  1. Great video! I’m going for a fitting in august at the PGA superstore. I’m really interested in the Wilson D9 and D9 forged. I’m trying to go in with an open mind. I just hope I trust the staff in getting the right irons.

  2. I agree. I use the
    TaylorMade SIm 2 Driver / 3w.
    Cleveland XL 3 & 4 hybrids.
    PXG 0311xp (5-7) Irons.
    PXG 0311p (8- P) Irons.
    PXG forged 49, 54, 60 degree.
I will add that I have always liked TM drivers and done pretty well with them. Since the shafts can be mixed (shaft sleeve) and matched, I just stayed with TM. Due to having 3 TM drivers now, I can actually mix and match the different shafts if needed. Shafts are similar but slightly different weight, feel, and trajectory.

  3. More regular Joe golfers need to play with game improvement irons but everyone wants to play with what they see the pros using. Big mistake, you are not them and it’s ok, buy game improvement. Best decision I ever made.

  4. Figure out your correct swing weight the weight that allows you to pause in your back swing and find the center of the face every time. Buy some lead tape and find if your club head is to light and you cant feel it then build off that weight. Grips tend to change a swing weight drastically so be careful.

  5. I’m new to your channel, and looking to get back in to golf. I played years ago pretty regularly. I’ve spent the last 2 days watching your videos and you got me very excited to go get fitted for some new clubs this weekend. I feel like now I’ll have a little bit of an idea of what I’m talking about going in. Great content! Thank you!

  6. Very great advice Gabe. I'm very guilty of brand loyalty and buying clubs for looks. But that is only to an extent, I know I'm nowhere near skilled enough for blades and extra stiff shafts. I also am a huge fan of buying last season's models and or used clubs.

  7. I have been fitted for irons once. My pro was taking a customer to Ping hq in the UK.. I went along and was fitted for Ping Zing 2. Not the most beautiful of clubs but boy, did they perform. No lesson learnt because I eventually changed them for some TaylorMade irons. Big mistake. All you have said Gabe I needed to know 30 to 40 years ago.

  8. Excellent advice Gabe. I agree with the fitting. I bought a Cobra XL driver a few years ago. Hit well at the golf store but when I went to use it on the course, I couldn't hit it. I put it away for a few years. Finally decided to try the driver again but this time I decides to get it fitted. It turns out the shaft was an 1in and a half too long. Got it cut down and I'm enjoying my best driving in years. Keep up the good work.

  9. Man this video would have help 3 months ago. Not because I made a huge mistake, but because I bought a set of wedges more out of loyalty then performance and didn’t get fitted for them. I still play them good, but probably could have gotten a better performing set.

  10. Really good tips to consider when you're thinking of buying new or even used equipment. I bought off the shelf because I was new to the game and didn't want to spend loads of cash, so I watched for sales to slowly replace my learning set (maybe before I should have). After I bought everything I took my bag to a highly recommended mom & pop shop golf store, we worked on finding my length and lie angle, it's helped so much. I am swinging comfortably now, more consistent which has led to more confidence at approach. Because I have a newer set of irons the lofts are on the high side, 5 iron plays more like a 4 iron, the attack/approach wedge plays more like a pitching wedge, I ended up taking out the attack/approach wedge and run 4 Vokey wedges 48, 52, 56 and a 60. I selected my wedges using the Vokey questionnaire which asks about course conditions, swing style and divot type etc. It's made a difference along with lessons and in less than 2 seasons I'm playing bogey golf or better on the regular, I'm hitting fairways 70% or so. Still need to work on accuracy ( landing 15 feet or more from the hole on approach or chips), distance control (on line but going long or just short of the green) and putting to get my scores even lower.

  11. Great information Gabe. So many people do not understand the importance of being fit. Definitely important with the irons.

  12. I just got the pxg 0311st and they are amazing.. especially with a double discount with their first responder discount.

