So it appears Scottie Scheffler may be human after all.

The dominant world No.1 had a rare shocker in the opening round of the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale on Friday (AEST), carding a two over 73 to end his remarkable streak of 33 rounds without shooting over par.

This wasn’t the Scottie Scheffler who has proved near-untouchable at times, and who came into this week’s event at Tiger Woods-like odds of favouritism.

An error-riddled round including a fluffed chip on the 18th hole that rolled back almost to Scheffler’s feet — prompting a furious frustrated reaction rarely seen from the world No.1.

“We didn’t see this coming,” one commentator remarked, with the ensuing bogey followed up by a double and another bogey in Scheffler’s next two holes.

It was Scheffler’s first over par in a round since the third round of the Travelers Championship in June last year.

He finished the round 10 strokes behind in-form countryman Chris Gotterup, who surged to the early lead with a flawless eight-under 63 to be two ahead of Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick (65).

Australian Karl Villips shot a 73 while Min Woo Lee and Cam Davis were among the late starters at the iconic Phoenix event, one of the best-attended events in world sport and renowned for it’s party atmosphere.
