The new PING i540 irons replace the PING i530 irons as one of the best players-distance irons on the market in 2026. PING i540 irons are designed with a new inR-Air technology, which is designed like an airbag behind the clubface to attenuates frequencies for improved sound and feel without restricting bending. But how do the PING i540 irons compare to the predecessor, PING i530?

the 530 looks way, way better
I just had the opportunity to borrow demo i540s for a week to hit in my golf cave. My 2 cents: they were the worst feeling irons I can remember hitting. I had been fit for i530s and I really wanted to make the i540s work so I hit hundreds of shots (and have the LM data). I was hitting Chrome Soft and TP5 balls. I pretty well had the Ping fitting cart so I tried a bunch of shafts (steel and graphite), Retro and Power Spec, and different lie angles. But they were so hard on the hands and they sounded bad (I was hitting indoors in a quiet space so this was accentuated). I was mixing it up with my gamers (Cobra Forged Tec), RTZ wedges, a T200, a Ping i245 and at the end of it I couldn't recall hitting a shot that felt good with the i540.Yes the distance numbers were great (spin, launch and landing were nothing to brag about) but I couldn't play them.
