CHARLESTON, S.C. — In the spring’s first tournament, the High Point University women’s golf team finished third at The Citadel’s Oyster Shuck Match Play event, which began on Monday and concluded on Tuesday and was hosted on the Charleston Municipal Golf Course.
The Panthers swept host school The Citadel and Big South Conference opponent Gardner-Webb, 5-0, in two matches while falling to eventual winner Samford, 3.5-1.5.
Freshman Eva Lye led the team with three wins, while fellow rookie Makayla Grubb was unbeaten with two wins and a tie. Senior Ella Perna and junior Anna Howerton each won two matches alike sophomores Anais Arafi and Ambre Matlega, who was completing as an individual.
Head Coach Lyndsey Hunnell: “”It wasn’t the outcome we hoped for, but I was proud of how this group continued to grow throughout the week. After spending the past two and a half weeks practicing indoors due to weather, it took us a couple rounds to find our rhythm once we got back outside. The team settled in, played strong down the stretch, and gained valuable match play experience that will serve us well heading into conference.”
