu Bears are probably upset they’re the number nine team in the country and they’re not going to Nationals as a team now this says a whole lot about what we need to do in the women’s game the The Challenge that we have there is there are 29 teams in the field right now we only have four at large bids and so there’s just a lot of automatic qualifiers there’s a couple things that what can wash you do well one be higher ranked that that would help to join a conference and see if they can get into one of the automatic qualifier conferences but what I think is more likely to happen is the conversation we’re having both on the men and the women side I think is we got to start talking about regionals um because then we can get more people into that thing and it can be more a play your way in um that also solves some of the automatic qualifiers that get to Nationals and then they’re just not as the quality of level they’re one they conference and that’s great but the the conference level is so much lower than what the what the most the field is at Nationals that it doesn’t seem fair to leave teams out that can compete in that top half and so regionals really does help us doing that and I know that the NCAA is finally starting to talk about regionals at the division 3 level it doesn’t solve all of our problems but it does solve some um but look if you listen to this podcast we were worried and said hey I don’t know that wasu is getting in we we predicted exactly who got in the field again based on what we knew at the time assuming uming that that that one at large bid went away when grenell got in on for the Sak and I look I think grenell should have been in but I think things need to be better communicated all over the place in the women’s game for certain now the other big piece on the women’s game is on the individual uh side we had look and and look nothing here is easy but we had some really good players that were not on a team and not on a team that was going and so Sydney quill who is you know clearly a top three player in the country for wasu is the first individual in you know interestingly uh the women actually put rankings on who was ranked where on their list of individuals I think the men did it on alphabetical uh so they said you know seated in the following order Sydney quo W from wasu Carter sickle from Carlton college and again no quals with with with Sydney no quals with Carter welld deserved Becky Williams was third from depa Aaron Donovan from pedmont was fourth Sarah kitchi from Mary Harden Baylor was Fifth and Emily Brew breaker from Lynchburg was sixth now a lot of people and I heard some scuttlebutt talking about uh Jessica Wang from Amherst was the 10th ranked person in the country according to the clip scoreboard rankings what the committee is tell telling us is that she was not the 10th ranked player in the country according to them so they probably weren’t living off of these rankings now the other thing that I did when I did some research is you know I I heard some people kind of say h how can 22nd player get in over the 10th player well hold on we have to think about head-to-head and resumés right especially when we’re talking about individuals the challenge here is that both Brew Baker and Aaron Donovan uh beat or no yeah uh they they beat Jessica at jeal and so that’s where you’re like okay and actually Becky Williams did also because all of them are ranked below her the other thing I think when you look at you look at from a resume perspective is Jessica had one win and everybody else in that list had more wins and and and most of them had more top threes and so I think what they’re trying to tell us is the also if you look at at the clip rankings uh you’ll see that the rounds were lower so I think when they did this they looked at it a little bit more of the oldfashioned way and didn’t stick straight to the clip scoreboard now I had a conversation that I will keep private uh on the men’s side on somebody who was in the know and I said we got really lucky with how the rankings fell and they agreed with me because they were looking at things based on head to head and some of the ways we did that they did not necessarily go by the clipped rankings it just happened to be that way because of the bid steals had the bid steals not happened we may have seen a little bit more movement and we might have had the same conversation on the men’s side and again I think this stinks to Hall get out because what I really want to get to is I want to get to a regional so that we can have a larger amount of teams get a chance to play for the national championship but then have a smaller National Championship that allows us to do just one golf course so for example the men’s side we have 43 teams we could probably do 50 to 60 teams in several different regions what does that mean okay that means that we have a large Regional in the Southeast a regional in the Northeast a regional in the midwest maybe a medal somewhere maybe either mid lower Midwest Upper Midwest Texas California whatever those are right and and we can go through competition it’s five regions it’s seven regions four regions I don’t know but most likely it’s a regionals that people most people can drive to in order to keep the cost down because look division 3 is not a look golf is not a revenue generating sport in any level it definitely isn’t in division three um can we do a regional where we do that well then we say well okay but you can’t give every region the same one no it would be based on the rankings what percentage of the rankings do you have that’s a percentage of field that you get and then teams can fight fighted out for in that that’s a very fair way to do it you know you’re going to have more you’re going to have more spots for Nationals in the Southeast just because you know if you look there’s Methodist and Lynchberg and oglethorp and swanie and all those things right but in the Northeast we’ve got you know Rochester and Babson and and you know Williams and those guys okay but they might only get you know lesser spots in the midwest we might have okay you got your Aurora and St John’s and bethl and Illinois Wesley okay well they probably have another good chunk and then Texas and California but that would be the fairest way to do it and and the good news is is the the powers that be are finally starting to have that conversation um do I know when that’s going to happen no but we’ve never even been able to bring it up as a conversation until recently so I think that’s a good solution that doesn’t make anybody at wash you or or at Amherst feel better on the women’s side right now and you know that just stinks I hate that uh but you know this is just how it works and you know if there was a way to just go hey let’s just add one more individual I know committee members would love to do that because it just wouldn’t seem to be fair but then where does that stop and where do we go with it so a little bit of drama on the women’s side that I don’t know that anybody really wanted or expected but you know I think that’s an interesting situation I think it pushes us down the right path though when we kind of have the the wrong things happen happening because look on the men’s side we were at 16 to 17 in the country saying they didn’t get in Nationals okay well that stinks you know you if you’re in the side of the top 20 you should probably get a chance to play for it but comparing that to the number nine team in the country washu not getting into Nationals on the women’s side yikes that’s that’s hard to swallow um you’re telling me that if I’m in a top 10 team and I can’t get into Nashville something’s got to change um you know now I I I’m confident that we’ll we’ll work to get it right in division three but look that some of these things are are are how they have been and and look when I played in division 3 it was a be total beauty contest based on region um and so you didn’t even there was no automatic qualifiers for winning your conference so it trust me there there are worse things for us to do I I have lived through some of those worst things things but again I think as we continue down this path we’ll continue to see everything get better and better but look I’m very excited I can’t wait for tomorrow uh it’s going to be drama if if we can bring you some video or anything of a playoff we will do our best to try to show that to you um but I can’t guarantee that because we don’t know where it might if it’s at the other golf course if I’m at the wrong Golf Course uh I you know we’ll just be out of luck there but we’ll we’ll be back live tomorrow night uh and and and that there we’re going to hope to bring in some coaches and some players we’re going to try to find some of the top individual players and and talk to them about their rounds and and how they’re playing we’re going to bring in some of the coaches we’re going to talk to as many of those guys as we can um but we might highlight some people that made the cut or have made the cut for the first time or have kind of overachieved from their seed within that space as well as just the top teams themselves so very excited really appreciate you tuning in uh if you haven’t done so yet pound