  13. Great video Gabe! Being addicted to finding deals and steals on used clubs via eBay and FB Marketplace definitely makes me guilty of mistake #8 and #1. However, it is nice to be able to try those clubs out on the course for a few rounds and if you don’t get on with them, you can sell them for about the same or a little more or less than what you bought them for. There is also the thrill of the hunt to find the perfect setup for you via buying, trying, trading and selling used clubs. Finally been able to hone in on my bag (especially gapping at the top) with some Callaway super hybrids (I’m a Callaway fan boy so I guess that makes me guilty of mistake #2 as well lol) from 3H to 6H. I have an above average swing speed and play stiff flex clubs throughout the bag and I am a decent ball striker but based on my swing and what fits my eye as well as gapping, hybrids suit me best (I don’t even bother with a fairway wood in my bag because my 3H is much more consistent with distance and dispersion). The only other club buying mistake I would add to this list is buying clubs based on ego. So many of my friends I know could benefit from replacing their 3 and 4 irons with hybrids or even their 5 or 6 irons but they refuse to do so because “that’s for old geasers”. Same goes for mallet putters versus blades because blades are “prettier”. I always get a couple jabs when I pull out my 6 hybrid or my oversized Scotty Cameron Futura 6M but damn it feels good taking their $20’s at the end of the round! Awesome video again and keep ‘em coming!

  14. Honestly… fitting feels like it can be such a fluke though. most golfers can't reliably reproduce their swing and change a lot throughout the season even after the off season too in winter bound places. reproducing results off of hitting 5 or 6 balls with 4 or 5 shafts and 2-3 heads…. if you go back tomorrow will your results be different? likely. Honestly that's a GREAT video idea. go through a fitting and then do the EXACT same fitting the next day…. a week later…a month later… These are stats I am super interested in. I have a bag loaded with G425's why? because I know the forgiveness throughout the line is great. I would like to take my bag and go have a look at shaft fitting. it's something I am curious about for sure. I am also going to check out my loft and lie and send my irons to ping and have them change the lie and adjust the dots on the hosels. (I always hear the g425's are hard to bend)

  15. Agree with the fitting part. Edwin Watts will fit you free and you don't have to buy the clubs. Callaway preowned is an excellent way to buy like new clubs for a great discount. I wish all the manufactures did this.

  16. Love this list, I have made these mistakes, the multiple fittings will get expensive, but I get it, I hit 5 balls with each club and that was my fitting ended up not liking certain clubs I thought I would love. I was hitting aweful that day so I like I think it was 9. And I agree 100% with your gapping and to look used, I hit used clubs. I was just given three TM RBZ irons someone threw out, they are nice. But still plan one day to get refitted and gapped and buy a set that I was fitted for. Thanks for this list.

  17. Regarding fitting…there is a Golf Galaxy commercial with a fitter who says “I’m fitting you for the swing you brought me today”…and that worries me about getting fit. Also I don’t like hitting into a screen. That happened to me a couple of years ago, I went to GG for a driver fitting, I was awful. Toeing everything. I told the guy, hey I got to come back at another time because I don’t have it today.

  18. Also regarding fitting, some fittings just. Use a 7 iron. That’s not good enough. You need to hit a 4 and the PW at a minimum. I think you need to spend more time researching the fitter tan the clubs!!!!

  19. Hand up ✋️ I'm super guilty of #2. I'm also obsessed with how sexy the P790s or nice blades look. However I don't think my Sim2s look bad at all.

  20. I bought Sim 2 set with reg graphite shafts, 1 inch longer clubs. Fitter wanted me to get 1/2 inch. I like to choke up a little. I also paid a little extra to get the grips I love. Winn dri tac 2.0. Thanks for your channel.

  21. Your bonus tip is spot on, not all fitters are created equal, I was fit into the wrong shafts, I tried for 6 months to make the clubs work but it just did not, after spending over $1000 to correct the issue now have the correct equipment, still sucks all the wasted money

  22. Good Vid .. but most people (myself included ) just like to have new stuff … I have made mistakes (Ben hogan as well as happens) ordered online in uk for new edge ex … loved the vintage look but just didn’t love them when I played … swapped for Wilson d9 .. which I love .. but I’m sure I’ll be tempted to buy the new ones … we’re all the same ! Just love new toys
