On March 14, 2023, the USGA and R&A announced a proposed rollback of the golf ball for elite competitive golfers through a new standard for equipment compliance. What exactly is changing? Does it impact recreational players? Is it a good idea? What do the equipment companies have to say? What comes next? For my podcast, 2 Off the 1st, I tried to answer all that as best as possible.

  1. I think they should just roll the ball for everyone in general. I get your point in regards to us not playing the same equipment as pros but we don’t mind if the pros have better equipment but we don’t to have better equipment that the pros.

If Rory or DJ drives the ball 320 with rollbacked golf ball and I drive a ball 320 with a longer ball then I feel like a fraud. I want to see if I can drive the ball 320 with the same ball or a shorter ball to see if I am optimizing my swing to get that distance.

And example would be If there was local rule on driver length of 48 inches but the pros played the max length of 46 inches then I would only want to play 46 inches because I want to see how I can become more efficient with my swing.
