In this golf review/lesson, Dan Hendriksen showcases the difference between the traditional bladed iron and the game improvement hybrid iron. The majority of golfers have shied away from using game improvement clubs because of one MAJOR factor; EGO. Dan takes the 2 sets of clubs on the course to see how he gets on with both and tests a wide variety of shots to see if there are any major differences.

Just picked up a set of MP 20 MB's love them got a lot of jumper's from my Apex pro's 👍
I’m heavy on the wedges so I’ve learned to hit my 5w 200-240y. I’d look into a 7w also. I’m 5-Pw 48-52-56-60.
Thanks Dan, getting fitted for new Irons, at 71, perhaps I should look at these hybrids
Switched from r7s to the Cleveland launchers 2 years ago. Im in my 30s and have plenty of speed, but will take all the help I can get with strikes. As a weekend warrior, I went from a 22 to a 15 handicap over the year. If I could putt, I’d probably be a 10😂! Nobody has ever given me a hard time for having them in the bag. Everybody I ever have played with just wants everyone else to play their best and keep the pace up. So play with what helps you get around best.
I play off plus 1, and I game a 3 and 4 hybrid. I'm more confident hitting the green with them from 190 to 220 yards than I am with my 5 irons from 185.
May sound bass ackwards, but I think we should all learn with blades. To learn what a good swing and strike feels like. Then if the golfer wants to explore other technology, they can with knowledge of what it should feel like.
Too, I play in a senior league and some of my friends have successfully gone to the hybrid irons to compensate for age and the damnable changes that come with it.
Great comparison Dan, thank you! With the majority of mid and high handicap players coming up short with the approach shots, the extra help from hybrids may also help more greens in reg? Lowest iron I have is 6 iron with help then into 5 hybrid and 7 wood to make it easier.
Very interesting. It is amazing how many high handicappers carry ego clubs like longer irons when it is blindingly obvious that a 5 hybrid or 7 wood could take 2-3 shots off their score immediately
Dan – do you think mid to high handicappers would benefit from having a pro just assess their nag and advise accordingly? Not a fitting, just advice on what clubs they should just take out of the bag?
What I want to say most is thank you for being honest Dan. I've been playing launcher Hb turbo irons for around a year now, I'm a 10 handicap golfer but am a massive advocate for this type of club as it helps so much for all kinds of players. But I've seen other YouTubers do these tests and you can always tell that their thoughts are "it's not aimed at me" despite the results being great.
I do use smithworks wedges in 48/52/56 as there 100% are situations where a "normal" club is better in short game, but that's something I found in testing and experience.
Great content as always DH.
Switched to Ping G430 irons about 2 weeks ago. 5 handicap but golf is hard enough, I want to enjoy it as much as I can. Why make it any harder than it needs to be. And to be honest playing partners and mates honestly don’t care, especially if your beating them. 🙂
I was struggling to get the ball in the air so was fitted for irons and ended up with Cobra T-Rails, 5 iron to GW. I found a huge difference at the start in being able to launch higher but now am managing to control the flight a lot better. I think I just needed the confidence of a hybrid iron at the start and am now happy playing them all the time.
Golfers make golf harder it's that simple we don't learn 😂
Nice insights and good info. I am an "inbetweener" I think. Playing Mizuno Pro223s 4-GW, and 56 and 60 degree Vokeys (You have to have Vokeys right😂). They are pretty much standard loft which I like.(Tried the Pro225s which jumped for me exactly as You said Dan, and I couldnt control them as good as the 223s). Have always been good with my long irons, and actually just put a hybrid in my bag at 50 years old. Use it from the fairway instead of my 4-iron (which I use from the tee), as I find it easier to hit from the grass than the 4-iron.
I agree with just about everything you said. Unless you are playing pure muscleback blades, they all are designed to help get the ball up to some degree. I mean, the T100s are definitely players' irons, but they have tons of tungsten low in the club, bringing down the center of gravity. In my opinion, 5 percent of golfers should be using the 2 styles you focused on in the video. Everyone else fits in players' cavity, players' distance, and regular game improvement irons. Blades are too demanding for most golfers to get the most out of them, and hybrid style irons are easy-to-use for a lot of golfers but lack sound, feel, control, and versatility. This can keep beginner's and occasional players from getting better or developing shot shaping and shot flighting skills. That is one of the great things about golf. Everybody enjoys different equipment for many different reasons. Awesome video.
Good video Dan, would love to see a review type video of the latest cavity wedges, I am considering swapping out my vokeys for the Cleveland cbx zipcore.
Hi Dan. Im currently using Taylormade tour preferred mb (2012) if I had to move into a new set it would be the Mizuno 221. ❤❤❤❤❤
0:32 – Love that sound……
I'd be interested to see how Titleist blades of 5 or 10 years ago compare to the latest. My coach was telling me that he cannot hit his old (Titleist) blades as far as his current set … there's about a 10 – 15m difference
Hi Dan… Are you palying regular in the shafts of the eleven hybrids?? The best part of my game is using 3 and 4 hybrid in stiff flex.. I contacted eleven golf and they did say they can put a a project x stiff shaft in them… I really believe these could change my game as I just cannot hit irons properly even after lessons… thank you
Excellent review Dan. Thanks 🙂
Nice video Dan – I use cavity backed irons P-6i then move into hybrids 5,4,3. I am actually considering a 6h to replace 6i as my poor long iron shots are so poor yet my poor shots with hybrids are still ok
