First Tee B.C. to open second youth golf program in Surrey

A new youth golf program is coming to Cloverdale.

First Tee B.C. will soon open their second location in the city at The Backyard Golf, located at the Clayton Hills Golf Course.

Scott Stefani, program manager for First Tee B.C., said the golf program offers development through Golf Canada. It gives kids “life-enhancing experiences through golf,” he said via email. First Tee provides training at golf courses, schools, and community centres with a goal of reflecting societal diversity.

“Our program will offer weekly, no cost and low cost, golf programs for kids aged 7-13,” Stefani wrote. “In addition, we will also be offering no cost golf equipment to schools and community centres around Surrey so that they can introduce golf to their participants in low barrier environments.”

Stefani said the revitalization of the Clayton Hills Golf Course is one of the reasons First Tee is able to open a second program location in Surrey.

“Thanks to Backyard Golf, the course has gone through extensive upgrades as well as a new short game area that is great for kids and families to begin their golf journey,” he added.

Stefani will host a grand opening celebration on Feb. 26 to introduce First Tee to the Cloverdale community. The event will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

“One of our goals for the event is to create a group of donors that will allow us to offer the First Tee program at no cost to participants,” Stefani explained. “We currently have a no cost program at Surrey Golf Course funded by RBC Community Junior Golf and would love to create a second no cost option in Surrey.”

First Tee has brought the game of golf to more than 7,000 kids in B.C. since 2022.
